Chapter 1 - The Beginning.

Tiny dots of light danced before her eyes.

Was it a dream or a memory?

"I don’t know!" said a very tensed voice.

"I didn’t see it happen!"

The dream or memory or whatever it was dissolved and vanished like a reflection on water, and instead fragments of thoughts began to drift through her head, as if she were waking up from a long, deep sleep, late on a Sunday morning.

That’s when she noticed the pain in her head for the first time. It hurt on one side, a lot, as if someone had given her a good solid thwack with a baseball bat.

Her thoughts sharpened. What was this pain in her head all about? Nobody had warned her about pain in her head.

Why was she feeling pain in her head?

"Megan? Can you hear me?"

The smell of mint got stronger again. It reminded her of her cousin Bart, he was always chewing mints. Why was she smelling mint?

"Her eyelids are fluttering. Like she’s dreaming."

She couldn’t get comfortable. The mattress felt like cold concrete. Nonsense, she knew her bed was comfortable, except she was sleeping on Nick's sofa. That was the only place she hated to sleep, it was so uncomfortable, sometimes it felt like Nick put rocks in it.

Where was Nick? And why was she sleeping on the sofa? Did they have another fight?

"Don’t try and move, Megan. Just stay still and open your eyes, sweetie."

She rolled her head to one side.

"Ow!"

She opened her eyes.

There was a blur of unrecognizable colors and shapes. She couldn’t make out what they were.

Where the hell was she?

She asked herself as she squinted hard. Her mother was looking at her with a very worried expression.

And there were two other men in the room, one was in a coat, so she assumed he was the doctor.

The other, she had no recollection of.

Who the hell were these people?

She asked herself as she squinted hard.

"Mum."

She called out slowly, trying very hard not to focus on the pain in her head. Oh it hurt so bad.

"Yes sweetie."

"What the hell am I doing here?"

She asked as her eyes started to get used to the surroundings.

Her mother looked at the doctor who stared at her.

"Megan, do you remember what happened?"

She was confused for a moment. What did happen? Last she remembered she was in her boyfriend's house. He was going to make spaghetti and meatballs and she was ordering pizza because she knew his cooking was terrible.

"I remember being with Nick. Where is he?"

She asked as she tried to sit up.

Pain racked her body and she felt sore all over.

"Owww! Why does it hurt so bad."

She cried out and her mother tried to calm her down.

"Sweetie just stay still."

"Megan, do you remember what day of the week it is?"

What sort of dumb doctor is this? She asked herself as she frowned at him. Everyone in the room seemed to be waiting expectantly for her answer.

"Day of the week? It's Friday!"

The doctor nodded and scribbled down in his notepad while her mother looked dismayed.

"Do you remember how old you are?"

"Oh my God! This is ridiculous! I'm twenty eight."

She cried out loud and then the sharp pain came back again.

"Just lie down Megan. Let the doctor do his job."

The other man said and Megan frowned.

"Who are you?"

She asked and the man looked taken aback.

He laughed nervously.

"It's me Anthony. Remember?"

Megan was puzzled. She didn't know any Anthony. Much less any cute Anthonys.

"No, I'm sorry. I don't know any Anthony."

Her mother's jaw gaped.

"But sweetie! He's the one who brought you here remember?"

"Brought me here? I don't even know why I'm in the hospital!!"

"Okay. Let's all calm down. I'll ask you one final question Megan, then I'll leave you to rest."

The doctor said and Megan nodded her head.

"Do you remember what date today is?"

He asked and Megan nodded.

"Of course. That's easy, it's the tenth  of April."

Everyone in the room except her mother seemed to be grossly disappointed by her answer.

She really couldn't understand why. And she couldn't seem to remember anything. Nothing at all.

Nothing except vague memories of her being on Nick's couch and ordering pizza while he claimed he was making spaghetti.

"Megan... Today isn't the tenth of April."

Her mother had said before the doctor asked her and the strange man named Anthony to leave.

What did her mother mean? What was going on?

