Chapter 5 Escape with the Son of a Billionaire

I tried to retrieve my balance but my head was still hurting.

Despite the dizziness I felt, I tried my best not to burden Jason and the others. I kept up my pace with them although my eyes were still a little blurry. I dismissed the pain as much as I could as the adrenaline surged in my veins, giving me an extra kick of stamina and more will to survive.

We reached the exit door to the garage area and a wide space of concrete welcomed us with a frigid breeze, revealing the vivid sky of near twilight. We could still hear the howling and screeches like sounds from a dreadful nightmare. Only this time, we're living in the same hell we're all experiencing.

For extra precaution, Jason closed the door in case an infected person followed us. Li helped him and they both shoved a massive metal locker standing beside the door and used it as a barricade.

There was only one vehicle in the whole area and it shortly caught our eyes as we saw a trembling guy that was hysterically rummaging for something inside a black bag he was carrying. Beside him was a black and glossy, brand-new-looking car.

We went straight to it and when the guy saw us, he frantically got in front of the car and obstructed us away from it. On his face veiled an odd kind of fear, realizing we were four against him. I wonder if he was aware of what was going on inside the airport.

And then I recognized him as the complacent guy with bodyguards, endeavoring to get his way out of the airport by saying he's the son of Gerard Flitzenberg, the billionaire who owns a famous expensive car label. I wonder why he was unaccompanied in this place.

"W-what do you want? Y-You can't take my car away! You peasants!" he yelled at us, trying to sound brave although his voice was shaking with fear.

Although we're in a panic, I saw Li's face grimaced when the guy called us peasants. It was offending of course but we have no time for any arguments anymore.

"I-I'm sorry but we have no time to talk over what's going on. We need to get out of here now! Please!" I begged the guy but Jason was getting impatient.

He nudged the guy out of his way and was about to go straight to the car when to our horror, the shivering dude pulled a gun and pointed it at Jason. He seemed frantic because it was unmistakable he didn't know how to use it and that made him more dangerous than the monsters howling beneath the building.

"W-Woah! Hey! hey! relax!" Li yelled at the guy who now pointed his gun at me.

Jason instantly stopped and stared at me. I was scared he might do something that will aggravate my assailant more. But to my relief, he just stood there and didn't make any foolish move.

I raised both my hands on the sides of my head and swallowed the new emerging fear in my throat when the barricade on the door made a wild banging noise, as the howls and screeches become more audible behind that heavy locker.

"What's that?!" The blonde guy asked, looking more terrified as his hands tightened the grip on the gun. My heartbeat in every second that passed as I looked right at his hand, finding a perfect timing to yank the gun away from him.

"Look, my name is Harriet. And you are?" I struggled to keep my voice from trembling.

"T-Timothy."

"Okay, Timothy, I -I want you to know that when that barricade falls off, I guarantee you we will all be dead." I looked at him directly in his eyes. He was as desperate as we were but that didn't make a difference because if he wouldn't let us take the car, I was worried we would have to take it by force. "So please let us get into the car with you and get away from this place. S-somewhere safe."

I made my face as gentle as I could and then he lowered his firearm, as he glanced at the jammed door that must have already been crammed with the zombies, the way the heavy door was jerking from the force on the other side of it. He was confused but I think he was starting to trust me.

When he got distracted, I quickly took the gun from him expertly, pushed the button into safety mode, and hooked it in my jeans as Jason quickly approached the flustered Timothy. "Go and open it. You have access to it don't you?"

"N-no! M-my bodyguards have access to the car and I couldn't find any of them!" he twitched when Jason held him on the arm, trying to daunt him.

A loud, angry scream from the other side of the barricade made us more twitchy. There's no time!

"B-But it's card generated and I was trying to look for it in the bag when you all came!"

"Okay," Jason took the bag and searched every compartment of it. We all grunted in relief when he got it from the side of the bag and quickly swiped it on the AI lock of the door.

"Password!" Jason yelled at him.

Timothy stepped near the door and murmured "I am handsome."

Oh my god...

That made me roll my eyes. Li scowled again, looking unhappy and annoyed.

The door made a 'click' sound and opened automatically.

The barricade fell with a loud thud and a surge of ravenous zombies ran towards our direction.

"GO, GO, GO!!!"

With eyes large with terror, we all hurriedly pushed each other inside the car and screamed when the zombies sprung and landed their bodies on the vehicle. The adrenaline rushed through my head, thinking that if we were only a few seconds late from getting inside, those monsters would have already shredded us to ribbons.

"This is why I hate technology," Jason grumbled under his breath as he worked on some controls. I have no idea what kind of this car was because the regulators seemed confounded and it was far different from what we usually use.

I heard Timothy's odd breathing as he wheezed and heaved, quickly snatching something out of his pocket, and with dread, he breathed in an asthma inhaler.

"Jason! drive the car now!" I screamed at him and he looked as if he was dazed by my voice.

The zombies kept on slamming the car with their arms and body, and the glass window was already smeared with blood and small chunks of flesh that tore from their fists, as they tried to smash it with their hands.

Li was shuddering terribly while his hands were protectively embracing Mona, their eyes were shut tightly, not wanting to see the dreadful sight on the windows outside. Timothy was still trying to save himself from the sudden attack of his asthma as Jason tried his best to figure out how to operate the car because it seemed he wasn't familiar with the controls.

The palpitation of my heart was deafening in my ear, along with the horrendous ache of my head, making me feel squeamish. What was more difficult was, I could feel the pang on every part of my body getting worse as despair ate every hope that I had.

It was a nightmare. I wanted to cry but I couldn't. I can not afford to show weakness now. I have to survive this. We all need to survive this! I need to see my Dad and Carl! We all must live!

"JASON GO!"

Along with my scream, the car's tire screeched and Jason, without any reluctance, crashed against the corpses that were in front of the vehicle and sent them flying away from the parkway.

It seemed the bumper was dented badly by the force when the bodies of the infected hit it. All of us didn't stop screaming when one by one, a body went underneath the car, crushing it. It was sickening and Li was already retching on the backseat.

"Do you have any idea how expensive this car is?!" Timothy yelled at Jason who was already bathing in sweat as he fought to elude the incoming zombies that were running towards us, banging their bodies against the front and the sides of the car.

"Shut up!" Jason yelled and swore under his breath. His forehead was in a deep furrow, focusing on his driving.

"I can't believe what's happening. Are those zombies?! Good lord this is crazy!" Timothy croaked, grabbing his head with both of his hands.

We all puffed out in relief when we finally got away from the thick horde of zombies and watched how some of it was still trotting behind us. Jason kept on driving towards the wide freeway outside the terminal, away from this nightmare. It felt like a victory for us.

I couldn't believe we survived!

"LOOK OUT!!!"

We all screamed and I almost whack my forehead on the dashboard when Jason abruptly stepped on the break because something had slammed on the windshield of the car.
