Chapter 4

Emily's POV

"Dylan, why are you doing this? You said you'd never hurt me."

The room was dim because it was raining outside, and only the bedroom light was acting as a light. I looked at their naked bodies covered in old and new sex marks, and I couldn't control the anger and sadness inside me as I cried and asked Dylan.

"I'm tired of you, Emily, and we've been dating together for two years. We've only had sex a few times, and every time you've been like a dead fish and made me feel no pleasure." Dylan doesn't feel like he's at fault, all the fault is because of me, or so he thinks.

"I've had enough of you Emily. Emma is so much more enthusiastic and funnier than you!"

I stared incredulously, unable to believe that the reason Dylan had betrayed me was because of my rusty performance in sex.

"Emily, a bastard like you doesn't deserve to date Dylan! You're no different than any of those whores out there, only I'm worthy of Dylan's status!"

Emma, unlike a lady with an elite education, came to me wearing Dylan's shirt, provocatively showing me the marks on her body from Dylan's kisses. Very much so! Obviously they had made love so many times that she couldn't even keep her legs together!

Was this how they spent the month when I was working?

My legs were trembling and my heart was filled with great pain.

Why did things turn out like this?

"Emily, I know what you're dating Dylan for. I'll give you $20,000 and you must leave immediately and never bother us here."

"Dylan, do you think Emma is right too?"

I tried to grab Dylan's hand, but he shook it off. I froze there and looked at him dumbfounded. I hoped he would contradict what Emma said, we had been together for two years and I didn't believe Dylan wouldn't understand my character.

But Dylan didn't answer, which meant that he acquiesced! He really thought I spent two years dating him and caring about his daily life all for money! Was that the reason he's dumping me?

I thought I had found a good man, but I was wrong!

"Oh my God!"

"Emily! Are you crazy? Stop!"

Dylan's room still had the vase and dolls I bought, I didn't look at the bills Emma threw on the floor, smashing the vase and destroying everything I put there! Emma screamed loudly, Dylan tried to stop me, and I pushed him away and rushed out of the house.

It was raining hard outside, and I ran as fast as I could to the bus stop where I could get shelter from the rain, but I was still drenched.

I stared at the stone tiles on the ground in disbelief when the phone rang, interrupting my thoughts.

"Ms. Emily Joes, this is Ms. Hellen Joes' primary care physician. She is in a very bad condition and needs immediate surgery, so please come to the hospital right away."

Mom!

I became flustered and stopped a cab to go to the hospital. When I arrived at the hospital, the doctor told me that Hellen's condition had suddenly deteriorated and needed immediate surgery and that there was no time to lose.

He gave me three days to pay for the surgery, i.e, $300,000!

I felt a dizziness in my head. Hellen and I no longer had any family other than my father. The hotel's part-time job was only enough to cover my daily expenses and Hellen's living expenses. But the surgery needed $300,000, and I couldn't live without Hellen, but I didn't know where I could get the money!

Mom, why should you be the one to suffer all the evils? You are just a victim of fate!

I looked through the glass at the unconscious Hellen in the hospital bed and shed tears silently.

My mother, Hellen, worked alone in society since she just became an adult and then met my father.

She was a very beautiful and attractive woman when she was young, thus making my father, Toby Brown, pursued her madly. My father was very rich and would create all kinds of romantic situations that would make women's hearts flutter. Simple Hellen had no idea how hateful the man in front of her really was, and she easily fell into this man's trap.

She gave him all of her love, but Toby turned out to be a selfish and dissolute liar. He had a wife and a daughter and he lied to Hellen and told her he was single all the time. If Hellen hadn't told Toby that she was pregnant with his child, I suspect the charade would have continued.

I could clearly feel how upset Hellen was when she found out the truth, because I had just been through something similar to her. Hellen alone insisted on giving birth to me and raising me, but she fell ill from long-term exertion.

At first I didn't know I was an illegitimate child. After all these years, Hellen still had hopes for Toby, and she hoped that one day Toby would come back to her. And Hellen didn't want me to live in this world with hatred all the time. So when I was little she always told me gently that my father loved me very much.

She said, "Emily, don't blame your father. He actually loves you very much. He just doesn't show it."

This white lie continued until she became ill and the cost of expensive treatment overwhelmed our family. For Hellen's treatment fee, I found Toby's home at the address in her diary without telling her.

It was a sunny day and the weather was especially nice. It was a warm day with warmth in the air, but it wasn't for me.

