Seven

Chapter Seven.

Jennifer, in her white knee length laced gown and leather feathery slippers, walked into the expensively furnished living room, lazily.

She acknowledged the lawyer who was sitting on an armchair just to her right of entrance, by smiling a bit at him

He stood up to shake her hand.

Hee eyes went to his face even though she tried not to.

His face looked dirtier this morning, true.

Especially his nose, it was big and flat and it had more of a dirty brown feature than his face. His eyes which had grey coloured irises, screamed loud in contrast to his skin . Jennifer wondered as she has always wondered. how on earth he looked like that. He looked like he just had a bath in a pig's sty. Funny enough, he smelled nice, chocolatey to be precise.

Probably uses foundation, she thought as she shook his hand which was white.

"Nice to see you up, Jennifer." He said his fat lips morphing into a smile.

She pressed her lips together and motioned him to sit.

He grinded his thigh together before sitting, a terrible habit of his, which caused Jennifer nausea any time he visited. Most times, when standing, he did it continuously to everyone's disgust.

Jennifer threw back the urge to puke and sat next to Francis who was on the white leather 'lover's seat' just opposite the lawyer. He squeezed her hand and smiled at her and her core suddenly reminded her of their unfinished business. Sighing, she smiled at the lawyer.

"Mr Kirchoff, what do you have for us?"

Mr Kirchoff moved forward in his seat,a file in his hand.

"Jenny, the will. May I read it?"

She nodded.

He opened the file and brought out a paper, he cleared his throat before talking.

"This will is dated 12th August 2017. This will was made by Mr Joseph Lewis, who stated that at the point of death, this should be addressed. First, he has a message for you Jenny..."

He took his eye from the paper and looked at her.

Jennifer folded her lips, trying to avoid the emotions flow out and nodded to him reading it out to their hearing.

The lawyer continued.

"Jennifer, I am sorry I left you so soon. I don't even know what I am saying, you might be sixty or seventy years when you hear this..."

Jennifer huffed.

"...anyways, I know you will be hurt, but please do not let it affect you, your life, Francis life and probably your children's life. I am gone, fine.We will meet someday, I am certain, even with your mom there. I love you my muffin."

The lawyer finished and took another paper.

Jennifer wiped the tears which had rolled down unconsciously .

Francis hugged her closer and ran his hand to and fro her arm.

"You can continue Mr Kirchoff." Francis said.

"There is nothing much here,it says Jennifer gets to be the CEO, she has to take over all his properties , houses and cars included. You will have access to all the company's accounts.

And as for Francis, he gets ten heactres of land situated here in Bahama. In addition to the branch he heads in Shama, he gets to head five more branches. He also gets an amount of $45.5 m, for his help and assistance through the years.

The documents are in here to back it."

Mr Kirchoff looked at them before getting back to the paper.

"Hmm, the rest here is pertaining to the domestic staff, you want to hear that?"

Francis looked at Jennifer, asking if she wanted to hear it.

She shook her head, left to right.

"Okay, so do you have anything to say about the will?" He asked as he packed the paper into the file and into his briefcase.

"I don't want to be the CEO." Jennifer blurted out.

"What?" Francis and Mr Kirchoff spat, looking at her in surprise.

"I don't want to be the CEO. I can't do it. Give it to someone else."

"Who?" Mr Kirchoff asked.

"Dunno." She shrugged.

"Maybe Francis"

Francis stood up.

"Nah,nah. I can't possibly."

"Yeah, he can't Jenny. You are the one entitled to it.Giving it to someone is against the papers."  Mr Kirchoff said, looking confusedly between Francis and Jennifer as though his mind was thinking it was all a drama.

Jennifer shook her head and stood up.

"Mr Kirchoff, may I see you in private?"

"Yeah." He stood up and followed her to the dining section next to the living room.

She rubbed her forehead before facing Mr Kirchoff who was standing four feet, eight inches, with his hand behind him.

"Mr Kirchoff, I am being serious, I won't be able to do the CEO thing, I am not ready for it at all. So,I want Francis in there. Besides, we are to get married next year and it would be insulting if  my husband is working under me ,right? I can head the branches instead. So tell me,what can we do ?"

"Jenny... Francis has always been your man since all these years and it was never insulting that he worked at a position below you. I would propose you think this well Jennifer, your dad won't like this idea. " Mr Kirchoff had a disapproving expression drawn on his face.

" Don't even try. Don't bring my father into this. This is my life okay and I am saying I can't do the CEO thing, please." Jennifer said, getting annoyed in an unnecessary and inappropriate way.

"Well, marrying him is the solution."

She smiled as his proffered solution matched the thoughts she had been having for sometime. "Well, marrying him it is. We were to marry next year anyway, it doesn't hurt to shift it. Next week doesn't hurt, right?"

"But..." He wanted to protest again, but she cut him short.

"The office can't be left that way for weeks, that would hurt a lot of activties . So next week Monday."

Mr Kirchoff gave a short nod, agreeing against his will and against her father's will.

"Let's go tell Francis, he would love it." Jennifer jumped happily towards the living room, Mr Kirchoff walked quietly behind her, so many thoughts running through his mind.

Francis who was pressing his phone looked up when they entered.

"Well?" He said with an eyebrow up.

"We are getting married next week!" She said excitedly and hugged him.

He hugged her back and looked at the lawyer behind her with a questioning look. Mr Kirchoff shrugged.

"So soon?"

She released herself and hit him playfully on his chest.

"Yap. It will be low -key. You know, probably in a registry. Aren't you happy?"

She squealed.

"Yes, yes I am." He hugged her, a smile playing on his lips as she hugged him back, dissolving herself into his hold.
