Chapter 5 Chapter 5
Letting out her car horn as a signal for the security agent at the gate to know that there is someone at the portal, she waited for him to have a glimpse of the person outside to open the entrance for her to get innermost.
Driving into the compound, she stationed her car and came out of it, while taking her bag with her inside. Walking to the door, she rang the bell and Melanie came to open and let her inside.
"Good morning Ms. Abby", Melanie spoke out as she saw her standing outside when she opened the door and with a friendly smile, Abby responded to her salutation as she walked into the house inquiring about her mother's whereabouts.
Abby was told by Melanie, that her mother was in her room taking a nap and Abby, handed over her bag to Melanie, instructing her to make a glass of beetroot juice with a few ice blocks and bring it to her in her mother's room.
Lowering her gaze and nodding her head as a sign of comprehension, she retreated to the kitchen while Abby took the stairs up to her mother's room.
" Hey man, it is good to have you back", Warrens friends let out as they saw him coming from the junction. He was glad to be back home as he had missed his neighborhood.
Walking into the corridors of his neighborhood, he met with a lot of people who greeted him and welcomed him back. In the ghetto, going to prison was regular and to lost of them, when you disappear for sometime, it only means two things which are,
"It's either you are dead or you are in jail".
The thought of it made them very careful with whatever businesses they carried out as the cops could be turning around at any moment, and those who were in uniform, made it easy for them to be warned, but those who came in as civilians, were the most dangerous because they will come and mingle with them whereas they are looking for evidence.
There were different kinds of constituencies but in his, he was called the "Messenger". Warren came across the girls who danced at the bar where their plans were always carried out as it was own by their boss and he was the one to give them orders and make payments after rendering everything to the bigger boss whom no one has ever seen.
The girls were happy to see him back as Catherine had been crushing on Warren right from their teenage age and though she was a well-known stripper, her love for Warren was something she was hoping and praying to be reciprocated someday.
" Hi Messenger, I am happy to see you back here with us", Catherine spoke out walking towards him and displaying her seductive ways to batch his scrutiny and Warren smiled back looking at her and feeling the things she could do to her if they were just the two of them.
Warren was referred to as the Messenger because he was considered as the master planner and the brain in his group and his absence had greatly affected the running of things as he could be not available to ensure the rundown of the plans for the others to execute.
Finding a way to escape from Catherine and the other girls, he told them that they were to see him later that evening as he rushed home to go meet his other. Wearing a smile on his face as he walked through the corridor leading to the small apartment where his mother and himself live, he knocked on the door waiting for her to come and open it while he leaned on the wall.
His mother, asking who it was as she walked up to the door, unlocked it and when she pulled the door away to have a look at who was outside, she almost passed out with joy from the sight of her son. Shedding uncontrollable tears, she took her boy into her arms as she kissed him all over asking how he managed to go out of prison.
"Did you escape Warren?", she asked for minutes after hanging back as she feared that he might have gotten himself into more problems but Warren showing off all his teeth, told his mother that he had not escaped and that he was set free legally by the help of a lawyer who took up his case.
Tugging his mom, he carried her up letting out how much he had missed her and wished to see her day and night and he was going to make good use of this opportunity that life was offering him once again.
His mother let out a smile of joy as to what her son has said told him not to bother as it will come to pass if only he means it and Warren taking his Mother's hands, promise that he was going to visit his boss later to sign out and look for an honest job.
Things had started up with Warren on a brighter level but were it going to last given the kind of environment he resides in?.
With a worried look as she opened her mother's room and found her crying on the bed with a portrait of her husband and son in her hands, Abby walked to her mom and with a comforting tone she sat down beside her as she took her into her arms.
Knowing fully well how much her mother loves them even though they are gone, she could not do much but be there for her all the time.
" It is been years since they were brutally murdered in cold blood Abby", her mother spoke out as tears dripped down her eyes like a fountain. Taking a deep breath, Abby consoles her mother by telling her that they were in a better place and they are watching at her right now and that is not what they will want for her.
