Chapter 7 Good day to die hard

I was awakened by the loud rattling of a chain. Slowly, I opened my eyes, and my vision was blurred at first, followed by a loud bang in my head. At first, my memory was desolate, but I started scrutinizing the whole place with my eyes.

"See who's awake," a mocking voice said, interpreted by two voices giggling." It seems he is indeed a cat with 20 lives," the voice taunted again.

That is how my mind started replaying the past events in my head. Starting from the scene where I started the commotion by killing Mr. Clarkson, how I escaped with my team through the tunnel, the hot pursuit on the desert surface, and the hard collision.

Not only that, how I was awake in the hospital or clinic. How I taunted Ryan and the loud bang that sent me into unconsciousness again.

"Does the syrup work on his physique?" I heard Ryan inquire from behind him from someone I didn't recognize."I guessed he should have healed and been strong enough to face the crowds now."

The mention of syrup made me remember Kira. Different thoughts started occupying my mind at once. I could feel my body going restless. How is she doing? Is she feeling good? What is going on in her niche? Numerous questions started surging in my head.

Could it be that I have started developing feelings for a strange girl I just met? I asked myself inwardly. I can now remember what my mom used to say about love.

"Love is a sin, Rey Reed," she would always tell me. "Love is a sin which is committed by the weak and pathetic beings, which makes them vulnerable to death." She would tell me whenever she was training me on the field in our compound.

"What did you mean by that?" I asked her in confusion. "If you don't love my dad, then why did you marry him?"

"Shut up, Rey Reed," she growled back at me. "I married your dad under the circumstances," she replied sharply. "

Let me tell you something, Rey. That day you fell in love, then you have surely signed your death warranty. "

"What about the other girl?" Ryan's voice jolted me out of my thoughts. His gaze was now on the male figure behind him, and I could guess that he was a doctor.

"Is she responding to the syrup treatment?" He inquired again in a loud voice, and I could guess he did it intentionally so I could hear. Without being told, I know he is referring to Kira.

"Touch her, and watch as I will skin you alive." I threaten Ryan, but he just looks at me and smiles.

"Let's see how you will survive in the arena. " He whispers to me, and I watch as he marches away.

"The girl is also alive, hale and healthy." The other man beside Ryan answered.

"Good," he acknowledged. "Prepare and bring them out within 10 minutes." Ryan orders and hikes out through the black steel door.

The men walk over to me and unlock the chain that holds me down. I tried shaking and fighting my way out. That is when I discovered that those people had tied my hands and legs.

I waited patiently for them, hoping that they would unlock me so I could get a chance to run. It seems they noticed what I was trying to do because they erupted into laughter.

"Don't worry, kids," one of them said. "Mr. Ryan has already warned us and we are not ready to take that risk."

Before I could spell Jack, they carried me and hurled me into a sack. I could feel myself suffocating, but they didn't seem to care.

Thankfully, the sack is a transparent one, which kind of gives me the grace to see what is going on outside. Those men lifted me as if I were a piece of paper, and they started walking through different dark corridors.

At first, I tried to fight my way out, but it was futile. It seems Ryan had told them a lot about me, and they weren't ready for any of the things that could lead to their death. After what seemed like forever, we finally reached a metal gate and I could hear the cheers of the crowds.

Eventually, the men dropped me down in front of the metal gate, and they let me out of the bag. They didn't wait a second before the men returned towards the direction where we came from. I looked around, trying to decipher why they would leave me here alone. I was still examining the place with my eyes when my sight met with that of Kira.

She was clad in black trousers and a small top which revealed her abdomen. Behind her stood four hefty men, which made me guess the reason why those two men that brought me here returned inside.

"Rey Reed, Kira's tiny voice jolted me out of my thoughts.

"Wow, my Rey Reed is alive." She squeezed happily. The mere sight of her brought a strange feeling to my heart.

"I guess my mom is wrong about love," I mumbled inaudibly. Before I could blink, she jumped on me, her boob pressing tightly against my chest and I could feel a cold shiver running down my spine. She was holding me tight as if I would run away. At first, I didn't respond because I was too shocked to make a move. She seems to notice it because she quickly withdraws herself.

"I... I... am so... rr..yy," she stammered. "I was too excited to see you. I am deeply sorry." I could see the happy look on her face collapsing, and I felt responsible for her sudden change.

"Come closer," I mumbled to her, and she raised her head, looking at me with surprise. "Come closer," I told her again, with my head shaking like an agama lizard. Slowly, she took a few steps towards me.

"I missed you too," I whispered into her ear. "I thought you didn't survive the collision. I have promised to skin that carrot dick asshole alive and feed his body to the crows." I said truthfully. Her face lit up with happiness and she hugged me again, this time tighter than before.

"Those assholes have chained my hand," I whisper in her ear again.

"Ohh," she said and peered at the chain that was used to bundle my hand and leg.

"If my guess is right, you give that asshole and the girl beside him a tough time," Kira said, and I smiled inwardly. Her hair was tied in a ponytail and her lips were so enticing that I could feel them calling out to me.

"I will do anything for my friend," I whispered. "Especially when I discovered that you are alive."

"Same here," Kira answered.

"I gave them a hell of a lot of difficulties, especially when I discovered that you were alive. They had to sedate me twice."

"Our next fighter is Rey Reed and the other girl." I heard Ryan's voice bellowing through the other side.

