Chapter 1

Like all werewolf kids, the legend of the Moon God was one of my favorite bedtime stories. My mom would tuck me under the covers and tell me how thousands of years ago, the Moon God created the first werewolves. How, not long after, he made sure each werewolf was born with a soul mate. I’d listen with wide eyes as she told me how the Moon God wasn’t just a deity for wolves to worship, but centuries ago, he even ruled over us like a king. Of course, that was before he was cursed into an eternal sleep, and werewolves were left to fend for themselves.

Chapter 3

“Have you guys ever heard the legend of the Moon God?” I asked them. Several of the kids shook their heads. “What’s that?” one asked. “Well, my mom used to tell it to me all the time when I was your age,” I said, “And it’s one of the most important parts of werewolf lore.” I swallowed down the lump in my throat as I thought about the way my mother used to tuck me in each night, her soothing voice lulling me to sleep.

Chapter 4

Pack dinners were probably my favorite part of being a werewolf. They only happened once a month, but the wait was well worth it. Our pack would band together to have one large meal, and as we’d eat, our Alpha would discuss pack business. Since that Alpha was currently fending off a bunch of rogues for our neighboring pack, Hudson took his place.

Chapter 6

The next hour passed in nothing but numbness. Healer Carol had eventually managed to pry Alpha Roman’s body away from Luna Baila and transport him to the room where he’d be prepared for burial. Luna Baila, still crying and distraught, had gone to visit the pack elders. I had looked for Hudson in all the chaos, but he’d disappeared. Part of me wanted to hunt him down so I could ask him what happened now, if Alpha Roman’s death meant war, but I realized it would do no good.
