Chapter 5

Lucas

Lucas was beyond excited when Kayla agreed that he could drive her home. He had felt blighted when she refused initially but then her mother called her to say she couldn't make it. It was like the universe was helping to get them together. She was the quiet type, Lucas thought as Kayla sat quietly in the passenger's seat close to him.

After she came down and thanked him, they both stared at each other for some time. It was like some sort of magnetic force was pulling them together but Lucas resisted. Not yet, he told himself. He still had to deal with the issue of her being a human. He still had to talk to his father, the Alpha, about her.

She was all he thought about as he drove home. His house was located in a community partially hidden in a groove and surrounded by trees.but not a lot of people knew that. By the time he drove to the end of the road leading out of Hillcity, there was usually no one going that direction.

He thought about Kayla as he drove through the familiar road and about his father and what he would say about all of it. He also thought about his half brother Derrick who had been a constant thorn in his flesh. He would sneer at him for sure. Derrick hated Lucas and he always had.

As Lucas arrived at "The groove" which was actually the name of their werewolf community, he couldn't help the anxiety that was squeezing at his chest. Even his wolf was feeling it too and it shifted uncomfortably inside of him. He was the next Alpha of the Lucent pack and his choice of a mate was almost as important as breath.

Lucas finally arrived home and after packing his car outside his father's gigantic white mansion, he walked into the great hall to meet his father. His father, Alpha Duke, was having a meeting with his Betas when Lucas walked in. Lucas bowed down to his father in greeting and Alpha duke signified for him to wait while he finished up. In a short while the meeting was over and the Alpha dismissed everyone. He signalled to Lucas to sit with him at the table. Lucas sat down and faced his father wondering where he was going to start from. He knew he had to start somewhere and soon as his father was a busy man.

"I met my mate today," Lucas said, his voice shaking. He watched his father's eyes light up with excitement.

"You don't say. It was about time anyway. I was already thinking of throwing a ball and inviting all the unmated young werewolf girls so you could find your mate. But I'm glad you found her already" Alpla Duke stroked his long beard thoughtfully and gave Lucas one of his very rare smiles. At 6.5, the Alpha was a bulky giant. He had golden brown hair like Lucas's and black eyes like Derrick's. He observed Lucas thoughtfully as if he could tell that there was more to his story.

"Who is she?" Alpha Duke asked

"She's...there's a little problem. She's human" Lucas said

Alpha Duke's face strengthened suddenly in surprise.

"A human...and you're sure she's your mate?" The Alpha pressed

"Yes. I've never experienced anything like it before. The moment i saw her, it was like the world stopped moving and i felt a rush of joy in my heart" Lucas said and then realising he was smiling, he quickly put up a serious face.

The Alpha started to chew the inside of his cheek and Lucas knew he was just as worried as he was. He did that when he was seriously thinking about something.

"She won't survive here. Not in a wolf's pack. Not as a Luna" His father said and looked at Lucas.

Lucas said nothing. He really did not know what to say.

"We have to fix this' ' Alpha duke said, giving Lucas a serious look. It took Lucas a while to realise what the Alpha was saying. When an Alpha wolf had been fated by the goddess, they couldn't take another mate unless their ordained mate should die by any means. Then and only then can the moon goddess fate him to someone else

"No" Lucas shook his head "I'm not going to kill her" he said, frowning

"You have to do what needs to be done. Having the heart to make and follow through with difficult decisions is what makes one a true Alpha" his father said. Lucas stared at his father in shock. How could it be so cruel? He wasn't going to kill an innocent girl just because he had been fated to her.

"I can't kill her" he said again to his father

The Alpha gave him a hard look, his eyes piercing right through him.

"It is such a shame that a man of my courage would have a sorry excuse of a son like you. You're dismissed" the alpha ended angrily. Lucas stood up and bowed a little before leaving his father's presence. It was unfair of his father to treat him the way he did. He had served the Alpha well. He had obeyed his every command. Until now. As Lucas was leaving the great hall, he saw a shadow move at the window by the left side of the hall. He wondered who it was but then realised it could only be one person.

As he walked outside, he could feel the shadow walking in the same direction he was. When he got outside, he saw Derrick come into view. He was sneering. He had hid himself at the window and listened to Lucas's conversation with the Alpha. His black eyes looked at Lucas with spite. Lucas made to move away.

"Hey wimp" Derrick said and Lucas stopped in his tracks. If you're too chicken to do it, i can do it for you" he said

Lucas turned to face him. He was fuming.

"If you lay one finger on her, I'm going to kill you," Lucas said.

Derrick laughed

"I see you must be ready to join your mother in hell" Derrick said

Lucas threw him a punch.
