Chapter Six - Pretend for the day (Part 1 of 2)

Farrah

I was waiting outside Asher house for him. I had texted him to let him know I was outside. I hoped he wouldn’t make me late. I had my eyes firmly on the door, tapping my fingers on the steering wheel. The door opened and out walked Asher, but he wasn’t alone. An older woman came out after him, and she looked maybe in her sixties. I guess that is his Grandmother. I watch him with her. He kisses her cheek and hugs her. I smiled, it was strange seeing him that way, but I don’t know anything about his relationship with her, but it was lovely to watch.

Once they pulled away, Asher’s Grandma looked over to where my car was. She smiled and waved, and I did the same back. She hugged Asher once more before heading inside, and Asher came over and got into my car.

“Morning,” I smiled.

“Morning, I apologise for my Grandma,” He laughed.

“No need too, the two of you are sweet to watch,” I smiled.

“Yeah, my Grandma is the only person in this entire world that I love, that I care for. She is the only person who has never hurt or left me,” He said, sadly.

I reached over, squeezing his hand.

“I am sorry you have been hurt, but I am glad you have your grandma,” I smiled.

“I am over it,” He shrugged, “But yes, me too. Um, she wants you to come by after school,” He added, looking at me nervously.

She wants to meet me. Why? It isn’t like I am dating him or something.

“Why?” I asked, surprised.

“Because she wants to meet you and thank you for making sure that I can home safely last night, she is going to make you some cookies,” He said.

“You told her I brought you home?” I asked, and he nodded.

“So, please tell me you will come by because if you don’t, she will keep getting on at me until you do, and she will spend all day baking,” He said, looking at me with pleading eyes.

I didn’t want too, not really, but not because of her, but because I think it would all be a little strange since Asher and I have only met. I would feel bad if I never went though, since she is going to bake for me.

“I will come,” I said, blushing.

“Thank you, and please do not mention my Grandma to anyone, OK?” He said softly.

“I won’t, promise,” I smiled.

“Thank you. We should get on the way, and stop for coffee before school,” He said.

I nodded and started the car. The conversation seemed to flow easily between us. I was strangely feeling at ease around this morning. I was nervous about meeting his Grandma after school, hoping she doesn’t get the wrong idea about Asher and me.

We grabbed our coffees and headed to school, pulling up and finding a parking space to sit and drink our coffee. We still had ten minutes until classes.

A few people looked at me strangely when they saw me in my car with Asher. I understand why they looked surprised because I am sure Asher is never around girls like me. He is around girls like Maisie. I ignored the eyes on us. I wish they would back off. We are only drinking coffee and talking. It isn’t like we are making out in my car.

“Ignore them, none of them is worth it,” Asher said.

“Sorry, I can’t help it,” I sighed.

“Shall we give them something to talk about?” He asked smirking.

I tensed when he said that a little afraid to ask what he means by that. I hope I am not giving him the wrong vibes, making him think that I want something from him because that is not me.

“What, what do you mean?” I stammered out.

“Relax, I don’t mean anything crazy,” He chuckled, “You want to pretend to be my girlfriend for the day?” He added.

I thought he said he never meant anything crazy. I think pretending to be his girlfriend for the day is the definition of crazy. No one would believe that.

“What? Like anyone would believe that, even for a second,” I giggled.

“They would if we make them believe it, just for the day,” He said, “I want badly to mess with everyone, and give them something to talk about. Please?” He added smirking.

I wanted to say no, but at the same time, there was a small part of me that what to do it. It would be something different, fun and unusual for me. And it was only for one day, right? Not even a day, just the time we are in school.

“I can’t believe I am agreeing to this, but OK,” I said, “What do we do?” I added.

I may regret this by the end of the day, but it was time I had a little fun.

“This is gonna be fun,” He laughed, “Nothing too drastic, maybe hand-holding, hugging, and what are your thoughts on kissing?” He added smirking.

“Kissing?” I said, nervously, “I don’t think I can do,” I added, chewing on my lip.

I do not want my first kiss to be like that. I would like my first kiss to mean something. I could feel my cheeks heating up as I thought about it. Asher was looking at me, actually, it was more like studying me.

“Farrah, have you not had your first kiss?” He asked softly.

Yes, his voice was soft, but I am sure in his head he is thinking God, she is pathetic! I could turn and tell him, no, but I was a terrible liar. I turned away from him and nodded. I was embarrassed.

“Farrah, you don’t need to be embarrassed about it, there is nothing wrong with it,” He said, “But why haven’t you kissed anyway?” He added.

“How do you think? No one is interested in someone like me,” I said, still refusing to look at him.

I feel his hand land on my thigh. I shudder and slowly turn to face him.

“There is nothing wrong with you,” He said, “The problem is with everyone else,” He added.

I sighed, shaking my head. The way he was looking at me was freaking me out. I swear he seems to be getting closer to me with every second.

“We should head in. The bell is about to ring,” I said, and quickly got out of the car.

I had to get out of the enclosed space that I was in with him. I closed my car door and rested against it. I sigh, running my fingers through my hair. I hear Asher getting out of the other side, and he was appearing in front of me, only moments later.

“I am sorry, Farrah, I never meant to make you feel uncomfortable,” He said, “We don’t need to pretend, it is OK. I don’t think you are up for it,” He added.

“I am, it will be fun, but just no kissing,” I said.

“OK, no kissing, for now,” He said, nudging me, and laughing.

I relaxed after that. I know he was only messing with me. I think. I still can’t believe I am going to do this. I giggled and shook my head. He offered me his hand, which I took, and he pulled me closer to him. I stumbled, falling against his chest. He caught me in his arms.

“Sorry,” I whispered, looking up at him.

“It is OK, but easy now, we have only been together two minutes,” He chuckled.

“Stop,” I laughed, slapping his chest playfully.

He winked, pulling away, but he kept a hold of my hand. I took a deep breath, and we headed inside, hand-in-hand. The moment we walked in the door, all eyes were on us.

Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all.