She asked herself as the doctor approached her with a pencil thin torch and asked her to follow  his fingers back and forth. He asked her more questions and scribbled on his clipboard the entire time.

A nurse with a green uniform came in a few minutes later and gave her two pills and claimed that they were for the pain.

"Can I call my boyfriend please?"

She asked the doctor and he looked up from his book with a confused expression.

"Sure you can. I just have a few more questions to ask you."

"You've already asked me so many other questions!"

She complained but the doctor ignored her.

"I'm sorry. Just one more question."

"Do you remember anything from your accident?"

"What accident?"

Megan retorted and the doctor sighed.

"The one that brought you here, to the hospital. That's why you have all those bruises."

Bruises?

Megan asked as she checked her arms and found out that there were a few angry bruises on her arms.

"I don't know how I got these!"

"Well, you just relax and try not to worry for now."

“First we’re going to get you a CT scan and see if you’ve done anything serious to yourself, but I think you’ll find things will start to fall into place soon."

Megan nodded slowly, still very confused.

"What happened to me doctor?"

She asked and the doctor shrugged.

"Apparently on your way here you got hit by a car and you hit your head hard on the pavement. Anthony was kind enough to bring you, it appears as if the two of you were together."

"But... But... I don't remember him."

The doctor shrugged.

"We'll find out soon enough why you don't. Just relax."

The doctor walked out of the room and for a few minutes Megan was left alone in her room deep in her thoughts.

Few minutes later a nurse came to her room to wheel her to get her CT scan. Her mother and the stranger called Anthony was still waiting outside the hall. She waved at her mother nervously as they wheeled her for her CT scan.

She still couldn't figure out what was going on.

Apparently Megan's CT scan was "unremarkable," which had made her feel ashamed of her mediocrity.

"We’re concerned about your memory loss, so we’re going to keep you overnight for observation," said the doctor with the red plastic glasses.

"Oh, okay, thank you."

Megan self-consciously smoothed her hair back, imagining a row of doctors and nurses with clipboards sitting next to her bed, watching her sleep.

As the doctor left, her mother came in a short while later with a hopeful smile.

"There's someone here to see you Megan."

"Is it Nick?" She asked expectantly and her mother frowned.

"No, it's not. It's a friend of yours. You invited him over."

"I did?"

Megan asked in dismay and her mother nodded.

"Yes, you did. He called quite a few times."

Her mother replied as she raised up her phone.

"Come in." Her mother beckoned the stranger in.

A tall man walked in. His appearance alone was seductive. The man's rugged features were alluring. He was wearing a charcoal black tailored suit which made him look a tad more overdressed than the rest of them. His raven black hair was combed back and his face carefully structured. His dark brows were actually graceful but currently furrowed in a frown.

As if God had molded him just to spoil his eyes. The cold blue eyes of the man were full of intensity. He had a straight nose and sharp jaws.  And a sexy pair of lips that was in a form of a frown.

"Who is he?"

She asked her mother and the man's jaw seemed to drop in disbelief.

"I told you she doesn't remember anything. I was hoping she might remember you though."

Her mother said and Megan turned to look at the man hoping she would remember something.

Nothing.

She could remember nothing.

"Who are you?"

She asked again, a bit pissed off.

"Roman Harrington."

"Ugh! I don't have time for this! Why is he here?"

"And where the hell is Nick!"

She asked as she suddenly felt mad that she had been in the hospital for what seemed to be hours and he didn't even as much as visit her. It was very unlike him.

"Nick?"

The man named Roman spat out in annoyance.

"The only reason I'm here is because of the three texts messages and five missed calls you left me after panicking about being pregnant."

"Pregnant!"

Megan almost screamed and her mother glared at Roman.

"I haven't gotten around telling her that bit yet. What part of she doesn't remember anything did you not understand?"

"Wait? Who's pregnant?"

Megan asked in shock as she touched her belly lightly while looking at her mother and Roman.

Roman scoffed.

"I think, the question you should be asking is who is the father?"
