Part 6
Nate couldn’t keep his mind off that omega for some reason. The way she walked out and didn’t bother to give him any attention really hit him. It never happened him. He’s a star football player! People worship the ground he walked. How can she not bother to talk with him? Also he offered her his drink shouldn’t that appease her? The other girl would be swooning by now and making cutesy Instagram posts.
When she didn’t stop in the hallways for him or smiled during the classes he had no option left but to talk with Ashton. He was her closest friend after all.
“Hey man!” Nate patted on his shoulder, tugging him down on the far end of the cafeteria.
Ashton winced, “Nate”
“It’s been long time”
The quarter back scoffed. “Oh you mean since yesterday evening when we were on the ground together for four hours”
The hellhound winced at that. He should have not started with that. Schooling his features the Alpha casually leaned forward. “So what’s the deal with your friend?”
Ashton wrinkled his brows. “Are you here about Allie?”
Ashton and Nate have known each other for almost four years now. Even though they started training for the football under same coach and are in the same team they weren’t exactly friends. Simply because Ashton was goody two shoes who didn’t approve of frat culture and partying after every match. That’s why the Alpha never really had a connection with him.
“Ah you know me so well”
Ashton let out a sigh. “Forget it. I am not telling you anything, Nate”
“But why?! I just want to make it right”
The quarter back rubbed his face, “You don’t understand. She’s my friend and...you’re you”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing. Forget I said anything” Ashton took a sip of his coffee, avoiding his eyes.
Nate bit back his growl. He wanted to bang the table or his head against the table really. Why couldn’t he be like others and give him whatever he wanted? This is why they are not friends.
“Look I just need to make it right”
“Why is that?”
“Because I feel guilty!” Nate yelled at the top of his voice, his vein prominent in his forehead. That did the trick. “I need to make it up or else I won’t stop feeling this way.”
Ashton opened and closed his mouth, suddenly at loss of words. “Oh” he breathed. “I didn’t know. Fine what do you want to know?”
Nate grinned. He was so easy. Only if he didn’t have deep rooted passion for football he would have totally become an actor. That’s what most of them said to him anyway. No wonder they are right.
As he was on his way to the field, Nate spotted Allie in the cafeteria. Only that the omega was behind the counter. What was she doing there? Whatever he had another opportunity to talk to her. After all he missed her on the track. Biting back his grin, he walked in.
“Hi,” Allie greeted, no real cheer in her voice. Her hands were gliding across the screen in front of her. “What can I get started for you? The menu on the left side is not available right now”
Nate gave her his best sly, playful grin. “Did anyone tell you that you look sexy in green? It’s totally your colour”
She blinked at him, her face blank. “What drink can I get started for you?
“I didn’t know you work here”
The omega sighed. “I don’t. I’m covering for Rachel”
“Oh right. Your roommate. How is she?”
Allie gritted her teeth, her lips pursed as she stared at him. “May I help you with your order? Please”
“I feel like we got off on the wrong foot.” He held his hand out. “I’m Nate. You’ve heard of me, I’m sure”
“You’re holding up the line, Nate. Place your order or please move away.” Allie smiled, extra cheerful. There was a gleam in her eyes that he had never seen before. “Unless...” Her eyes darted around the area. “You’ve never been inside a university cafeteria before?”
The Alpha couldn’t help but chuckle, leaning his hip against the counter. “You’re funny. I like that. It’s hot.”
“And we are done here” Allie motioned towards the other guy taking the order and swapped positions with him. It was worth a try.
“What is the deal with you and that runner chick?”Ben asked as soon as they exited the locker rooms an hour later, after refreshing showers and time to cool down. He was another of the player on the team. A liner back. Most of the times they don’t see things eye to eye. The Alpha could easily tell that the question had been burning on his tongue for ages. After all Ben loved to keep up with his life. “Like, the whole team noticed your little spat in the cafeteria today”
“Did they now?”
“Yes they did”
Nate sighed. “She hates me and I don't know why. I haven't done anything wrong.”
Chris, his best friend snorted while trying to stuff his socks in the bag. “Really?”
“Okay fine I may crossed a line with that comment but in my defence I didn’t know. And I tried to apologise”
Ben made a sound. “Apologise? That doesn’t sound like you at all. Do you really want to sleep with her that much huh?”
The Alpha huffed. “If I wanted to sleep with her I would have already done that”
“I don’t think you can get her to want to fuck you,” Ben said, other football players flocking to their bench. Fortunately Ashton was not there as he had to stay back behind on the ground. “I don’t think she’s like the girls you sleep with. She’s too...Studious, or something. Way too smart for you. Can see right through your celebrity bullshit.”
“And also she is Arelis favourite student,” Another one pointed out.
“Who?”
“Our college Dean. He adores her”
The Alpha laughed and put his hand over his heart. “I don’t care if she’s his daughter. I can get her to fuck me if I want”
Bens lips twitched up. “I don’t believe you.”
The frat boys laughed around, Nate snorting as he leaned against the lockers. What did they think do him? He can do whatever he wanted and still get away with it. Ben tapped his fingers against his closed lips, then arched his brows.
“Want to make a bet on it?”
“A bet? For what?”
Chris shook his head. “Guys stop this now”
Ben took a step forward, a smirk playing at the corner of his lips. “Your car”
Nate swallowed loudly. “You’re serious? You want to make a bet to get my car?”
“Yes I am” Ben narrowed his eyes, wiggling one finger towards Nate. “Let’s do it. You can prove to others that you can get whatever you want”
“I don’t have to prove anything to anyone”
“Sounds to me like you don’t think you can do it.” Ben teased him.
The Alphas shoulders bobbed with a silent laugh. He shook his head, then swallowed. Anger coursed through his veins. Without warning, he dropped his towel on the floor and surged forward. How dare a beta question him?
“Hey, hey” Chris yelled, running towards them.
Nate was immediately on him, squeezing his shoulders, holding him in place by his mesh tank. It would be so easy for the Alpha to snap his little
neck. Another couple of players joined them, trying to break them apart. Chris stood between both of them. “Chill out. It’s all in good fun. This is just a joke, yeah? No one’s making any bets about Allie, who is an actual person, yeah?”
Nates nose practically touching his. They stared at each other, glint in their eyes. Though the Alpha was trying to smile, his eyes flared with fury, his voice crawling out of his throat. “Just who the fuck do you think you’re talking to, Ben?”
“I think I’ve been quite clear.”
He gripped his tank tightly and pulled him half over, raising him in the air. Players shouted and stuck their arms between them, Nate relenting and releasing his grip. He smoothed his palms down his shirt, then tapped his knuckles once against the lockers behind him. His right hand straightened in the air between them.
“Fine, I’ll do it then.”
“Nate,” Chris warned, his hand gripping his wrist. “You don’t have to do this.”
Ben cheered, pointing the finger at him. “Now that’s the man I know! Fuck yeah!” He straightened his shirt and picked his bag before storming out of the locker, leaving all of them behind. The air in the locker room shifted as soon as he went.
“Captain, she’s a good one. She tutored me in Psychology.” Sheldon quietly said.
“Also the star runner of the uni,” Another one piped up from the corner.
Chris, his best friend, made a noise. “And Ashton's friend. Think about it again.”
Nate clutched his head in between his hands, breathing loudly. He should have thought through before agreeing to it. Shaking his head, he stood up, meeting his best friend’s eyes. “I don’t back down from a challenge, and you know.”
