Chapter 7

I was only a child at the time, but even then I had strange dreams. Dreams about things I didn't understand at the time, but my mom would remind me to not ignore them. At the time I thought she wanted me to believe that all things happen for a reason, but I didn't believe really. I guess I hoped that my future was something I could choose. I didn't want to have my destiny decided for me, I wanted to find my own path without it being chosen for me.

Or maybe I was afraid of what my future held. I wish my mom was here, she always seemed to know what these dreams meant. Sleep was long gone now, and I decided to make some tea and distract myself with one of my favorite classic films. I used to sneak down at night and watch them with dad when I couldn't sleep, and would drift off cuddled up to him. Yet I always woke up in my own bed in the morning. I pressed play and the intro music filled me with memories, I always liked black and white films because it almost felt like another world when I watched these films.

Tonight I felt like watching Laura, not the happiest film but still one of my favorites.

I settled on the couch wrapped in a soft blanket and my cup of tea and watched not just one but two more classic films until I saw the sun rising.

I decided to go for another run and try to wake myself up more. I quickly dressed in another pair of work out clothes and ran...and ran...and ran until I felt like I could barely breath. I used to be able to run longer, but it was harder now with my wolf stripping me of my more useful abilities. I seriously can not believe her right now! Does she not realize what she is doing? Does she not know the more she blocks me the easier it will be for me to get hurt? Why does she insist on shutting me out?! I let out a groan of frustration and turned to head back home.

I made it back without my lungs giving out, thank the goddess but man did I feel exhausted. As I stepped in the door, the land line started ringing.

"hello?" I asked cautiously.

"Maya, it's Nathaniel." I heard through the phone.

"Oh hi! Why are you calling me here and not on my cell?" I ask him.

"Just a precaution. How are things going?" He asks, but he seems distracted.

"Fine. Did something happen? You seem off." I say concerned.

"Everything is fine, don't worry." He laughs nervously.

"It doesn't seem fine." I press.

"I hope I can visit you soon and we can spend some time together. I will be in Washington next week, so shall I stop by then?" He asks.

"Nathaniel what? What are you talking about?" I ask confused.

"Great I will make sure to bring you that book I told you about. The Lost One, remember?" He says.

My heart starts to race when I hear the book title. Nathaniel had told me about the story, and how a young woman was tormented by a stocker for years. She had been too scared to report what had been happening to her, but instead she started training and preparing herself for the day she would need to fight. He said it reminded him a lot of me, and that I was stronger than I knew. He was warning me! Something had happened and the Alpha must have found out he helped me, he is in danger! Was there someone with him right now? Was this the last time I would talk to him? Was I about to lose the last person on this earth that gave a damn about me?!
