Chapter 4: so much for messing with XAVIER CALLUM

Chloe shut the door angrily, flinging her bag to the couch. Rachael collapsed on the chair, rummaging her hands through her head and breathing in sharply from her mouth.

"Xavier of all people. Xavier?" Chloe yelled at Racheal not giving her the room she wanted to think.

"You didn't know who I was talking about? It's fucking Xavier Callum and he is after me!" Racheal yelled at Chloe. Chloe wasn't giving her the right space to think. It was almost like she was adding to Rachael's problems. What was she saying, ‘she was indeed adding to her problems!’

"You are going to bring down the article aren't you?"

"It's not that easy"

"Easy? Are you trying to protect mum or yourself!"

"Don't start" Rachael warned. This was the last thing she wanted.

"Don't tell me that!"

"If I take the article down, Magnus is not only going to come for me but every one of us"

Chloe rested her back on the couch, breathing in sharply. Her legs tapped incessantly on the floor. Rachael understood why Chloe felt this way. Britney was like a mother to her. Both Chloe and Rachael were working their ass off to get money for her chemo. Rachael saw this as an opportunity for her mother's treatment and all of them to get a better life, but she got it all wrong. Now she was in a deep mess.

The door opened and Xavier looked up as his eyes traveled to the door. He had a stern look on his face and Lucas knew better not to bring the news Xavier had been waiting for. That was the article taken down.

Lucas sat opposite Xavier while he lit his cigarette with a lighter.

"It has been taken down" he announced, watching as Xavier sucked the air from the cigarette and puffed the excess smoke out. A smirk crept into the corner of his mouth as he tapped the bottom of the cigarette, taking the ashes off, and watched as it fell to the table.

"Didn't take long enough to break her" a chuckle escaped from his lips afterward.

"Should I release the woman?"

"Not yet" Xavier stared blankly into space for a while. "The deal isn't sealed yet"

"The article has been taken down, she already uploaded an article, stating the accusations in the first were false."

"False" he snickered. " When she agrees to work for me, then Britney goes home," he said and Lucas knew what he said was final.

"how's the purchase?" Xavier asked.

"Dormos said the police are unto him and he might not deliver as fast as you want him to be. The UNN had him the last time, but he managed to get out with no charge. If they find something against him once more, he's afraid he might answer to court" Lucas tried to explain, but Xavier only humphed.

He stood up from his seat, walking gradually towards Lucas. Lucas breathed out sharply, his eyes held fear and Xavier could sense it even though he tried his best to hide it.

Xavier got closer and held Lucas softly on his collar, adjusting it. He did the same to his collar while Lucas tried to keep his breathing in check. He was tensed.

"Ask Dormos if he is more scared of the police than of me" Xavier's cold voice came forth and Lucas nodded incessantly.

Xavier left him and watched as he rushed towards the door. "And"Xavier called out. Lucas paused, not turning to look at him.

"Get rid of that cologne, I hate it"

"Yes sir," Lucas said and immediately left the room.

Just when Lucas left, the door opened, revealing Jerry, his secretary. He had a slight smile on his face and he always had it on. Sometimes Xavier wondered what he found so amusing most of the time. He was still new, still getting used to his system, and had no idea how Xavier could be.

Xavier was under pressure of getting a new secretary as soon as possible for his trip and his NO LADY rule made it tougher for him to get an appropriate secretary. Jerry was the least close to a disaster.

"What is it?" Xavier snapped at him, returning to his seat. He was already frustrated and Jerry's presence added to it. Especially when he kept violating the rule of knocking before entering the boss's office.

"Racheal Anderson is here to see you" he announced and immediately Xavier developed an interest in what he was saying.

"Interesting," he remarked. "Send her in" he demanded and Jerry left not after bumping into a chair on his way out. How clumsy.

Rachael wiped her sweaty hands on her trousers when she saw the secretary approaching her. Her nervous self stood up almost immediately, not realizing how much she was showing it off.

"Come with me" Jerry smiled at her, leading the way, while she trailed from behind. Her hands were shaking, and her feet were cold. No matter how hard she tried, even the breathing technique wasn't working for the anxiety she felt at that moment.

They got to his door. Rachael Immediately recognized the door. How could she forget?.

