Chapter 6

Standing in my closet I can't seem to be able to decide which outfit would be best. Maybe it is best to treat this as a possible date! I pick out my favorite black jeans and my cream button up blouse that had two ties that can be tied into a bow around my neck. I decide to go for a messy bun and dainty flower stud earrings. I have never been big on heels so I opt for my black converse instead! With one more glance in the mirror I am happy with my outfit choice, and I grab my purse that's hanging on a hook by the door and head out to find Tommy.

I found him waiting and fidgeting nervously with his hands at the entrance of campus. There was a moment before he saw me where I could admire him a little. He had on dark jeans with a black button up and black lace up shoes. He looked almost like a model, and I couldn't help but admire him. Once he caught sight of me his eyes grew slightly, and I felt instant regret. Did I dress up too much?

I felt embarrassed that he was looking at me like that, like maybe I made a mistake with my outfit choice. I walked toward him dropping my eyes down to my feet until I was standing in front of him.

"Hi." I said softly.

"Hi! Wow you look great Maya!" He said happily.

I looked up at him a little surprised.

"Are sure I am not too over dressed?" I asked dropping my gaze to my outfit.

"Absolutely not! You look beautiful!" He said easily.

I could not help the blush that came over my cheeks and I instinctively hid my lower face with my hands so he wouldn't see. He laughs and reaches out taking one of my hands.

"Come on, let's go eat!" He says keeping a hold of my hand and leading me away toward the street.

Tommy tightens his hold on my hand as we get closer to the crosswalk, like he is making sure I stay far enough away. I found the action kind of sweet, he seemed to be trying to protect me. I couldn't help but smile to myself, it was the first time in a while that I felt safe.

As I thought this something clicked. Leah said he was a protector, was the person he was meant to protect me? Was that what she was trying to tell me? I had never met Tommy before, so why would this stranger be sent to protect me? Was he a werewolf too?

My senses had grown weaker when Leah had shut me out, which made detecting others of my kind more difficult. I couldn't even tell Nathaniel was one of us until be told me. Even though my sense of smell was better than a human's it still wasn't as in tune as it used to be.

I knew most wolves tried their best to avoid interactions with humans as much as possible, but was there a chance more wolves were around me. Could one of them be sent by the Alpha? Was I in danger here and that was why Tommy is meant to protect me? But he said he had been here two years, was he lying?

The sound of the crosswalk broke me out of my thoughts and Tommy slightly tugged my hand to lead me across the street. I wanted to trust him, but if he was sent here then this was just a job to him. Was he supposed to pretend to like me so I would trust him? I felt a little sick to my stomach now, and a burger was not sounding so appealing. I needed to understand, I needed to ask him what was going on. Before we walked further down the street I stopped and Tommy stumbled slightly by the sudden action.

"Maya? What's wrong?" He asked turning to face me.

"Do we know each other? Like have we met before?" I asked him straight out.

"I don't think so, I would have remembered meeting you! Why?" He seemed sincerely confused by my question.

"Did someone tell you to get close to me?" I asked in a former ton pulling my hand out of his grasp.

He eyes me for a second I assumed to try to figure out my sudden mood change.

"No. Why would someone ask me to get close to you?" He asked, his eyebrows furrowing.

"Look Tommy, I am happy to have met you but if this is some kind of trick I don't want to be a part of it." I replied crossing my arms defensively.

"Maya are you in some kind of trouble? Is that why you are asking me these things?" He walked closer, but I stepped back.

"Please just tell me, is this a trick?" I asked softening my voice slightly.

"Maya I am telling you the truth. I have never seen you before yesterday and no one has asked me to talk to you. But if you are in some kind of trouble, I want to help you." He said sweetly.

I watch him for a couple of moments to see if I can sense he is telling the truth or not. Every part of me says he is being truthful but I still feel like this is unusual.

"I'm sorry. I just wanted to be sure. Because someone is looking for me, a bad man and I thought maybe he sent you." I admitted.

I could see the worry wash over him.

"Someone is after you? Why?" He asked leading me over to a near by bench.

I sit beside him and take a deep breath, maybe I should tell him what's going on.

"It's kind of a long and depressing story." I warned him.

"Just the kind of story I like." He said with an encouraging smile.

I laugh a little. "Are you sure you want to hear this? I mean you don't even know me and this was supposed to be a casual meal."

"Dates are supposed to be when you get to know someone. If this story you are talking about is a part of your life then I want to know." He says taking my hand again and squeezing it softly.

"So this is a date?" I asked shyly.

"Yes it is! I hope the first of many." He said smiling.

I let out a small sigh. "Well, my parents were killed a little over a week ago. They don't know who killed them or why they left me alive, but they think he may come looking for me." I tell him.

The worried look I had seen on his face before returned in a more severe way.

"You were there when your parents were killed?" He asked with a serious tone.

"Yes, I saw the killer but he was covered so I couldn't identify him. For some reason he didn't kill me, but the police think he still wants to. So I came here to lay low and be somewhere he may not know about." I explained.

"Maya I am so sorry! That is horrible! But I promise no one told me to watch you or spy on you! I would never agree to anything like that! I swear!" He said in an almost panicked voice.

"I believe you." I told him with a smile.

"I am worried about you though! They didn't assign you anyone to protect you?" He asked.

His voice seemed angry now, and I can't help but feel guilty for ruining the mood.

"No, but I am fine. I guess just a little paranoid." I said with a small laugh.

"I think I would be slightly paranoid too if someone was after me and had killed my parents." Tommy said with a slightly humorous tone. "Sorry, guess now is not the time to joke."

"It's ok. I can't believe I just spilled all of this to someone I just met!" I admitted embarrassed.

"I am glad you told me Maya! At least now someone can look out for you, isn't that better than dealing with all of this on your own?" He asked almost pleading for me to trust him.

I guess he is kind of nice.

"How about you show me where this burger place is now?" I asked with a smirk.

"Let's go!" He took my hand and pulled me behind him and down the side walk toward a small store front.

Dinner with Tommy went by as I had always imagined a first date would. Even after spilling pretty much the nightmare that was my life right now, he seemed happy. Maybe he was happy that I trusted him with the truth, but he didn't seem like he was ready to run just yet. Part of me loved how normal it felt to be there with him, but the other part of me thought it would be a bad idea to get too attached. What if I had to run again?

I tried to not think about it while I was on our date, but once I was comfy in my bed all those thoughts flooded my mind. He is so nice and deserved to have a normal life, and anything with me wouldn't be anything close to normal. Maybe it would be best to leave him alone. Slowly the thoughts I had began to lull me to sleep. That night I dreamt about the wolf again! The one with the different colored eyes, and he was trying to tell me something. He gazed into my eyes and tried to mind link with me, but my wolf had blocked out all my werewolf abilities. He looked at me curiously trying his best to make me understand but it was all silence to me.

Before I could speak another wolf flies over us both landing behind me with a thud and a deep growl shakes the ground we are standing on. An alpha! This black wolf's eyes were red and full of hate. I screamed and tried to run but I stumble to the floor and turn to see him lung toward me, teeth ready to shred me to pieces. The wolf with the colored eyes attacked the alpha in mid air and tackles him to the ground with his neck caught tight in his mouth. The wolf looks back at me with his one brown eye and one blue eye before he twists the Alpha's neck killing him.

I wake up with a scream again that night searching around my room for the wolf that saved me. Just a dream. It was just a dream.

Even though these were only nightmares, I couldn't help but remember the thing my mother had told me about dreams once.

"Dreams can be fate trying to tell you the right path to take. It can be a glimpse of what your future will bring."
