Betrayal

-Avery POV-

Ouch, I burned my hand while I took the bread out of the oven. “Focus, Avery” I’m saying to myself. I have never seen my son so shocked and confused in my entire life. I can feel there's something big going on. This ‘lunch-making-thing’ is just an excuse to calm myself and prepare for something bad. Because I know it is. I can feel it through my wolf, Aura. Since Adam rushed through the kitchen door I could feel her mood change. She is tensed and on guard. Immediately I felt my senses sharpen and an adrenaline rush through my veins. I close my eyes and mindlink my wolf, Aura.

Aura, my girl, I am not sure what is going on. I felt your mood change. I feel you are on guard. Can you tell me why?

Avery, as your wolf I am also the mother of our boy Adam. I can feel his feelings too. You know I am better at detecting feelings, as a wolf, than you as a human. I don’t know what he’s talking about, but I feel it's big. Stay calm. I am always with you, don’t worry.

I take a deep breath. It’s always calming me, contacting with my other half. Not many knows, but I am also very good at it. I am not just a Luna. There is a reason why I can led this pack without an Alpha. And I have the feeling that the day explaining this to my son is coming near. I take the sandwiches I made, and walk to my office.

As expected, Adam is already sitting in the chair near my window. He loved to sit there, watching me work, when he was a little boy. He sat there for ours, staring out the window. He often brought some toys too.

“Where is Joshua, Adam?” I ask my son. Adam looks at me and I see his eyes darkened a bit. I know he is mindlinking Joshua. Although Adam hasn’t connected with his wolf yet, being a Luna’s kid means you can mindlink anyone in the pack from the day you turn twelve. Well, normally. I don’t know why, but I’ve mindlinked with Adam when he was only five years old. I have never heard of someone being able to use that power before the wolf connected with the human! I guess it's because he’s special.

“Mom! I am talking to you!” Adam cut off my thoughts. “Sorry, darling, what where you saying?” Adam rolls his eyes, and I chuckle a bit at his attitude. “He said he’s drying his, you know…” Adam's fingers pointed to his lap. The moment I understand what he is talking about I let out a shocked cry “EEEWWW, Adam! I should have NOT heard that. Cut of the details, tell me how long until he’s here and why does he need to be here anyway?”

I hear a knock at the door. “Come in, Joshua, I know it’s you..Are you dressed well? Adam felt the need to share me some details a minute ago and I want to make sure you are fully dressed.΅ I see his head across the corner, “Aaaahh, did Adam tease you again? He will never learn, I guess.” he says with a smile around his mouth.

Joshua closes the door and walks towards Adam. They high-five each other before Joshua takes the seat next to Adam. I sigh. The boys are close, Joshua is the brother Adam never had. I take place behind my desk and I look at the boys and ask with a firm voice: “So, who's gonna tell me what the hell is going on?”

Adam nods at Joshua. Joshua sighs and looks with a shy gaze at his Luna. “Luna, you know I see you as my second mother. I love you ‘till death and would do anything to protect you. But it is not easy for me to be here, and telling you this. That’s why I need to make sure you will NEVER, ever, tell anybody that the information that I will give you is coming from me. Can you promise that to me, please?”

I look at Joshua’s face and I can tell he is dead serious. I know trust is one of the fundations a pack is build on, and I will never disrespect that. So I smile at Joshua and say: “Dear Joshua, you know I see you as my son as well. The two of you have been together since the day you two met. You are brothers, not linked by blood, but by heart. And you know trust and loyalty means the world to me. So you have my word: I will never link the information you're about to give me, to your name, to anybody. Is that enough?” I see the relief on his face so I know my words have comforted him. I hear his voice starts talking again, and I listen carefully.

“The other night, I couldn’t sleep. You know me, I’m more a morning person and get cranky when I haven't got enough sleep. So when I woke up in the middle of the night, and couldn’t fall asleep anymore, I decided to go for a walk. I went to the forest when I saw my father, leaning against a tree. My first reaction was to walk closer to him, but then I heard the voices. I didn’t recognize them, at first. I stopped walking and hid myself behind one of the other trees. I overheard them talking. The three other guys were from the Blue Oasis Pack and they asked my father if he was interested in being an Alpha." Joshua clears his throat before he continues:

"I was confused. How can my father, a Beta, being an Alpha? My father asked for an explanation too. It turned out they want to plan a coup on you, Luna. My father is trying to take the lead of our pack, with the help of the Blue Oasis, and be the Alpha. In exchange of their help, my father needs to give up the pack and bond with Blue Oasis as a sisterpack. Not only that, they said it needs to happen before you, Adam, turn sixteen. Otherwise you can take over the pack. I don’t know the details, I couldn’t hear everything they said. I was not standing close enough. But at that point, I decided I’ve heard enough and went quickly back to the house. I was afraid of getting caught.

I couldn’t sleep anymore, so this morning I went on an extra long run with my wolf, Jaggar, to clear my head. And I knew I had to talk to you both. So… Yeah, that’s it. I hate my father for planning this. With the Blue Oasis, for Moon Goddess’ sake! Kind of our biggest enemy in this area! I know he hates not being an Alpha his whole life, but didn’t expect him to go this far. I am so sorry Luna.”