Rachael was about to knock, but Jerry opened the door instead, giving her the room to walk in. He shut the door and Racheal's heartbeat increased as she struggled to turn around. The secretary didn't give her enough time to prepare herself and she hated him for it.

Rachael after gathering up all the courage left in her frail body, turned around with a weak smile on her pale face. The moment she saw him, her legs went wobbly. Her anxiety doubled too.

Xavier gazed at her intently, not even pausing for a blink. She was grateful that he didn't have the stern look on his face because she might melt right away because of it. His eyes left hers as he scanned her head to toe, making Rachel doubt the attire she was putting on. She didn't go corporate this time, having on a pair of ripped jeans and a happy birthday t-shirt. She was a blogger and not an office worker. That was exactly what she told herself when she selected those clothes.

He shook his head in disapproval, turning to face the paperwork on his desk. At that point, Rachael thought if the man in front of her was sane. Out of frustration, she cleared her throat.

"I'm with you miss Anderson"

"Rachael" she corrected, warming up her guts. With the way he snapped his head to look at her, it was obvious that he was surprised by how she responded to him.

"That's a lot coming from you miss Anderson" now Rachel knew he found it amusing making her pissed.

"I had no idea Mr. Callum" she shot back at him

"You see unlike you miss Anderson" he stood up from his seat, walking over to the wine stand. "I don't mind being addressed by my last name" he took a drink from the stand and brought it back to the table. "You know what I do mind," he said, looking at her from where she stood. Rachael felt the cold shiver run down her spine because it felt like he was staring right inside her soul.

"I don't like my name being dragged inside the mud"

"I already cleared your name"

"True," he said to her, pouring the wine into a glass. He looked at her once more. "Seat" he ordered coldly to her and Racheal immediately succumbed. Her legs were already weak. Acting stubborn about his offer could get her down to her knees.

She walked towards him and took a seat. With her eyes not leaving his, she reached her hands towards the glass and took a sip to show she wasn't intimidated.

Xavier smirked at her also taking a sip of his drink.

"But you haven't still taken my offer"

"Do I have to?" she shrugged at him

"Your mother is still with me"

"Aren't you concerned that I might ditch you the moment my mother gets released?"

"I will take her back and also....." he squinted his eyes, darting his fingers around trying to remember something. "Chloe, your beloved cousin," he said and Rachael's heart sunk.

"Why not me!" She banged her fist angrily against the table. " why do you keep getting them into this?"

"It's more fun" he smiled at her. "And don't get too angry at it" he pointed at the table. "African blackwood. Worth more than you"

"My hands can't break a wood worth so much, Mr. Callum"

"Not break. I'm afraid you might mess up the DNAs of some of my victims, I've been trying to catch"

"If you were so effective, you wouldn't have to try"

"When I stop chasing then for a while, some might think I lost trail or got tired, but what they don't know is; I give them the space they need and strike when they least expect it," he said coldly, striking the adequate amount of fear into Rachael.

"Your lips are getting dry miss Anderson. Have a drink" he gestured at her. She stared at him for a while, feeling the lump developing in her throat as she reached for her glass of wine, devouring the content. When the glass left her lips, she spoke.

"What do you want?"

"I want you to work for me"

"And my mother gets released?"

"Your mother gets released" he assured her.

"Deal," she said in a shaky voice. "But if you hurt a hair on her skin. I'll...." She broke down. There was nothing she could do. The tears welled up in her eyes and she didn't do anything to stop them from dropping.

The cold look on his face didn't soften, hitting her with the realization that he was indeed the devil.

"I don't work that way, miss Anderson," he said, reaching for his glass and taking a sip from it.

"What exactly will I be doing for you?" Rachel asked, cleaning her tears off. He had seen enough of it.

"You'll know. Your mother will be sent to you as soon as possible, but you'll have to start work here on Monday" he said to her.

"How soon?" she wanted to be sure.

Xavier snickered before responding. "Today," he said and a wave of relief washed through Racheal. She stood up almost immediately.

"And don't come dressed like a high school teenager," he said addressing her trousers and t-shirt. Rachael sighed, grabbing her bags and heading for the door. So much for messing with XAVIER CALLUM
