Chapter 1

Scarlett

"Corre Scarlett!"

"Madre por que?"

"Ve ahora bebe!"

The last memory of my mother is playing in my head. This was before she was gunned down by my father's enemies. Her voice still haunts me but gives me the strength I need to always push through. That was thirteen years ago and I still have nightmares of finding her lifeless body.

I watched as my mother's blood seeped into the carpet of her bedroom and I vowed that the ones who killed her would pay for what they did. I was found hours after her death, my tio found me cuddled next to her fast asleep.

"They will pay, tio," I said to myself.

Memories that haunt me and give me strength. This one of all is my most powerful, because it helps me remember why I do what I do. My heart and my mind racing as I race around the track leaving my teammates behind.

"Keep up!" I say as I run, passing up Antonio and Griffin. "Ah, you guys lose again! It must suck to be you."

I laugh as I throw my arms up like Rocky Balboa. The guys blow me off as we all hydrate and start to talk shop.

"Santiago will be contacting one of you regarding the Luciano mission," Antonio says before pouring water over himself.

"That's huge," Griffin says still out of breath.

I'd been waiting for those words for years, so this is music to my ears. The Jimenez and the Luciano's have been rivals since the beginning and I was finally going to get my in. The Luciano's are the ones who murdered my mother in cold blood and after 13 years, I was going to get my revenge.

"I want in. I haven't been under since we lost Lamont."

We were all filled with sadness, but that's the price of this job. We have no way of knowing if we would ever come back alive and each mission that we've lost someone is a reminder to us all that we were lucky to be here.

"I'm going to talk to Santiago," Griffin says in a matter of fact tone, "When I get the mission, I will bring you on, sweetheart."

Griffin begins jogging to his car and I scoff. I don't need him to bring me on because I'm the one Santiago is going to contact; he promised me the next mission.

"I'm going to head out, too. I have a few things to do."

"How about we grab lunch?" Antonio says with a beautiful smile.

He's the type of guy your parents want you to marry. Handsome, strong and sweet as pie. But I don't want sweet. Antonio is still a puzzle I've yet to figure out completely. As sweet as he is, he can be cold; I've seen him in action.

"Rain check?" I say before putting my earbuds in to jog the two miles to my car.

I love this city, especially in early May when everything starts growing and you can smell spring with each breath. While jogging, I catch sight of a shirtless man in black running shorts and shades. His upper body was a canvas full of tattoos, including his hands. I watch as his muscles flex as he hits the pavement, owning it.

It's my job to notice things rather quickly and in five seconds flat, I could see he wasn't married and had an all about business face. We glanced at each other as we passed and a wave of heat went straight to my coño.

Yes, my pussy was throbbing with just a glance from him. Whenever she did that, I knew to stay away. I've learned the hard way that thinking with your pussy and your heart only gets you pain. And not the pain I prefer when fucking.

I made it to my pearl white Lexus RX and just as the engine purred, a call came through my speakers.

"Santiago."

"Qué pasa?" I say in my native tongue.

"There's a big fish in the game who's taking people out left and right."

"What's the mission?"

"He owns a strip club and plenty of warehouses. He's into weapons, drugs, and women." He emphasized the last word.

"Human trafficking?"

"Not quite. He's rather picky, so this will not be an easy task."

"Get close and get to know his operations?"

"The guy runs a dangerous operation, cutthroat as hell. He's got some kills under his belt. Right now, he and the Russo's are out for blood. This is hardcore; Mafia ties all up and through this, Scar."

Was he trying to scare me or tempt me? I thought to myself before speaking.

"I can handle him, Santi. Where's the file?"

"Sending it to your phone now. Call me when you've decided."

"I'm in! Nothing to think about."

"If I sense any danger, I'm pulling you out."

"I'm not sure what you're expecting, but we can handle him. Antonio is on this mission already, I will be fine. Will we bring Griffin on, too?" I ask out of complete curiosity.

"There's an address in the file. You need to be there tomorrow at 4 PM for auditions. Yeah, Griffin will be on, too."

"Great. Twenty-four hours to get our shit together."

"You've done it in less."

He was right, we had and I've been waiting 13 years to strike this family.
