Chapter 2

Oliver

“Alpha, are you sure that’s your mate?” Asked my Beta, for the 10th time this morning. I was looking at a picture of her on my phone while we rode the elevator.

He looked me in the eyes, his green eyes concerned. He averted his gaze quickly, and rubbed his hands through his blonde hair. My nearly unnaturally bright blue eyes flashed yellow, he was offending East, my wolf.

“You have a problem with my mate, Chase?” I growl. He was my father’s Beta, and I trusted him with my life, but I’ll be damned if he questions who the Lady gave me. She smelled human, I admit it, but I will not simply reject my true mate. She was my only, and I was hers.

The chairman meeting was supposed to be about the merger with Delta Clinics, and I adjusted my red tie. “Alpha, the humans are here.” Growled Delta.

These were all men that worked with my father, he was killed by the West Port Coven, a den of greedy vampires. I would have my revenge, but first I must secure my stance as Alpha before someone tries to cause disloyalty. We were more than just a pack; we were running a multimillion-dollar corporation, and I was head chairman.

“Let them in,” I say as I sit in my chair. I was bored out of my mind, but ultimately this was the last thing my father wanted, and he would get it.

I knew it was a good idea, because it would make us the only hospital chain a supernatural could come to. It was right on the border where all the territories intersected, but no one could go to it because it wasn’t owned by one of us.

If the blood suckers got it, we wouldn’t be able to use it, because of the feud they had created. There was also the chance that they would purposefully withhold help until the last second.

But with the stroke of a pen, it was mine. I now owned all the hospitals on the East side of New Apple. I was already a millionaire, it wasn’t about the money, it was about the principle of the fact. I am the most powerful Alpha in the city, and what I had done was like throwing chum in the water.

I know when word gets out that the merger actually happened, I would get all kinds of nonsense. I would get idiots who think that they are stronger because I’m young. I will get those who try to backstab me out of my business, or backstab me in general because I don’t have an heir… because I haven’t claimed my Luna yet….

I sighed looking out the window, wondering what she was doing right now.

The day went on slowly after that, and I was bored out of my mind with the business side of Alpha duties without my Luna. I yarned for her, and every time I saw her, I had to mentally fight East in my mind to stop from marking her and bringing her home. I didn’t know what else to do other than watch over her from a distance, and today would be no different. I looked at the clock and saw it was 11:30. I had no idea it had gotten that late. Shit!

I got into my black Corvette and got stuck in traffic on the bridge. I can’t believe it!

The shop was already closed, but she can’t see my car, not where she lives, I thought to myself.

Why not take our mate home? Questioned East.

She doesn’t know me! I have been stalking her, dumbass. Who willingly goes with a stranger?!

If she were a wolf, maybe, but as a human, she doesn’t have the instincts we do. They have to earn their mate’s love. Then win her over, dumbass. He growled back flatly.

He was right… why does he have to always be right? I thought. I blocked him out before he could laugh at me.

I got out of the car and heard a rouge about to attack her, but she had money on her, and he became more interested in the money before I interfered. I didn’t care, I shifted into my black wolf and tore him to shreds so she could escape.

I mind linked my Beta to come with $500, spare clothes and a cleanup crew. It was raining so their job would be easy tonight. I knew that money wasn’t hers. And it put a pang in my heart that she was probably scared and unhappy.

“Chase, I’m going up, I want 3 guards patrolling her route home from now on.” I commanded and didn’t look back, walking out of the alley in a white t-shirt and black jeans.

“…. Yes Alpha.” He said hesitantly with most likely a bow.

I went inside the shit apartment complex. How she lived here was beyond me, but I would not interfere with her life… not until I claim her. She has a right to live her life as she sees fit until then.

I got off and went to 1005. She was so scared; I could smell her fear through the door.

Poor little mate of mine, my wolf whined.

I wanted to take her out of this place right then and there, but she wouldn’t understand. I heard her in the shower. I pulled out the spare key I got, because I bought the complex when she moved in… and got drunk off her scent. She smelled like a meadow of daisies and dandelions on a summer day… I could have stood there forever, but I couldn’t. She was getting out the shower, and I sped out, making sure to fix the door.

I let out a sigh and tomorrow I am seeing her. I don’t care about those old farts, they have their mates. Why should I suffer because she’s human?

“Lady why me?” I grumble. I got in my car, Beta was waiting by it, he had parked his escalade behind me to make sure no one would try anything… Because I had left the damn thing running.

I drove around, breathing her scent, it was faint, but it was there on my shirt, and the heat in my car had amplified it.

I wish I could have taken her home, but I can’t… She was human. How would this even work? What if I hurt her, or what if she was afraid of me? What if she rejects me when she finds out what I am? These were all logical responses, because I didn’t even think human-wolf mate relationships existed… and I am immortal so long as no one kills me… This was the biggest question on my mind, it was the question that kept East silent…

Would I have to watch her grow old, frail, and die? I shed a single tear in the privacy of my car, because it just wasn’t fair. What if I won her love for her just to die in my arms after only a few years…? Die of illness… Die of a jealous wolf…. Die from me being too rough, or on accident…

Was the Lady really this cruel...?
