Prologue
I've often heard people say that your brain records every second of your life from the second that you were born into this world. I believe in that saying.
It might be hard to believe but I faintly remember peeking through the gaps on the side of my sister's crib when she was a baby. I must've been 2 or 3 at the time. She was fast asleep, her fists covered in small mittens to keep her tiny hands warm. The cloth moved slightly as she clenched and unclenched her fists in her sleep. When she brought her fist to her mouth, I stopped it from doing so with a finger.
"No, baby Casey, dirty. You'll get sick." I whispered softly to the sleepy baby.
The small fingers inside the mittens moved as if trying to grip onto the finger that was holding her hands away from her mouth.
I held her small cladded hand between two fingers and she was somehow able to grip onto my thumb tightly, as if she it was her lifeline.
My heart melted at the feeling.
I shushed her lightly, stroking the back of her hand over the mittens with my other finger.
"Don't be scared, baby Casey. 哥哥 (big brother) is here."
I remembered being entranced by the sight. She was so small and vulnerable. I remembered thinking that she's the most beautiful being.
I guess that it's been that way from the very start. I was smitten by my baby sister and was wrapped around her tiny pinky the moment my parents brought her home.
My sister has always been my entire world and will continue to be for as long as I live. That was the vow I made to the world; to be her shield against the world and her rock against the harsh waves.
I'll protect her, always.
No one will ever hurt my little baby sister.
