Beautiful Creature

Kenton

I sit back and watch her from a distance as she stays by the creek, likely trying to work through this new revelation.

I want to be there, desperately, to help her figure all of this out. But, she clearly needs to do this on her own.

'I don't like this,' my wolf grumbles, wanting more than anything to go to our mate, to help her—to be close to her now that we've found her. He's desperate to be with her.

How had she been right in front of my face this whole time and I not have any idea? I question, She's gone to the same school as me for the last six months, and not once did I get any indication that she was mine. Did she just recently turn eighteen?

I don't like it either, but from her reaction, she didn't know that she had been anything other than human. She needs time, I tell him, hoping to placate him.

'She's beautiful,' he says, admiring his mate. I'm surprised that she's a white wolf—they're incredibly rare—basically unheard of. Not to mention, typically our wolf's coat reflects our hair and has our same eye color. Unless they're a rogue, then their eyes are red.

Like me, my wolf has black fur and green eyes, but Amaris's wolf's white coat isn't the only thing that differs from her human side. While Amaris herself has black hair and dark brown eyes, her wolf has a white coat of fur and bright lilac-colored eyes.

I've never seen such a beautiful creature in all of my eighteen years.

I have heard of a pack of wolves who have white coats, but I always thought it was a legend—one not even of this realm.

It is said that the pack of white wolves have magical powers—able to harness the elements: earth, wind, fire, and water—but only a single element each.

Their pups are always born in pairs—twins. But, Amaris doesn't have any siblings that I know of—her only friend being that one boy that took his life a few days ago.

When I heard what happened, I felt sick, wishing that I could have done something more, knowing that I should have stepped in and stopped it. Instead, I went to my father—but he forbade me from stepping in, we do not interfere with human ordeals, he had said.

I'd still left an anonymous note describing what I had walked in on in the bathroom, but then I found out later that same day that I'd been too late—he was already gone. And those boys? They were only expelled, and that was only because one of them confessed. But, what kind of justice is that? And since when does rape not warrant jail time?

Amaris lays down next to the creek in her wolf form, resting her head on her paws, her ears twitching this way and that, likely listening out for any kind of a threat that could be lurking within the coverage the dense forest supplies.

At some point, I must have fallen asleep because when I wake, darkness has descended upon the forest and Amaris's white wolf is no longer at the creek.

Fear rushes through me that something may have happened to her, but I would think that I would have been awoken if that had been the case. Following her scent, I make my way back through the thick greenery, heading back towards town.

When I break through the tree line, I take in the school's empty parking lot, save for my Range Rover.

Releasing a frustrated growl, I realize that I don't know where she lives, and can only hope that she's okay until tomorrow comes and I can seek her out amongst our classmates.

She's fine, I think, trying to reassure myself just as much as I am my wolf, We will see her tomorrow.
