    I really sorry but this story is wrong I mean seriously they give the girl no other option? There are laws against this kind of thing in the United States and this is set in New York. It's obviously not written originally in English and translated from a language where they don't use so many grammar rules, rather quickly I might add using Google translate or something. At least I hope for the sake of English grammar. It's just not American culture as well. If it was written from the perspective of someone from a different country maybe I get it....
