Chapter 5

That voice could be none other than my best friend and full time asshole, Sam Valentino. That motherfucker was annoying. Could a girl ever got some peace? When she's surrounded by boys the answer is a hard 'no'. When I didn't respond and continued brushing my hair, Sam yelled again through the wooden door.

"Is there anyone else in there?"

I opened my mouth to respond when he barged in the door on his own, nearly scaring the crap out of me. I must have jumped four feet in the air before I glared at Sam. "What if there was someone in here?"

He shrugged lazily and crossed the room to fish a granola bar out of my duffle bag. "Then I get a show."

"What if I was naked?"

He shrugged and popped a piece into his mouth. "Then I get a show. You realize this makes me want to barge in more right?" He said like I was the stupidest person alive. Stupid of me to forget that my best friend was a raging hormonal teenage boy. Maybe 'boy' was the wrong word for that pile of muscle and testosterone; but you get the point.

"Why are you in such a rush?" I questioned while throwing my hairbrush into my open duffle a few feet away. The girls lacrosse teams didn't start practicing for months. The only year round sport at this school was Boys Lacrosse and only because the school was known for it. As a result, I had a locker room all to myself. Sam had been wrong about the whole locker room thing on day one, probably on purpose. Certain sports got certain locker rooms and I just got lucky.

"We're doing team bonding."

I felt a piece of granola hit my cheek and I turned to face Sam who was now sitting against the wall. It hit the concrete floor and Sam sent me a disgusted look.

"You are supposed to catch it in your mouth."

"A little heads up would be nice next time." I scoffed and pulled my bag over my shoulder. "What exactly does team bonding entail? Dinner or something?" My old team just had dinner once a week. We didn't really have team bonding because we were a small school and most of us were already friends. I'm guessing it was a bigger ordeal here.

Sam pushed himself off of the wall and ate the rest of the bar in one bite. He grabbed my black back pack and slung it over his shoulder while I grabbed my stick. "Usually it's at someone's house but it's still nice out so we are going to go to the beach and order pizza."

I was not in the mood for team bonding but it was a Friday night so I couldn't use homework as an excuse. It had been a few days since our first practice and the last few had gone a lot smoother. It was only natural that I would be forced to do something I didn't want to by now. Life co always be sunshine and roses. (Insert eye roll).

"I don't have a bathing suit." I stated plainly as Sam pushed open the locker room door and lead me through the gym and into the parking lot. That excuse probably wouldn't work. I noticed two figures leaning against my black Jeep as we made our way across the vacant parking lot. As we got closer I realized it was Chris and Finn.

"Where's the girlfriend?!" I called out between two cupped hands. "I always liked her better!"

Chris turned to look at me and Finn put his sunglasses on his head. Sam laughed a little besides me when we came to a stop in front of my car.

"Sorry, princess. She's busy visiting her father. Besides, this is a team event." Chris replied with a small amused smile.

My eyes drifted to the bags and sticks on the ground and I furrowed my browns in confusion before looking up. "What's going on here?"

"I thought you were smart?" Sam teased and grabbed my keys from my left hand and unlocked my car.

"You got a Jeep, Mason. We're going to the beach and you're driving." Finn pushed off the grill of my car and moved to put the gear bags, sticks and backpacks in the trunk with Sam.

I wasn't going to argue. I had to go to the beach anyway, might as well drag these suckers along. "Fine. But we need to go to my house first. I need my bathing suit."

"That's cool with us, Mason." Finn replied while shutting my trunk. Chris and Sam climbed into the back leaving the passenger seat for Finn. I stepped up into my car and started the engine.

"Nice mansion, Mason." Sam said as we climbed out of my Jeep in my driveway. It wasn't a mansion. It was just sizeable. Marlin Drive was one of the nicer streets near the water in Groton. We weren't rich in the grand scheme of things, but my dead mothers inheritance in combination with my dads salary was defiantly a lot.

I ignored the remark and unlocked my front door as the slamming of car doors echoed behind me. I dropped my bags next to the door in the foyer and the three boys entered my home, shutting the wooden door behind them.

"Fell free to get some food or something. I'll be down in a minute." I said without much interest. I marched up the stairs and shut my bedroom door. I quickly pulled out a black Triangl bikini and slipped it on my body.

After a moment of searching, I found my maroon silk high waisted shorts and a plain black crop top to show of the shorts and my waistline. There was a knock at my door and I opened it to view Finn leaning on one forearm against the doorway. I raised an eyebrow at him but he was focused on my room.

"Dead Kennedys?" He raised an eyebrow and I turned my head to the framed SupremeXDead Kennedys T-shirt hanging above my desk, next to signed Syracuse lacrosse jerseys on both sides.

"Got a problem with Jello Biafra?" I asked while slipping on my plain black flip flops.

"No." He paused and sent me a smirk. "Although the T-shirt is probably a better choice than the Penis Landscape."

A slow smile worked it's way onto my face. Only hard core fans would know that reference now a days. "What about the Sex Pistols?" I asked crossing my arms and leaning back slightly onto my desk.

