Prologue

"ZEMAR, GO!” screamed her mother, looking at her with a desperation she had never seen before

Her eyes darted between the corpse of her father on the ground and the burly man-like creature now holding a dagger made of solad to her mothers neck. His eyes were fixed on her, dancing in amusement. He enjoyed doing this; he enjoyed seeing the fear in the young woman’s eyes at the thought that she would be next.

With a quick movement, he dug the dagger into the neck of his victim and pulled, reveling in the sick sound the tool made as it sliced her throat open. She fell to the ground with a thud, blue blood spraying everywhere. He smiled at her daughter, looking on with horrified eyes. She would be next and he would finish his mission.

The brand on his chest burnt with an intensity that nearly made him buckle over; he desperately needed to complete the orders of his master or he would die. Nothing scared him more than the prospect of dying an incomplete soldier. The rest of them who had come on this mission lay dead all around the castle but he had survived and he would complete this mission by all means.

He bared his long sharp teeth at the only obstacle in his way and was glad to see her eyes widen another half inch in fear.

He charged.

She flinched.

He swung.

She dodged, albeit too late. The dagger dug itself deep in her arm and she howled in pain. Her golden eyes looked at him with a ferocity that would have an ordinary man cowering. But he was no ordinary man, far from it in fact. He lunged again, surely he would catch her this time. The solad ought to have weakened her and as such, her reflexes would have dwindled.

His arms circled around thin air. He looked around, thinking she had managed to dodge him again but he realized that he had failed his mission; Zemar had disappeared.
