Chapter 3

Burris's POV.

Chris must be crazy hungry to be talking nonsense, so I asked Meier to take care of her dining.

"That's enough Chris, Meier is dead." I reminded Chris.

But Chris was too hungry and had no control over herself. She drained all of Meier's blood and looked a bit of a mess with her new dress covered in blood.

She was still sucking the last bits of blood out of Meier when she heard my voice. It wasn't until there was nothing left that she snapped out of it.

"Dead? I bit someone to death?!" She looked at me in horror and her eyes were much widened.

Chris jerked her hand loose and the maid immediately fell softly at her feet.

"Ah!" Chris screamed, backing up quickly with her hand braced against the floor.

She was like a human who had just turned into a Blood.

But the Elders said that when they found Chris, she was already an adult Blood, albeit a low rank.

I glanced at Meier's body, which was dried out with her eyes protruding. Her black maid's outfit was also stained with deep blood marks everywhere.

Clearly, how rude the diner was.

I walked over to Chris and squatted down, smiling deliberately, "Don't be afraid, Chris. just get used to it, you'll taste more delicious blood later."

Chris said she hated blood-sucking monsters, and now she was ruder than a monster herself.

It was my little punishment for her, she shouldn't have given the Prince a look of disgust.

"Why didn't you stop me?" Chris covered her face in pain, rolling tears falling from the corners of her eyes.

"Of course not, it's not rude to peek at a woman's bath in our family, it's only rude to interrupt someone's dining." I said with a smile.

Perhaps Chris heard the sarcasm in my words and she was downright furious, glaring at me fiercely.

No one in the family had ever dared to glare at me like that, and I spawned curiosity about Chris.

I remembered the first time I met with Chris, she was a lowly Blood who couldn't even hold her head up, but now she seemed to have changed completely.

"Chris, tell me what happened during this time of running away, okay?" I stroked her head and tried to compel her with a gentle voice.

She whimpered sadly alone, and only after a while did she regain her composure.

"Burris, I've actually lost my memory, I don't know what happened, and I've forgotten my past memories. Can you help me? Please." Chris looked up at me helplessly.

Her voice was hoarse and she looked a little haggard and a little pathetic.

Beyond that, I saw a hint of cunning in her gray eyes.

I was sure she's faking it right now, but I was still satisfied.

"How did that happen?" I froze for a moment, feigning surprise.

Chris frowned and said in distress, "I don't know, I woke up like this. You're going to help me, right?"

"Of course, I'll help you." I said with a softer tone.

"Thank you, Burris," Chris said, her tear-stained eyelashes fluttering up and down.

She acted dependent on me, but she still gave me a resentful look unconsciously, and then unfolded a smile at me when she noticed I was looking at her.

Soon, the other servants dragged Meier's body out and quickly cleared the room. I carried Chris to bed and sat on the edge of it to tell her about her past.

"You're the lowest blood in the family and my fiancée." I looked at her and started with a short summary of who she was at the time.

Chris's POV.

In conversation with Burris, I learned the identity of this current body and how that identity related to him.

Chris, now me, was found by the Elders of the Burris family only a short while ago, and by then this body was already the lowest of the last generation of vampires.

No one knew who turned me into a Blood, but Burris was able to determine that I belonged to their family, so the Elder with the power of divination appointed me to be Burris's bride.

When my bloodline was strong, Burris and I would have a grand wedding, which would be more like a sacrificial ritual, for on that day, as the bride, I would be the Prince's sacrifice.

He would drain my blood as a way to get the energy out of my body.

"Why me, of all people? I look pretty low class, don't I?" I asked Burris suspiciously, who was now sitting on the edge of my bed.

"It is in the Elder's prophecy and his appointment, and no one can doubt him." Burris said indifferently.

"Okay, so you will marry me only to gain power from me, that's ridiculous." I said, looking at him with pity, "Isn't it sad that even as a Prince you can't choose your own marriage?"

The smile on his face froze again because of my words, and his eyes shifted between gold and red.

Damn it! He's pissed off again, I didn t want to be sucked into his blood again, which really made me feel awful.

"I'm sorry, Prince Burris, I misspoke." I said, bowing my head.

His eyes returned to normal, and the pressure that had coalesced around me vanished instantly.

"Chris, you always disrespect me and I can't let you off the hook every time." He warned.

"There won't be a next time." I assured him, still bowing my head.

"It better be, and I expect you to be at my disposal until the wedding." He looked at me with a dangerous look in his eyes.

Was that a joke? Was he asking me to consider myself as a steak that would be delivered to his mouth obediently? What a stupid request!

I kept my head down and didn't say anything, just made a gesture that I would obey him, yet in my mind I was planning my escape.

At night, I was to sleep at the place. Luckily, he's not sleeping with me, which settled me down a lot.

But still, in the middle of the night, I woke up to Meier's miserable death and couldn't sleep anymore.

I stepped out of the bedroom and found the lights outside bright. Two rows of maids stood neatly on either side of the spacious hallway, and they looked at me simultaneously as I pushed the door open.

The maid closest to me smiled kindly and spoke first, "Miss Chris, would you like a meal?"

I thought about the implications of dining and got a nasty chill in my heart, frowning at her and shaking my head, "No, I just wanted to get out and walk."

The maid looked at me worriedly, "It's almost dawn, you should stay in your room."

"It's almost dawn?" I looked over at her in confusion.

"Yes, the sun will come out, and we will lower all the curtains of the cottage, you may rest assured." The maid said seriously.

Ah, yes, vampires are afraid of sunlight. Wasn't it a good opportunity to escape?

The great joy washed over my head and I forgot the fact that I was a vampire too.

I happily went back to my room, ripped off the curtains and tore them into thin strips, wove them into ropes to be used as climbing ropes, and hung them from the windows.

Early in the morning, when the sky was lightening, I began to slide down the rope.

The window was about twenty meters above the ground, and the curtains weren't long enough for me to slide halfway down before jumping.

Everything was going well, but as I ran out into the pretty back garden, the first ray of the rising sun hit me with an unbearable burn on my skin, and I saw my body smouldering as it was on fire.

"Ah-" I rolled on the ground in pain, feeling like I was about to be burned to ashes by the sun.

My fangs were lengthening uncontrollably and my skin was turning from pale to charred in the sunlight. I fretted and freaked out, unable to resist the pain, and finally I hid in the thorn-covered flowers.

But the sun was getting bigger and bigger, and the burning pain spread throughout my body as more and more of my body was exposed to it.

Even though I used to love sunbathing at the beach, it would make me stronger and my skin would turn a healthy and beautiful honey color.

But at the point I hated it than ever, wishing the whole world to be plunged into darkness, wishing the sun to disappear forever, wishing these damn pains to roll away from my body.

I was almost burnt and I could smell the fishy smell on myself.

"Chris!"

A quick shout came behind me and I turned to the source of the sound to see Burris running towards me against the sun.

Damn it! Why did he look all right under the sun?

"Burris, help me..."
