Chapter 13

April

I sighed deeply as I lay in bed.

I was staring at the ceiling for what seemed like an hour now, unable to sleep.

Rose wouldn't talk to me ever since I left Lucian but I had no choice.

He can't get involved in all this. If he got hurt because of me then I would never forgive myself.

"Rose." I called for her through the mind link, yearning some company.

No reply.

"Rose." I called again with a groan. "You're acting like a kid."

"Me? A kid? You're the stupid one!" She snapped at me. "How can you just leave your mate and go? He was going to stand by our side and help!" She growled at me.

"He was going to get hurt!" I snapped back. She just wouldn't get it.

Rose growled again before blocking our connection again.

I groaned in frustration. "Fine!"

I got out from bed and decided to fill my mind with the mission at hand.

The quicker this is finished, the faster I can go back to Lucian and live like a normal person.

My goal is to find Beta Doyle or anything that would connect to him.

I pulled the bank document that Alpha Rosewood gave me from under my mattress.

Hugh told me that the money was transferred from an anonymous account to one in North Carolina so my only assumption was that beta Doyle has fled to North Carolina.

I groaned again and flopped on my bed.

How am I supposed to go there and most importantly, when? Uncle Adam won't just overlook my absence.

I decided to wait until morning to see what Hugh might offer for help. We can think of ways to probably drive Doyle to come back here.

"You should think of ways to go back to Lucian instead." Rose mumbled.

I rolled my eyes at her before closing them.

"I will Rose, soon." I answered.

She didn't answer and I was soon falling asleep.

--

As the sun started rising and morning rolled by, I was finishing up my normal chores before the pack woke up. And when everyone went by their own business, it was time for me to talk to Hugh and perhaps find a way to meet with Doyle.

"From what I've found, it turns out that Doyle has a mate." Hugh spoke as I munched on my chips next to him. They were actually his but that's not our problem right now.

I listened intently as he continued.

"She's still living in the Rosewood pack but as an omega now."

"Do they have any children?" I asked as I plopped another chip in my mouth.

"Uh...yes. A boy who...." Hugh trailed off as he searched on his computer.

"Who's living with his mate in North Carolina?" Hugh said in excitement like he just won the noble prize.

"He fled to his son?" I stated more than asked.

"Looks like it." Hugh mumbled.

"But why didn't he take his mate?" I asked in confusion. It's only normal that a wolf would want to stay with his mate. How can he disappear for seven whole years and not ask about her?

"I don't know. Better yet, how couldn't alpha Rosewood find him if he's with his son?" Hugh continued, adding to my confusion.

I kept quite as I continued munching on my chips.

"Do you think I should go talk to his mate?" I asked more to myself but still wanting Hugh's opinion.

"She might help lure Doyle here but you can't be so sure that she'll help though. She'll want to protect her mate." Hugh said.

"I'll try and convince her somehow." I said as I placed the bag of chips on Hugh's desk and getting up to leave.

I heard Hugh sigh as he removed the bag of chips from his desk and placed it somewhere.

Seriously, that guys cares about his gadget more than he cares about breathing.

I kept on practicing through the day what I'm going to say to Mrs. Doyle and how exactly am I going to convince her to help me.

Darkness took over and I was soon getting into action.

I started making my previously known route to the Rosewood pack.

"She lives in a small cottage on the east side of the territory." Hugh notified through the ear piece.

I nodded my head slightly even though I knew that he couldn't see me.

I got out my infrared binoculars once I reached at a near distance from her house.

I expected her to be asleep, seeing as it was already past midnight, but I was surprised to find her baking something in the kitchen.

I approached more and the scent of freshly baked cookies filled my senses.

"She's baking cookies." I mumbled to myself.

"Get me some on your way." Hugh said and I could see the grin on his face.

I smiled too at what he said.

I was able to look through her kitchen window easily so I put my binoculars back.

She looked about forty in age and her mere presence gave me a sense of home.

I gasped loudly when she turned around.

"What happened April?" Hugh asked worriedly.

"She..She...." I stuttered not knowing what to say.

"What? What's wrong April?" Hugh asked more worried.

"She looks like my mom." I said, my voice barely a whisper.

Hugh thankfully remained silent. He was probably in shock too.

My initial plan of scaring her to help me flew out the window once I saw her face and I wanted to go hug her and cry instead.

She looked so pure and happy, I don't really know why would fates place her with someone like Doyle.

I hopped down from the tree branch and stood directly in front of her house door.

I then did something I never thought I'd do.

I knocked on her door gently, asking for permission to enter.

The clattering of utensils that were heard from the kitchen earlier stopped and I heard her heart drum loudly in her chest.

I then heard her unsure footsteps coming towards the door.

"Yes?" She said from behind the door.

"Uhm...I don't really know how to say this but can you please open the door. I'm no danger I promise." I spoke softly.

She hesitated for a moment before I heard her unlocking the door.

I quickly removed my mask, wanting her to see me, to know that I'm not a threat to her.

I watched as the door opened, revealing my mother's doppelganger.

What I didn't expect though was for her to gasp in shock.

"April?"
