Chapter 1: Harley

In my defense, I was very drunk, very heartbroken, and very much not expecting to drag home a half-dead vampire like some goth raccoon who’s hoarding bad decisions. I should have kept walking. I should have ignored the man slumped against the alley wall, blood darkening his shirt. I should have known that a creature with eyes like his wasn’t meant to be saved.

Chapter 2: Harley

Steven and I’s sex life has always been mediocre. He never wanted to use toys in the bedroom. The only positions he knew were missionary and me giving him a blowjob. Is that even a position? I digress. He went down on me once. Afterward, he told me he didn’t know what the big deal was about giving oral sex to a woman because it didn’t give him any pleasure. Well, duh, dickwad, that’s the whole point.

I creep closer to the person who is obviously in a significant amount of pain. A lone dim bulb flickering over a door about five feet from the guy gives me just enough light to start making out some of his features. Because it’s most definitely a him. Even slumped over, clutching his side, I can tell he is tall and muscular. His head is dropped forward, but he has inky black hair long enough to cover his eyes from this angle, so I can’t see his face.

Chapter 4: Harley

Taking a deep breath in through my mouth and releasing it via my nose, I prepare myself for what lies beneath his shirt as I lift it all the way so it settles beneath his armpits. There is a puncture wound on the left side of his abdomen about 3 inches in length. It looks irritated and sensitive, and there is a faint black discoloration on the ridges of the cut. That doesn’t look normal.

Chapter 5: Thane

Even before I open my eyes, something feels different - about me and the space I find myself in – for various reasons. I’m lying on a couch, something I never do. That’s what my custom-made Alaskan King bed with its black silk sheets is made for. There is an intoxicating smell permeating the air. And not the unique scent of blood, which I can detect a mile away. It calls to me, simultaneously calming my soul (if I had one) and setting fire to my nervous system.
