Chapter 2

The darkness I had felt soon turns to warmth and I realize I am not in front of the police station anymore. My eyes flutter open and I see a room, but it is strange to me. It isn't my home, everything that had happened had not been a dream. I sat up in the bed I was in, scanning the room carefully. It was simple but cozy. I turned my body and my feet were met by the cold wood floors as I stood to explore where I was. I heard a typing noise coming from beyond the door, and I slowly walked to find the source. I peeked my head through the door to see my lawyer sitting at a dining table on his laptop.

He was taking a sip of coffee and he hadn't noticed me yet. I took a moment to look him over once more, and I admit that he looked far more handsome than I had noticed yesterday. This made me feel a little weird that I was alone with him. He catches sight of me and gives me a large welcoming smile.

"Hey you, you're finally awake." He says almost sounding happy to see me.

"Yeah, um how long was I asleep?" I ask slowly walking and taking a seat across from him.

"18 hours! I guess you were exhausted by everything." He tells me.

18 hours? I have never slept that long, but I guess he was right. Everything hit me then and there, and as much as I wanted to be strong the realization was too much. My parents are dead, and the person who killed them and wants me dead too. But who? Wait, he told me before I collapsed.

The Alpha. What Alpha?

I cleared my throat and his attention was on me. "You said the Alpha was after me. What Alpha?"

He gives me a look that I could not really understand. It was a look of sympathy, pain, fear I couldn't make it out. I took in his scent for a moment and I could tell, he was one of us. He was a werewolf too.

"The Alpha from your old pack." Is what he says next.

We had left our pack when I was young, around 10 years old. I didn't have many memories of our Alpha, just that everyone was scared of him. I had seen him a handful of times returning to the pack covered in injuries or blood, and that only made him seem like a monster. I never asked my parents why we left, and they never told me. Yet, if the Alpha wanted us there had to be a good reason why.

"Why would our old alpha want us dead?" I ask him.

"I don't know. Most alphas do not like when pack members leave the pack, but they don't usually hunt them down after this many years and kill them. I honestly don't know what he wants with you or your parents." He replies.

"How did you meet my parents?" I ask him.

"They contacted me a few months ago because they wanted to complete a will." He tells me.

"A will? Did they think something like this would happen?" I ask feeling the tears threatening to fall.

"There are many reasons for people to decide to write a will, and they never told me why they wanted to do it at that time. But they were persistent about it being done quickly." He pulls out a folder from his bag that sat on the chair next to him. "This is their will, and you are the beneficiary of everything."

I look at him skeptically. He made it sound like there was a lot to give, but my parents were not very rich. They made enough for us to own our own home and car, but we were not richer than the others who lived in our neighborhood.

"If you look carefully here, you will see the sum total of everything they left for you." He says removing a form and setting it in front of me.

If I had taken a sip of the water he had set in front of me before seeing that paper, I would have choked. There was no way my parents had this kind of money, it had to be a mistake.

"Two million dollars?" I asked still in shock.

"It would seem so, yes." He says with a half-smile. "You have enough here to start a new life Maya."

"But it's impossible! Where did this money come from?" I ask trying to wrap my head around what I had just learned.

"Your parent's did not specify how they came about that money, and as a lawyer it was best not to ask. Plausible deniability and such. I do know that they owned the house you lived in, and another apartment not far from The University of Maine." He pointed out.

A memory flashes through my mind as the university name reached my ears. I had told my parents that I wanted to go to a human college when I graduated, but one that had a cute town. When I came across the university website a few months ago, I fell in love instantly and had even arranged a weekend to make the drive to see it in person. Me and mom took a tour and I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. I had received the acceptance letter a couple of days ago, and my mom and dad treated me to a celebratory dinner that night. The memory made the tears fill my eyes again and I could no longer hold them in, and I let out a small whimper as they fell.

My parents had bought me apartment to live in for college, but now would I even be going? I was not ready to move on and start living life like they had not just been murdered. How could I?

"Your parents made plans for you, do you think they would want you to stay here and mourn them forever? You need to live Maya and try to move on. You won't be forgetting them; you will always remember them! But you have a whole future you could live now, and you shouldn't waste it staying here." Nathaniel tells me.

I know he is right, and I want more than anything to be normal and go to a normal college. But I am not normal, I am a werewolf, and a hunted one.

"How can I go to college if this Alpha is hunting me? Isn't it too dangerous right now?" I ask him.

"I don't know what the Alpha wanted, but I don't think it was you he wanted dead." Nathaniel said thinking for a moment.

"What do you mean?" I ask him confused.

"The man who killed your parents could have killed you, but he didn't. There must be a reason why." He replies. "I am trying to find out as much as I can from my friends in your old pack, but as of now you are not in immediate danger. I think it’s best to go on like normal and try not to draw any suspicion. I will keep digging and see what I can find out, but you need to go." He says seriously.

I nodded. I guess there is no getting out of it but the chill feeling that someone, a powerful creature was hunting for me still lingering in my mind.

The Alpha. What did he want from me?
