Part 10

/Reed POV/

There’s a heavy hand on my shoulder, holding me tight enough to let me know that trying to get away wasn’t a good idea. I twisted my head towards Rowan, who mirrored the same expression. A sigh escaped my parted lips, tearing my eyes to look at the Luna in front.

“Mom.”

“We need to talk.” Her nostrils flared, eyes shifting around the living hall, her tone sounding grave. “Now!”

“What is it, mom?” Rowan tried to ask but only got a glare in return which made him cower. The Luna can be scary when she wants, a fact that made the members steer clear of him most times. Growing up, we thought it was fun, but it only made it difficult for us to get through with her.

We got steered into an empty room, hearing the door shut and the lock click only a few seconds after we entered. I noticed a chandelier on the ceiling right in the centre; the walls were adorned with landscape paintings dedicated to moon goddess and elements. A tribal carpet hand made by the omegas of our pack covered the entire floor.

In the middle was a round table with, few leather armchairs standing on opposite ends. A tray sat on top, filled with crystal glasses and a carafe with amber liquid.

“I need a drink!” She muttered under her breath before pouring a glass. My mouth parted, watching her gulp the entire liquid in one go, face scrunching.

“Mom! Take it easy. What’s going on?”

Rowan leaned forward; a concerned look etched across his features.

My legs went so stiff on the armchair that I could barely fold at the knees, my hands going to the sides, fingers digging into soft leather to release some of the tension that’s starting to grip my entire body.

“What do you both think you are doing?!” She said, slamming the empty glass on the wooden table, folding her hands, the ring on her finger catching the light shining down from the chandelier.

I blinked at her in confusion. “We just came from training.”

Well, less training, more talk, to be exact. Erin came to see us so unexpectedly in the forest that I couldn’t believe it. The omega had finally gave into our offer, and we could start the act for everyone. I wanted to discuss the whole thing with our mother, leaving the fake courting part, of course, but before that, she cornered us. Our mother appeared bewildered; she neatly brushed hair almost resembling a nest and eyes wide. She did not even let us go back to our bedroom before dragging into this space.

She snorted, “Are you seriously trying to tell me it was only two of you?”

I swallowed a lump in my throat, watching Rowan squirm in his seat. He appeared easily flustered under situations like this and gave in. I straightened at her question, surprised that she knew about Erin. How did she find out?

“Are you keeping an eye on us?” I countered.

Rowan made a sound. “Do you have a death wish?!”

A burst of high pitched laughter broke out of my brother, echoing around the room. She crossed her arms together, chin raising in defiance. “What do you take me for? One of the pack guards saw you three during patrolling. Why are you both hanging out with that lunatic?”

“A lunatic?” I echoed. “Mom, it’s Erin. We all used to be close. Did you forget?”

“I would love to forget.” The Luna scoffed. “But your father would not shut up about her. That omega’s bad news, and I don’t want the future Pack Alphas around her.”

“Tough luck.”

I was surprised at Rowan's reply, my eyes almost widening. My brother met our mothers stare, his face impassive, eyes blank. He seemed determined to defend the omega.

“Excuse me?!”

“She is our soulmate, and we are planning to court her. Erin will be the future Luna.”

“Like hell, she will be!”

I generally didn’t feel cold, but there’s a shiver I couldn’t seem to shake at those words, and it went along the prickle at the back of my neck, a general unease that made my body thrum with it.

“Mom.” I cleared my throat. “Rowan is right. We are planning to court her.”

“You too?! Seriously!” The Luna exclaimed, slapping a hand on her forehead. “Have you both gone insane? Did you not hear a word I said? She is bad news, and no one in the pack likes her.”

“We don’t care. They will have to accept her as our omega, their Luna. It’s final.”

Rowan nodded his head in agreement.

“Typical Alphas.” My mother rolled her eyes, shaking her head in disappointment. “I expected better from my sons. How can you both be so selfish?!”

“That is quite an assumption,” I hissed, unable to keep the venom out of my tone, jaw clenched tight. “We have been nothing if not accommodating to all the demands of our people.”

Rowan cleared his throat. “Besides, the only reason we are in a hurry is for them so that the council does ruin their lives.”

Our mother looked away from us in scorn, “Were I still the Luna, I would think twice before making such a decision. You are leaving them with no option.”

She had no power as of now, considering our father passed away. Her title will be given to the future mate; until then, our mother acts as a temporary leader.

“Then it is a good thing you don’t have a lot of time! Why don’t you let us decide for ourselves?” I snapped back at her.

It’s a low blow; I understood that the second those words left me. Her face crumpled at that, shoulders sagging in defeat, lips parting. “So you are willing to go against your mother for that home-wrecker?!”

“Mom! That’s enough!” Rowan raised his voice. “She’s going to be our mate. We would love it if you get on with that sooner and accept her.”

“That’s never going to happen. She will never be part of this family!” Our mother huffed, lips pressed in a thin line. Without another word, standing on her feet, she turned around and left.

We both watched her leave but made no move to call her back. A heavy feeling settled in the pit of my stomach, and a sigh escaped my lips, thinking of all the words left unsaid.

The following day as I decided to take a stroll in the garden, I heard omegas whispering. As soon as they saw me, a silence settled over, but I got the gist of it. Immediately I rang for my beta and asked him to check on Erin’s family.

It baffled me how much interest these people had in others lives. How can they openly discuss and comment as if it’s their issue, to begin with? Charles was quick to get back to me about it, and as suspected, they admitted Uncle Adam to the clinic. Then I realised why Erin agreed so easily to our ridiculous proposal.

Rage and disbelief coiled in my belly, followed by annoyance.

“Why would she keep this from us?” Rowan angrily tugged on his locks, pacing from one end of the room to the other.

I shrugged. “I don’t know, but I think you should talk to her, Rowan.”

“Why me?”

“Because I am going to visit Uncle Adam.”

My brother nodded his head, still lost in thought and jaw clenched tight. Judging from his reaction, his conversation with Erin won’t be a smooth one.

The harsh winds tearing around picked up speed as I drove into the familiar route. It made the back of my neck prickle, even with woollen scarves bunched up, the tip of my nose went practically numb from the cold. But my Alpha was used to it. There’s a familiarity with this weather ingrained, allowing me to navigate a safe route through a terrain that’s tough to handle even in better conditions.

I spotted Esther right away, standing by the bill counter, arguing with the person on the other side. The omega was just a pup when we left for the States, but now she looked anything but that. Her hair was identical to her sister, only shorter and curly.

“What seems to be the problem?” I asked, immediately reaching to stand next to her.

“Alpha Reed.” Esther gasped, turning around and bowing down to me. “I-Hello.”

“Esther.” I nodded before turning to the older woman on the other side, pinning her with a raised brow. She flustered.

“Alpha Reed. H-Her only paid the bill for one night, but we have to keep the patient for a little longer. We already have a lot of people waiting for the room, so….”

“She wants us to leave!” Esther completed with a huff.

I gritted my teeth at that. “That patient is going to be my father in law.” Her eyes flew wide at that, mouth parting, mirroring Esther’s gasp as I continued. “Upgrade him to the most expensive room in here and send me the bill. Got it?”

She dumbly nodded her head at that.
