"Wait!" the raspy voice called out to me. A claw tore the top of my ankle; I winced at the sharp sting but kept moving forward. I opened the heavy door to the outside air and fled towards the tree line not far off. This area was usually safe, full of guards, but many were missing. I didn't question it; this was my only chance.

The storm from the previous night brought good omens. Fresh rain washed the paths, granting new scents for a new hunt. Despite the darkness enveloping the cave where I and Razak lived, I knew exactly when the light sources would strike the sky. My father was hooked up to life support machines, tubes coming out of his arms, chest, and mouth. He no longer looked like himself. There was no light in his eyes, no golden glow to his skin. He had been here too long, and his beard was tangled with the wires.

The sound of clattering tools woke me suddenly. "Dad?" I whispered. I rubbed my cheek against the pillow as I realized Dad wasn't here; he was gone. In fact, I wasn't home at all and was stuck in a tree escaping the duke. The thing my cheek was rubbing against was soft and warm. Like animal fur.
