Chapter 3
Gentle, shuffling footsteps on the landing carpet outside my bedroom door gently pulled me out of my flashback and back into reality. Sitting up from my bed once more, I grabbed my phone and looked at the time. 8.10 AM. Grabbing my bag from up off the floor and my leather jacket and air pods off of my desk, I turned around and began to make my way out of my room and downstairs for breakfast.
“Morning love!” a soft gentle voice rang out making me glance up briefly from the floor as I shuffled into the kitchen, to see my Mum sat at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee in her hands. “Did you sleep well?”
“As well as I could. I’ve just been thinking recent things over!” I replied before slumping myself down into a chair opposite her. “Where’s Dad?”
“He had to go to work early today. There’s some stuff he had to sort out for the upcoming selection process. Have you had any thoughts on what you're going to say to Sam?” She asked quietly, biting her lip, and looking at me in earnest. “It’s been nearly 3 weeks since you found out about us!”
“Mum, do we really have to talk about that right now?” I sighed loudly before crossing my arms against my chest. “I don’t know what I want to do yet. It would kill him if I ended it with him. You know that!”
“You know you don’t have a choice. It’s the right thing to do!” Mum pleaded. “For you and Sam. If you carry this on, it's like leading a lamb to slaughter.”
“I need time okay. Just let me get graduation over and done with and this stupid selection process and then I’ll get to Sam okay!” I demanded angrily before standing and marching towards the fridge and yanking open the door, before grabbing a bottle of orange juice and a pre-packed cheese sandwich. “Right, I’m off. I’ll see you later!”
Silently, I crossed the kitchen, fully aware that my Mum was eying me up carefully, opened up the back door, and let myself out into the warm brilliant sunlight. All around me screamed summer. The birds were chirping noisily in the trees and the sun was already high in the sky, beating down its warm golden rays down onto my skin. Pausing briefly, I grabbed my air pods from out of my pocket and carefully slipped them into my ears before selecting my favourite playlist on my phone. Without a care in the world, I sauntered down the garden path and out into the street, following a small crowd of other students that were also making their way to the college. I knew Mum was right. The longer I carried this on, the more Sam would get hurt. And the thought of a pack of wolves ganging up on him and destroying him filled my heart with sadness, but I wasn’t ready to let him go.
It wasn’t long before the large brown and glass window filled building soon sprung up in front of me, sat atop a large grassy hill. Just in front of the college entrance was a large, seated area with granite seats and tables that was already filled with students laughing and chatting, surrounded by leafy green trees that provided much-shaded relief from the sun. Hundreds of students were quickly walking through the green wrought iron gates and up the grassy hill towards the college for another day of learning towards their ambitious career choices. Students in their cars were also driving slowly up the hill and out of sight behind the college building towards the student carpark, where more students would be congregating, sneaking in their quick ciggies before the day begins. It seemed almost cruel that all these humans were oblivious to what they shared their perfect world with. Werewolves weren’t the only magical creatures lurking in the shadows. I had recently found out that alongside werewolves, there was also vampire clans and witch colonies, which luckily, all seemed to live in harmony with one another.
Stepping through the gates, I quickly sidestepped to let a large group of giggling girls that were behind me pass. Bowing my head slightly and letting my hair partially cover my face, I inhaled deeply. The scent of sweet sickly perfume from the giggly girls, alongside the smell of freshly cut grass and summer flowers, filled my nostrils. The perfume made me crinkle my nose up in disgust. This was one of the many things that I found fascinating about being a werewolf. Our powers and abilities were second to none. We can run as fast as the wind, we are as strong as a herd of elephants and we have teeth that are sharper than a hundred razors. Our claws could tear down doors and rip up floors, we can rip up small trees straight from the ground and we are faster than a cheetah. We can also track anyone and anything by their scent and smell, thanks to our excellent sense of smell. People say a dog's sense of smell is great, but ours is a hundred times better. Nothing can be kept secret if there is a werewolf around. We can listen to people’s conversations and hear sounds from around 25 meters away and we can hear through walls and doors. We are the ultimate machine and I take pleasure in knowing that no one around me knew exactly how deadly I had now become.
Silently, I closed my eyes and listened to the noises that surrounded me. I could hear everyone's footsteps beating the ground in an oddly calming rhythm, snippets of conversations came filtering through, and from somewhere behind me, I could hear a fly buzzing in annoying desperation. Turning around slowly, I watched as the fly became more entangled in the spider's web hanging from the gate when a familiar scent hit me like a bus. Sam was close by and his scent made me hungry. Lifting my head and zoning back into my surroundings, I glanced around and smiled broadly as a tall, slim, blonde-haired guy walked up to me before enveloping me in a tight bear hug.
Sam was the typical college eye candy. Tall and slim but with a buddling six-pack and muscular arms, most of the girls cooed over him in the corridors, the classes, and in the canteen. It was even worse when he was on the pitch playing football with the other lads at lunchtime or even playing football for the college team. He had blonde hair which he always gelled up and warm chocolate brown eyes that always twinkled when he smiled which always seemed to draw you in, wanting more. He had the becoming’s of a chiselled jawline that still had the faint tinge of puppy fat and a cute button nose that sat above soft, velvet lips that always crinkled when he smiled. His smile had the same effect on all of the girls, so it seemed when he smiled. They all went weak at the knees, as so did I but he was all mine! And Sam made an obvious point of personal displays of affection. All the other girls knew he was off-limits.
“Hey, Ros baby! Come here you! Mmm, how much I have missed you, my gorgeous girl!” cooed Sam lovingly before planting a kiss on the top of my head.
“It’s only been the weekend babe,” I laughed teasingly before pushing Sam roughly up against the railings with a loud bang.
Hungrily, I began passionately kissing his soft velvety lips and wrapping my hands around his neck before letting my nails gently tug and scratch at his skin. Slowly, I let my tongue explore the wet, warm cavern of his mouth while grinding my body up against his before Sam gently pushed me away in mock shock.
“Woah, babe! What has gotten into you?” Sam asked, grinning excitedly, and looking around carefully as the last few stragglers made their way up the hill past us, none the wiser at what just happened.
Biting my lip cheekily, I shrugged my shoulders and looked at Sam carefully. “I'm sorry. I just got a bit carried away there. You don’t know how hungry you make me feel lately!”
“Oh yeah?” Sam queried, raising an eyebrow, and looking at me wildly before leaning in close and whispering into my ear. “Come round mine tonight and we will see how hungry I make you, once I have finished with you!”