I remembered clearly that they were celebrating Emma's 18th birthday. The atmosphere in the family was lively and warm, and Toby showed a strong fatherly love for Emma that I had never felt before.

Until that moment, I didn't know that I was just a humble illegitimate child who didn't deserve a father's love.

From that day on, I began to work desperately to earn money for my mother's treatment. I didn't want to go to my father because I only wanted to support Hellen and myself by my own efforts. I met Dylan in a coffee shop at that time, and with his sincere and passionate pursuit, I agreed to be his girlfriend.

But I didn't expect that my luck would be as bad as Hellen's.

Hellen would occasionally ask me about my father when she was sober. Every time I wanted to tell her how selfish her beloved man really was, but in the end, I gave up. I didn't want my mother, who was already lying in a hospital bed and living on this little fantasy, to wear out all the hope in her life.

I went to the bank and checked all my savings, and I had less than $30,000, and the cost of the surgery was ten times that amount.

I thought I'd give it a try, even if the family would mock me and abuse me. Because I couldn't watch Hellen die like this.

Hellen, don't worry. I would not let you leave me.

I stood at the door of Brown's cottage for a long time and hesitated, but finally made up my mind to ring the doorbell. The person who answered the door was a maid I hadn't seen before.

"I'm looking for Mr. Brown, please inform him."

"I know you, Miss Emily, please come in."

I never called that man my father outside. He cheated on my mother and irresponsibly got her pregnant with his child. He never acknowledged that I was his child. If his powerful wife hadn't dragged me to do a DNA test, he wouldn't even be willing to let anyone know Hellen's presence till now!

A scumbag like that didn't deserve to be in my life as a father.

"Sir, Miss Emily Jones is here."

"Mr. Brown, Mrs. Brown, good morning."

Bella Brown is the wife of Toby's father, Emma's real mother. Of noble birth, she was forceful and very disgusted with Hellen and me. She chose to ignore me whenever I ran into her, but I was glad I didn't have to deal with women like her.

Bella looked at me with a critical eye, my wretched appearance was all she could see, and even then she didn't show any pleasure, her eyes were still full of disgust.

"What are you doing here? Don't you know you're not welcome?"

I gritted my teeth and lowered my head to Bella's mocking words, bowing towards them in a respectful manner.

"My mother is sick. I beg you, could you lend me some money so that I can go and get treatment for my mother?"

In fact, I should not have asked Bella this question, she had such a great disgust for my mother that she would never agree to lend me money to save Hellen. But Toby did not have much authority in the family, only with Bella's approval, he dared to take action.

So I didn't dare to show any unpleasantness in front of Bella, if she didn't let me get up I can only keep standing bent over, I couldn't make her angry anyway.

Bella didn't say anything, and my father, who was sitting on the couch reading the newspaper, didn't let me get up, but I could feel their eyes falling on me. Bella was giving me a hard time.

I stayed in the bowing position until my back began to ache and I didn't dare to show a hint of resentment. My body started to get cold.

Finally, when I couldn't hold on any longer, Bella spoke up, "That bitch is sick? That's great news. I thought she was dead long ago."

She sneered and cursed my mother with the most vicious words. I couldn't help but straighten up and glare at her angrily. I could stand Bella rebuking me, but I couldn't stand her cursing my mother!

"What I hate the most is your face, you and your mother are both bitches and don't deserve to live in this world." Bella's eyes were filled with hatred, which made her beautiful face look slightly distorted.

She hated that my birth had given her husband an illegitimate daughter, and she hated my mother even more for stealing her husband. But what was Hellen's fault? She was also a victim, one who had paid a terrible price for her unconscious mistake.

"I won't lend you the money, I want you to watch your mother die in front of you. Now, get out and stay away from my house."

At this point in the conversation, I already understood that begging Bella to lend me the money to save Hellen was out of the question. I hoped he would remember his love for Hellen and lend me the money to save her, but he avoided my eyes.

When Bella saw that I had no intention of leaving, she stepped forward and grabbed my arm roughly. Toby was still sitting there as if he had nothing to do with what was going on.

I was pushed to the ground so hard by Bella that the pain from the hard ground brought tears to my eyes, but it was Toby's attitude towards us that caused me more pain!

"Don't let me see you again! Your mother, and you should not be in this world. It has been my greatest mercy to let you live until now, don't try to challenge my patience!"

"Bang!" The door was heavily slammed.

I got up from the ground with the pain. Looking at the villa door which was once again closed tightly, I didn't know what more I could do, let alone who else could help me, did I have to go to that man at last?
