11. Kay and Sam

At that moment I genuinely thought that he was going to kiss me. The air between us felt so charged that I instinctively close my eyes. His breath was heavy and raging.

My breath lodged in my throat as I felt his thumb on the corner of my lips. His hands were cold against my warm skin. My toes curled in anticipation as he moved closer.

"Pup" He softly whispered, the sound sending shivers down my spine.

I wanted to yell at him for calling me that annoying nickname. no words left my mouth and I felt paralyzed and in sort of a daze. He brushed the corner of my lips which caused a soft sigh to escape my lips. At that moment nothing matter but the thought of his lips pressing against mine was running in my mind.

"I think we need to leave" He grinned and moved back suddenly. Just like that.

It felt wrong in the beginning like I was tricking Damon. Kayleen, however, had the opposite opinion and she convinces me to keep up my charade. There was nothing like could do after I agreed to be his friend. I mean how difficult can it be?

Turns out very. It had been a week since that incident in the classroom. After I promised him that I was going to be his friend it seemed like he was going to kiss me but that didn't turn out well. Despite the awkwardness, he asked me to join him to watch the basketball game.

After one week of nothing but trying to get into his head proved to be more difficult than I thought. He was not much of a talker and I should have known from the way he always tried to avoid extending the conversations.

Even though I could try harder but I was actually giving him some space to settle down. After all, he just moved back and he has to keep catch up on most of the things. And for your kind information, I am not stalling. Thank you very much, Kay.

Asher was at his game, out of town so I did not have any chance to talk about the date we rescheduled. More likely I did. Anyways he was finally back and I had the chance to talk to him. Kay was still unaware about him asking me out. Deep down I was nervous about her reaction because she always thought worst of the people. Atleast worst of Asher.

"Hey" Sam waved at me. It took me a while to register that he was actually staring at me. 'The class clown' 'Ashers best friend' was waving at me? I blinked several times before lamely nodding at him.

Clenching my eyes shut I focused back on my book. Trust me to embarrass myself without even doing anything. I could feel his footsteps approaching me and I pretended to stare harder at the book. They did not even make sense at the way I was glaring at certain words.

"Anya, right?" Sam's chair scraped against the floor as he sat in front of me. My ears rang at the sound but I ignored it.

Pursing my lips together I hummed. His smile got wider as if he couldn't believe that he pronounced my name correctly. My eyes suddenly went towards his Louis Tomlinson hoodie and even though I wanted to freak out I simply collected myself.

Clearing my throat I narrowed my eyes, "What do you want Sam?"

He clicked his tongue, "I am throwing a party tonight so you in?"

My eyes widened at his question. It did not feel real. Sam threw sick parties. Not only was he famous class clown whom everyone loved his parties were to die for. That's what I heard from the people who were actually invited. Kay this sort of child is the rivalry with Sam that's why she never attends his parties. Even though most of the cheerleading squad is invited Sam makes its personal mission to not invite her.

"Are you seriously asking me?"

"Duh"

I licked my lips, "Umm...sure I think"

He sighed, "Come on it'll be fun"

Just then from the corner of my eyes, I noticed Kay ordering her coffee. I knew that it was going to be a terrible idea to suggest to her that we were going to Sam's party but I wanted to experience what the fuss was all about.

"And Kay? Can I bring her along?"

His eyes brightened up at the mention of her name which was odd since he claimed to hate her. Before I could ask him about it he quickly put on a poker face. He pulled the sleeves of his hoodie, instead of answering.

"I mean- she's..."

"She's my friend" I interrupted him.

"Fine. Be there by seven and I'll text you the address"

My lips curled as I excitedly nodded my head. I forwarded my phone to him so that he could save his number. I flickered my eyes towards Kay only to notice that she was approaching us with a steaming cup of coffee in her hand.

"Sam!" I squeaked a little louder than usual which made him jolt a bit in his seat.

"Fuck! what was that?" He breathed with a chuckle as he handed me the phone back. There was nothing to see of course but I wanted him to get away from the table as soon as he can.

"Nothing, nothing..." I chewed on my lips, "just wanted to say I'm excited"

He released a sigh, "Asher was right. You really are something else"

At the mention of Asher, my cheeks felt hot. He had messaged twice to check up on me.

"Thanks, I guess"

Sam stood up, knocking his knee into the table making me wince, "Shit! That hurt"

Kay mockingly chuckled as she slammed her coffee cup on the table, "About the time I think"

My eyes clenched shut at that. Of course, she chose the perfect time to return back. I tried not to groan as they glared at each other.

"Guess even this table can sense evil approaching and be trying to warn me" Sam scoffed as he pushed his hands into the pockets of his hoodie.

Kay rolled her eyes, "Calling me evil? How original"

"Someone had to say it"

Kay turned to me, "Can you hear something? All I do is this dumb static"

I stood up and stepped out of the chair, aware of the eyes following my action. Most of them loved to gossip and were obviously listening to Sam and Kay. I had no interest in being a part of their drama. My lunch was still untouched and probably cold but I wanted to get away from both of them.

"Uh...I'm going to the library"

Kay made a sound, "Oh come on! A little help here?"

"I'm not getting involved. Meet me after you are done with this... whatever" I pointed in between both of them. Sam saluted me to which I shook my head and sauntered out of the cafeteria.

I did go to the library after that brewing drama in the cafeteria. There was known real information on the internet about the killing of Arcuris. It appeared as if someone was trying to cover it up and I needed to get a reliable source to write the article. Besides trusting the internet with local murders is never a good idea.

As soon as I stand inside the library I noticed that it was deserted except for the librarian and the two administrative staff organising the bookshelf. Taking a deep breath I stepped inside. The three of them turned towards me like I was some kind of celestial creature. Or an alien.

"Hi" I awkwardly waved

The librarian, Mrs Pierce was the oldest woman in the school. Last year she yelled at me for smudging the corner of the book and collected fine. It wasn't even my fault. I tried telling her that but she didn't listen. Ever since then I rarely visited our school library.

"What can I help you with, Miss?" Mrs Pierce narrowed her eyes as she adjusted her glasses.

I cleared my throat staring at her neatly arranged desk. Color coded Of course."Umm... I need old newspapers kind of"

"You have to be more specific I am afraid"

The two of them giggled behind me but I tried not to pay attention. Taking a deep breath I met Mrs Pierce's eyes.

"I need old newspapers... probably from five years for my research"

Mrs Pierce narrowed her eyes, "Research?"

"Yeah...I cannot tell anything more about it"

"Fine. What newspapers are you looking for exactly?"

"Our towns newspapers? Any news wrote about uhh...crimes I guess"

Mrs Pierce was quiet at that. The giggling from behind was silent as well. For a second I was scared that I must have said something that might have offended her. And that she was going to ask me to leave.

"Are you here for Arcuri murder articles too?" Mrs Pierce questioned