"You know, Mason? I think you just became slightly more bareble." He paused for a moment before standing from the doorway. "Do you have a soccer ball or something we could bring? Jameson is brining a volleyball and Luke is bringing cornhole. I'm 90% sure Jake is supplying the beer."

I stood from by desk and grabbed my phone off my white dresser. "Yeah. I got a soccer ball and spikeball in my garage. Help me get it?"

"Sure." I pushed past him but I still felt his warmth as we descended the stairs. I led him past the kitchen and into my three car garage. "What do your parents do for a living, again?" He asked, casually looking around as I tossed him the soccer ball.

"Mom was a chef. She's dead now. Dad's a CFO. My mom just had an inheritance. What about you?" I said casually. I never thought telling people that my mother had passed was a big deal. Of course I missed her and I loved her, but I couldn't feel bad about what I didn't have anymore.

Finn must not have expected that because he stood frozen with his hands on the soccer ball for a moment. Eventually he spoke up. "Sorry. I wasn't expecting that." He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. "I'm sorry for your loss. My dad's a lawyer. My mom's a Lawyer too but she's not in Connecticut anymore."

"It's fine. I miss her of course, but I try not to harp on things I can't fix. What about your mom? Why'd she leave?" My words might seem harsh but they were quiet and gentle.

He met my eyes again and shrugged. "Divorce two years ago." Finn shrugged. Whether it was more for him or me, I wasn't sure. I finished grabbing the spikeball set and left the garage. The sun hit my skin and I knew it was a perfect beach day.

Chris and Sam were already sitting in the back of my car with the windows rolled down and aviators on their heads. I almost rolled my eyes. Talk about clich茅.

I put the game in my trunk and Finn chucked the soccer ball at Sam who deflected it perfectly without even looking at it. I guess there's a reason he's one of the best goalies in the state.

We slammed the car door shut and I started the car. "What beach are we going to?" I raised an eyebrow slightly at Finn while plugging my phone into the aux cord.

Finn plucked my unlocked phone from my hands and opened my iTunes app. "Esker Point."

I rolled my eyes at him and backed out of my driveway. "You know there's this thing called boundaries. Especially for people who hate each other. The phone thing is defiantly a boundary-" I was cut off by the music choice he chose.

"I'm tired of self respect. I can't afford a car. I want to be a prefab super star." He sang while giving me a look that shut me up. "What was that you were saying earlier?" He mocked and went back to singing the lyrics to Pull My Strings.

Finn had a nice voice that I didn't expect to translate in his singing, but let me tell you it did. His voice was deep and smooth. It wasn't deep like a country singer; it was a middle ground that fit well with the punk rock song.

"What the fuck is this shit?" Sam complained from the seat behind me. I heard Chris groan in agreement.

I smirked a little seeing Finn turn in his seat and point an accusing finger at both of them. "Shut the fuck up. This is art." He said before sitting back down and singing again.

I bit the corner of my lower lip and smiled a little before joining in. "But there's just one problem. Is my cock big enough? Is my brain small enough? For you to make me a star." We both sang while laughing at Chris's face in the rear view mirror.

The beach wasn't far from my house so we nearly got to finish the song by the time we arrived. I pulled up next to a space grey Ram truck and a black Lexus. Damn these rich people. I saw two guys from the team, Aiden and Jameson getting out of the Lexus as Sam opened the door and flailed on the ground while kissing it.

I furrowed my brows at him as shared a look with Finn and Chris as we watched him. Is Sam on something?

"Oh my fucking god! I never want you two to be friends ever!" He moaned in agony while pointing at Finn and I. He got off the pavement and Jameson shared the same confused look as us.

"My ears are dead because of those two. I have never been more grateful that those two are not in charge of the workout playlist. My ears have been murdered." He complained. Sam put his hands on my shoulders and shook me lightly. "Murdered, I tell you!"

Chris smacked him in the back of the head lightly. "You idiot." He laughed. Sam let go of me and tried to hit Chris back but he was already running from the parking lot and onto the sand. It was oddly empty for a Friday, but I wasn't complaining. Probably because it was around 6pm by now. Practice lasted longer than usual which worked out in the end because all the people were gone for dinner.

We watched Sam and Chris chase each other around before Jameson chimed in. "Biased on that reaction; I say the next time we need a new workout playlist, you two are defiantly off the list." He laughed and Aiden tossed me the soccer ball from my trunk.

"You guys are just mean." I pouted playfully and Jameson smirked.

"Nah. We're the defenders of ears."

"Please. Like your taste is any better." Finn snorted. "Pop is not better than rock. Cats out of the bag dude. We all know you sing Taylor Swift." He joked and Jameson smiled while brushing it off.

"Excuse me if I'd rather hear a female voice as opposed to a screaming man when I'm trying to relax." Jameson said while pretending to flip his hair like a girl. I snorted out a laugh. This team was too much sometimes.

I was about to make a comment about how it wasn't screaming when Aiden called out from the path to the sand. "Will you three stop talking about a threesome and get over here?!"聽 My eyes bulged as a few people turned and looked at us. I could feel the heat creeping into my cheeks. Finn and Jameson just laughed at me and highfived.

"I'm going to kill'm." I muttered and charged towards Aiden. He turned and started running to the beach while screaming.

These idiots would be the death of me.
