Chapter 4
Xavier Black
"I'm going to have to take my keys back." I mutter as I walk into the kitchen and find Megan sitting on top of the counter with a cup of coffee in her hands. "Or change the locks." I think out loud some more but she just looks at me with an amused smile.
"I had to wake up very early to talk to you. You know your assistant won't put me through when I call?" She asks and I nod while taking out the carton of eggs from the fridge and placing them next to her on the counter.
"Yeah, I asked her not to. If it's important you would call my personal phone or show up like you've been doing. What's up?" I ask, taking the bacon out too, just because she's here and she'll complain if I don't make bacon. The girl can't live without eating some form of meat for her three main meals of the day.
"I want to move out." She says and I stare at her for a while, allowing the silence so she can get her thoughts together. "I don't want to take anything either. I want to leave with what I came here with, witch isn't a lot but I can't do this anymore." She says and I sigh.
"When did you decide this?" I ask and some more silence follows but I know she needs time.
"Last night, when he came home smelling like booze and another woman. I want to leave while he's to busy paying another woman attention to smack me around. While I still have time." She whispers and I pulls her into my arms. I've been waiting for this day for almost a year now and although I wanted to force her to leave him at first I knew it was something she needed to do on her own.
"When do you want to do this?" I ask when I pull back. She has tears shining in her eyes but I know she won't shed them because she doesn't like to cry in front of other people and I don't do crying woman and she knows that. I can't even handle it when Candice cries in front of me.
"Today, now. He left for London this morning. He'll be back in three days and I don't want to be there when he comes back." She says and I nod before sending a text to my assistant that I won't be coming into work today.
"Okay, so lets have breakfast and we can take the car back. You can stay here until you find a place to live and we'll get you some new clothes." I tell, taking out a pan and putting it onto the stove before turning it on.
"Thank you, Xavier. I know don't allow people in a lot, so thank you." She says and I shrug my shoulders. The rest of breakfast is spent is silence and she waits for me to shower and get dressed before we both get into our cars and head to her house. She hands the car keys to the butler before getting into my car and I speed of. I've only been there once and I almost beat her husband to a pulp so I just stayed away and allowed her to live her life.
"Where do you want to go?" I ask as I pull up to the mall. She rambles of some stores and I just nod along as I answer some e-mails from the office. For about an hour I just walk behind her and pay when she checks out before my mother calls. I sigh and reluctantly answer the phone.
"Hey, I went to the office and they said you weren't coming in today." She says before I can even say hello.
"I have something to deal with." I tell her. She doesn't know about Megan and Megan has never met my family, purely because I keep business and family separate, well, at least I tried to.
"Okay, well when you're done dealing with that I need you to start making effort with Skyler." She says and I grit my teeth. The girl acted exactly like I knew she would last night and to be honest I don't want to talk to her at the moment. I'll give her some time to cool of and talk to her at Candice's spelling bee next week.
"I'll talk to her next week, not a moment sooner. I don't have time to deal with an emotional woman right now." I tell her, I'm already dealing with one I really don't need another one.
"This is the woman you're going to marry Xavier. Make some effort." She scowls and I sigh.
"I'm not going to marry her if she doesn't want to marry me." I tell my mother. I'm not in the business of forcing anyone to do anything they don't want to.
"You know why we're doing this, don't play stupid with me. You're going to marry her so make some effort and get to know the girl." She says and hangs up the phone. I sigh and look over at Megan who's looking through some dressed. Why I'm here when I could have just asked Gabe to handle this for me is a mystery to me but for some reason I feel like I should be here. I'm the one she came to for help and so I have to be the one to help her.
"We should get some lunch after this." She says and I nod my head as the lady rings up all the clothes. "Do you have to go back to the office after that?" She asks and I shake my head.
"No, I took the day of. I was thinking we could check out some places after we're done." I tell her and she nods. Although I offered her a place to stay it doesn't mean I want her to stay long. I like living on my own and I don't like people in my house for to long.
"Yeah, okay. I was thinking a furnished apartment so I don't have to worry about that too." She says and I shrug. She knows I'll take care of it all but I like the fact that she doesn't want me spending money on her, even when I don't mind it.
"If that's what you want we can do that. I'll make some calls." I tell her before handing the girl my card and calling my assistant to set up some places for us to see after lunch. We leave the mall after that and head to a restaurant to have lunch.
"I have to find a job." Megan says as we wait for our waiter to come and take our order.
"You can work at the club if you want." I tell her and she shakes her head.
"No, I need something that can give me a fresh start. I met him at the club so that's the first place he'll look." She says and bites her lip. "I'll figure it out." She says. "On my own." She adds before I can offer help her look for something. "I don't mean to be rude but you're already doing to much. I don't want to take advantage of you, I've done too much of that already." She says and I nod my head. The waiter comes to take our order and as he leaves the table a group of teenagers walking into the building catches my attention, not because of anything other than the dark haired girl walking with them.
A guy with blond hair throws his arm around her and whispers something in her ear causing her to blush and let out a laugh. They slide into a booth two tables away from us and I stare at them. The blond guy takes a seat next to her and takes her hand in his like it's the most natural thing in the world. Another blond dude points in my direction and when she notices me staring at her she goes pale. I smirk at her and go back to talking with Megan who's smart enough not to ask why I'm staring at Skyler.