Raising her head from her daughter's arms, she asked her when the pain was going to go away, and Abby responded softly looking into her eyes,
"The pain will surely go away only when you will learn how to accept that they are gone and moving on from the past". Her answer was a straightforward one and she loved her mom so much that it hurts her to always find her crying over the dead whereas she was still alive and with her.
Yes, Abby could understand what she was going through because, she missed her father and her big brother too, but she had learned to accept the tragedy and live life like there is no tomorrow making an effort to help those who need her.
" Mommy, you need to get a hold of yourself, tonight you will be making me and some other people proud so please get up and be the strong woman that you have always been", Abby spoke out to her mother cheering her up. She had sworn to be by her mom and protect her no matter what it will cost her.
Mrs. Williams, rising to her feet and dropping the picture frame that she was holding in her arms, turned to her daughter and said,
"Today is yet another great day for me and the thousands of children out there so I have to be strong for all of them". Abby was glad to listen to her mom come back to herself, the bold lady she grew up taking her skills from. Telling her mom to go prepare for the event that was going to take place in a few hours, she proposed to give her stylist a call so that she could come to make her mum up.
Mrs. Williams showing appreciation to her daughter for her kindness let out that her father will be proud of the young lady that she had become.
Abby, hugging her mother and kissing her so dearly, left her room heading downstairs to meet Melanie, she remembered the smile that was on Warren's face as he was liberated from prison.
Warren had entered his room, and everything was just intact the way he had left it one year ago, except for the fact that it looks clean and it is because his mother had to do the cleaning once in a while hoping that her son was going to be released someday from prison.
Taking a glimpse at all his paintings and posters on his barricade, he smiled while falling on his bed with open arms murmuring to himself, " I am free at last".
The joy he was feeling inside was nothing he had ever felt before and he planned on living an honest life without having to think about any commitment to his boss, as serving jail terms was enough payback he could do for him.
Rising to his feet, he went off to the bathroom so as to have his shower and to change his clothes as well as eating his mama's delicious meal that he has missed for so long. Taking off his apparel, Warren entered into his bathroom saying,
"I have missed you all", touching the walls of his washroom and kissing them. It was certain that he had learned his lessons and that freedom do taste so good.
Turning his shower on, Warren could feel the cold water that fell on his hair and down his posterior, without having to bath fast as though you were on a mission, he took his time and washed his body removing all of the prison dirt that was still left on him.
" I will feel brand new after taking this bath as it is going to be a new beginning for me and everything that I represent", Warren spoke out as his thought narrowed to his Attorney again and this time, he could not stop to imagine her beautiful face and her pretty smile that made him smile like an idiot in front of her.
Slapping himself under the shower, he came back to his senses that a girl like her will never have anything to do with an ex-convict talk more of a poor guy like himself. Rinsing his body, he took out his towel and dried up himself as he strode out of the bathroom.
Abby had finished up her glass of beetroot juice and had asked for more licking her mouth in fulfillment after having what she desired.
"You know what Melanie, you have the best recipes for fruit juices", Abby spoke out enjoying her glass of beverage. Melanie, blushing at the compliment lowered her head in appreciation for what her mistress had confessed.
Abby was friendly to everyone mad while she was still having her little chit-chat with Melanie, her phone begin ringing and taking out her phone, it was Jimmy Lassek her boyfriend and partner at work.
Jimmy has been Abby's best friend since their college days and he has always been there for her coupled with the fact that, he is an attorney too and they share an office where they work with a common secretary.
Dropping down her glass of juice and picking up her call, she asked him what he had to say to her again apart from pestering her life up and down. Laughing bout loud on the other side of the phone, Jimmy let out,
" You are nothing without me my little Abby", he chuckle as the crunchy sound of something he was eating filled up the whole place.
"I cannot be anything without you my Lord, you unpleasant species created to bother my peaceful existence", Abby bombarded and they both laughed out at the same time.
Abby was happily talking to her friend and if he did not call then she would have done so as they both always found a way to be in constant communication either because of work or a result of a dispute between Abby and Bernard.
