10. Friends

In the beginning, I had few doubts about accepting Damon's past for the article. But desperate times calls for desperate measures. I wanted to come clean with him and tell him everything but Daniel was sure that would get me in trouble. That's the last thing I wanted so I decided to sneakily conduct the investigation I needed for the article. Maybe I can reveal it later while I interview him or he can read it in the paper. The latter option was much more dangerous than I was thinking.

"Are you still thinking about the article?" Kayleen asked, nudging me with her elbow. I looked around and noticed that we were the only ones sitting in the cafeteria. Everyone very busy crowding outside the school for the basketball match. Kay was already glammed up in her cheerleading dress, sitting with me for her quick coffee refill.

"Can you blame me? It's scary" I chewed on my lips, placing the doughnut back in my tray. It was one of those occasions where I need something sweet to comfort me. Unfortunately eating doughnut from the school canteen was a bad idea.

I licked my lips, "It's something I have never done before. What if Damon finds out somehow? Can you imagine how that's gonna end?"

Kay made a face at that, dabbing the tissue furiously against her fingers. Her fingers were covered with sugar from the sachet. She lifted her head and narrowed her eyes at me.

"You cannot back out now. Damon is going to kill us both but if we are doing it we need to do it"

I stared at her for a few seconds, my face blank. Kay was staring back at me with the same gleam in her eyes.

Averting my eyes I huffed and crossed my arms against my chest "That doesn't even make sense. What are you trying to say?"

Kay took a deep breath, her eyes closing for a few seconds as if she was trying to think about something. Reopening them she pulled my arm towards her, "I meant that you should stop avoiding him and raising suspicion. If we are going to do it we need to be careful and you are being opposite of that"

My face fell and I pulled my arm back at that. I knew exactly what she was trying to imply but I played it cool. There was no way that I was confronting him after what happened at the party. He managed to scare me more than ever.

"Do you always make no sense in the morning or?"

She rolled her eyes, "Do not change the topic, Anya. I have seen you trying to avoid him and it's painful to watch. Seriously you just made a sound in front of him and said your puppy was calling you"

I winced at that. That was the peak embarrassment I had ever faced. Actually thinking of now there are many instances I did embarrass myself, the time in the mud definitely was on top. The stunt I pulled a day before came second close.

Damon just wanted to talk about our English assignment but I could not stand there and listen to him so I made that embarrassing exit.

"So?" I weakly questioned

"You don't even have a puppy!"

"I could get one"

"That's not the point. The point is you have decided to write an article on him so running away from the very person is not going to help you in any way."

I sighed. Kay was right. It's not like he carried a knife in his bag, right? Why was I so cautious? I should try to be as brave as I can throughout the entire process. Besides Damon is not going to harm me. If that was his intention then he would have done that on the first day itself.

"You're right... I should try to get close to him and take up as much as I can"

She shook her head, "That's not what I meant-"

"No, I get it, Kay. It's easy to become his friend and get as much as information I can so that it would be easy for us, right?"

"Anya" She interrupted again but I was already standing on my feet. Picking my bottle I slung the bag over my shoulders and grinned. I had to find Damon as soon as possible and be his friend. That would be my first step into the investigation. Why didn't I think about it before? He did seem like the kind of guy would not open up to anyone but his friends.

"You're awesome thanks again for your help Kay"

"Listen to me-"

Shaking my head I waved my hand, "Sorry I'll catch up later!"

"Anya!" She groaned

"Bye"

Who knew that finding Damon in a school of hundreds of students would be difficult? I thought that he must be watching the game just like everyone else but he was not outside. As he was still a stranger to me I had no idea where he could be. Maybe I should have let Kay help me to track him down but she had that game to get back to.

Walking down the hallway I heard the noise from one of the class. Lifting my head up I noticed the room label and it was our class. The door creaked as I pushed it open. It seemed empty from where I was standing but I decided to walk inside.

"Damon?" I called out softly, pushing the other door. My ears rang at the sound it made before finally resting against the wall.

As soon as I stepped inside the room my arm was pulled. I screeched at the sudden movement and before I could take a look at the person my back was pressed against the wall. Shivers ran down my spine and my eyes automatically fluttered opened only to see Damon standing in front of me. He had a frown on his face.

"What the fuck?" I huffed, slapping at his chest. How can he do that? Again? For a second I believe that I was going to be kidnapped or worse was get murdered. The last part made my lips twitch. How ironic it would have sounded though.

He clicked his tongue and moved a few inches away, "Oh are we back to talking again?"

My face flamed at that because I knew exactly what he was talking about. I was aware of the cold wall pressing against my back as his stare was fixed on me. Swallowing the lump formed in my throat I nervously looked away from his face. There was no real explanation I could give him that would make him feel better. It was my chance to make everything right and become his friend.

Taking a deep breath I met his eyes, "I don't know what you are trying to say"

"Acting innocent now, are we?"

I sighed, "Damon I'm sorry... I don't know what I was thinking"

He chuckled bitterly, the hollow sound of his laughter echoing around the room. My hands at my side gripped the jeans I was wearing, suddenly aware of how clammy my hands felt.

"Oh bet I do"

As I tried to explain he shook his head, "I mean I was not expecting you to hand me a medal for sharing my story but the way you behaved..."

I felt frozen. What was he expecting after that gruesome storey he told? Biting my tongue I let him continue.

"I thought we could become friends and that's the reason I told you... But it seems like I was wrong"

His words twisted something inside me. At that moment we were alone and I wanted to confess. It was just that easy but I was scared of his reaction.

I raised my head and met his eyes. For a second I was mesmerized. He must be the most handsome guy I had ever seen. With his luscious fringe falling over his shoulder and thick eyelashes he was a distraction. Snapping out of the daze I shook my head, "No...no no you were not wrong. About the friend part, I mean. I do want us to be friends."

He narrowed his eyes suspiciously staring at me. It would be kind of strange for anyone to be his friend after what he said. My breath hitched in my throat as he inched closer to me. His strong scent was the only thing I could inhale and it felt strong and addictive. My eyes rolled back and shut close as his tip of toes touched mine. I could feel his breathing on my face.

It felt unreal. As he cleared his throat I slowly opened my eyes and met his piercing gaze.

"Are you sure about that?"

I flicked my eyes towards his lips as those words rolled out.

"Huh?"

"About us being friends? Are you sure about it?"

I nodded my head, gulping at the sudden tension in the air. It felt impossible to even breathe without his scent crowding me.

"Yeah...yeah" I hummed not knowing what I was getting myself into.
