Chapter 7

Kayla

Kayla could not stop thinking about Lucas after he dropped her home from school. She could not stop thinking of his beautiful green eyes and golden brown hair. Gosh, the guy was perfect. Maybe this city wasn't so bad afterall, she thought to herself. There was something so special about Lucas but she couldn't quite place her hands on it. He had the grace of a prince and the character of someone who knows that not everything needs to be said. There was something just so mysterious about him. Was it his air or just the way he looks at her like he held the secret of the universe in those perfect green eyes? And the scar in his face, Kayla couldn't just really get past it. She wanted to know how he got the scar.

Infact, she wanted to know everything about him and more. She was looking forward to seeing him in school the next day. She hoped he was still going to offer her a ride. She wouldn't think twice before saying yes. Maybe they could even sit together at lunch, Kayla thought but then remembered that she now had a new friend. Maybe Charlotte would sit with her at lunch the next day. In that case, it would be awkward to have Lucas sit with them as well. Charlotte would definitely feel uncomfortable. Kayla was sure she would like to sit with just her so they could get to know each other better.

But yet, Lucas was actually the main reason that Kayla was excited about going to school the following day. She did not expect that she would like school so fast. She had expected that she would be friendless and miserable for a while before she actually got to know anyone at the school. But things were happening so fast for her already. It was her first day at school and yet she had already met two people who she thought were really awesome. She has met Charlotte who may or may not become her best friend very soon, although she hopes that she does and also she had met Lucas, who was possibly the most handsome guy she had seen in the school so far. It was all just incredible and refreshing.

Kayla's parents soon came back from work and Kayle went downstairs to welcome them. Michel gave her a hug and Mac kissed her in her forehead

"So how was your first day at school?" Mitchel asked her as she moved into the living room and Kayla followed her.

"It was okay, I guess" Kayla said but her voice was hardly able to hide the excitement she was feeling from having met Charlotte and Lucas.

"Oohh" her mom said "you seem excited. You seem all flushed and happy like you've had a really swell day" Mitchel said, smiling

Kayla smiled as well

"Okay fine. I guess it was not as bad as I thought" she told Mitchel

"Glad to hear that" her dad, Mac, said and then proceeded to go upstairs to freshen up

Kayla followed her mom into the kitchen and helped her set down the things she had bought. They were still quite in the process of setting up the house and buying stuff that they might need. And so, whenever her parents went to work, they used the opportunity to get a few things when they were coming back. Today, Mitchel had gotten some vegetables, fruits and drinks and Natalie helped her arrange them into the fridge

"So" Mitchel said and Kayla knew what she was going to ask before she said it "have you made any friends yet" Mitchel asked just as Kayla had predicted

Kayla hesitated before she answered. She wondered if she should tell her mother about both Charlotte and Lucas or just about Charlotte. She didn't want her getting any ideas. And also, for some reason, she kind of felt like her encounter with Lucas should be kept a secret. It wasn't like it was a big deal or anything. After all, he had driven her home and all but she found that she didn't want to tell. Maybe because she was not so sure yet

"Yes" Kayla said, turning from the fridge to face Mitchel "I made a new friend. Her name is Charlotte and she's super nice" Kayla said

Mitchel clapped excitedly "oh honey, I'm so happy to hear that" she said and Kayla realized for the first time that her mom had actually being worried about the fact that she might not like her school and not make friends or that she might not like Hill city in general and would not be able to cope. She knew that her parents had actually been concerned about how their new life had affected her but she never knew her mom had been so worried. But seeing the look of relief on her face when Kayla told her that she had made a friend, Kayla could see that she had actually been more than just concerned for her.

After putting all of the stuff that she had bought away, Mitchel excused herself from the kitchen and went upstairs to her room. Kayla lingered in the kitchen for a while before she grabbed a strawberry juice from the fridge and also climbed up the stairs. She knew her mother would be down in a while to make dinner and herself and Mac would be down a little later to set the table and to eat but for now, she just went up the stairs to her own room. She took a drink of her strawberry juice the moment she entered the room and then she closed the door, flopped upon her bed and thought about Lucas and about school the following day. She was looking forward to it and it was kind of surprising how things could change so fast. Just this morning, she didn't want to go to the school at all and now she was all excited and pumped up. She couldn't wait to meet Lucas.