The four hefty men move towards me and unlock the chain holding my hand. Each one of them grabbed me and Kira by the neck and pushed us in the direction of the exit while one of them stood to open the door.

Both of us were yanked out, and the bright sun shone directly into my eyes. It took a while before my eyes were able to adjust to my atmosphere and I gasped at the sight in front of me. The same goes for Kira. In front of us stood a metal cage which was filled with about thirty or more well-built men. Their faces were covered with masks, which made them unable to see their eyes. They wore soldiers' camouflage with black boots.

"Are you thinking the same things as mine?" I heard Kira's voice.

"Yep," I answered, my gaze still fixed on those combatants that looked like giants. "Seems like the rest of my extra lives are going to end here," I answered back.

"I am not dying anytime soon," Kira replied boldly, and I was awed by her will to survive. She is just like my mom. Even when there is no way for her to survive, she will never abstain.

"What about you?" Her tiny, sweet voice sounded in my heart.

"I have about 20 lives, and the angel also hates my soul. So, I don't plan to die anytime soon." I answered her, and the men pushed us into the cage. I could feel those soldiers' hard gaze on us, especially me. And I could guess that they have probably heard more about me.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Ryan's voice cut through the massive pressure in the cage. At this stage, you will have to fight each other until death; no retreat, no surrender, and no mercy. Whilst only five of you will have to emerge as survivors, Ryan announced, and I could feel the hatred in his voice.

"Seems today is the day after all," Kira elucidated beside me while giggling softly, and my heart flushed with happiness at the sight of her smile.

"Yes," I said."A good day to die hard." I retorted with a smile plastered on my face.

A buzzing sound was heard, and a small hole was visible on top of the cage. We watch in curiosity, waiting for whatever they are going to send out again. After what seemed like an entity, different weapons were thrown down on the cage floor. including short knives, spikes, bows, and arrows.

I could see Kira eyeing the arrow with her eyes. I am sure she was thinking of picking it, but the close combat wouldn't allow her to use it. The soldiers started picking up the weapons one after another since they were getting closer to the spot. After they are satisfied, they step back, gesturing for us to pick ours.

I moved in closer, squatted, and grabbed two short knives and a double dragon stick. Kira also squatted low beside me. She picked up the bow and the arrow quiver.

"How did you plan to use that?" I was surprised. "You know, we are fighting a close-range battle. It would be difficult for you to aim and shoot." I tried talking to her in an attempt to make her change her decision.

She let out a sly smile that always melted my heart. "Don't bother yourself, Rey Reed," she said with an assuring tone.

"I was trained and bred for this. Besides, this is a good day to die hard, as you said earlier. So, why are you panicking now? Or are you probably afraid that the angels are going to accept your idiot soul now? "

I chuckled softly and hit her playfully on the arm. "If you say so," I countered. "Then let go and kick some ass."

I stood up and grabbed the hilt of my knives very well, while the double-stick dragon was kept for plan B.

"You know what?" I implored and directed my gaze back to her.

"Stay alive for me, and don't give them the satisfaction of seeing you as a weak being," I said with a significant expression.

"I should be telling you that," she said with a smile that revealed her dimples.

"Don't worry, either we die-hard together or we scale through it together."

"Ladies and gentlemen," Ryan's voice booms out again.

"Let the show begin." He concluded. Instantly, the soldiers faced off against each other while some of them were coming in our direction.

"Kill them all." Ryan screeched, and we attacked one another.

"Together," I said to Kira.

"We are undefeated." She answered.

The next thing I heard was the whoosh of her arrow, followed by the loud, painful scream of one of the soldiers. I examined the soldier, and I could see the arrow lodged in his skull.

"This is my 25th kill ever since I joined your team," Kira stated proudly.

"So, let's see who is the most skillful fighter between us, while the one with the highest score will order the other partners around for a week."

I understood what she was trying to do instantly; she wanted to push out the other side of me. It was like she knew how I spurned being ordered around, especially by a girl.

"As you wished." I ratified. Just then, one of the soldiers slashes at me. I step aside while his blow moves past my face.

The soldier bought back his weapon just as easily as he had wielded it. But I was already prepared this time. I grabbed his arm and twirled it until I could hear the sound of his bone-cracking, but I wasn't done. I twisted the hand harder and the soldiers screamed in pain, which called the attention of others.

Finally, I stabbed him in the back while blood gushed out. I remove my knife from his back and slowly lick the blood of the soldier. The other soldiers seemed to be afraid because they stepped back in shock. I could hear the crowds roaring in satisfaction, while three dead bodies of soldiers were already on the floor. One of the soldiers ran at me with a cub.

I swivelled out of the way, spun behind him and grabbed him by the hair. I plunged my knife into his ear and blood spurted onto my face. The soldiers screamed in agony, trying to get free from my grip. Unfortunately for him, I wasn't done.

I wrapped my arm around his neck and stabbed him twice in the back before I finally sliced his throat. The soldiers went down dead, and their blood gushed out throughout the cage's sandy floor. I took a glance at Kira, and I could see her looking at me with awe and satisfaction.

All around us, the crowds were cheering like crazy, and I could tell by the surprised look on their faces. Well, I couldn't blame them. I am sure they were wondering how a scrawny boy like me was taking down such hefty and well-trained soldiers with so much ease.

Unknown to them, they just unlocked the beast in me, all thanks to my mom's training. Now I am more determined to fight my way out, just like my dad had told me earlier in my subconscious, and I won't give up until death.
