Chapter two

ONE YEAR LATER

KACEY POV

I woke up really excited because it was my birthday today but I hated the fact that my sister always pretended like she was the only one special on this day. I had a feeling that she was fond of overshadowing me. She has been doing it for years and I had a feeling that she was going to do it again this year.

I got out of bed and rushed to the living room with excitement hoping to find one of my father's surprises but when I reached there nothing was arranged and the place wasn't even decorated. This was definitely unlike him.

I went upstairs to check up on him but all the rooms were empty and all his belongings were gone. It was like he had just simply vanished into thin air. I pushed the negative thoughts away and rushed to the bakery as my last hope but when I arrived there I found my mother crying like someone had passed away.

"Mother."

She looked up and when she saw me she sobbed even harder like I was the cause of the problem.

"He's gone, your father is gone and he took your sister with him."

"Gone where?"

I looked at the piece of paper beside her and decided to pick it up and I found out that it was a letter from my father that I thought was addressed to my mother but it was meant for me.

"DEAR Kacey, today is your 9th birthday and I wanted to surprise you with a surprise party like every other year along with your sister but this year I didn't do any of that because I had to leave this house forever."

I looked at my mother and continued reading the letter.

"IT might come as a shock but you wouldn't understand the reason for my actions because you're just a child but I am not leaving alone because I chose to take your sister with me. It's time I made up for the mistakes I've committed."

"You and Stacey don't deserve to have a lousy father like me and I never wanted you to find out the truth this way Kacey but I am not your biological father you adopted both you and Stacey."

"But I can't stay because of the many mistakes I've committed and it's just hard to live with that kind of guilt anymore. I won't be gone forever because one day I will find you Kacey and you will hear the truth from me."

The letter came to an end just like that and I stood there in shock trying to ignore the pain I suddenly felt inside.

He had abandoned me and my mother like we meant nothing to him.

"Kacey are you alright?"

I looked outside the window and it was raining heavily outside.

"He is going to come back. He always does. I'm sure that this is one of his pranks."

I grabbed a chair from the bakery and placed it near the window. My father was going to come back there. There was no reason he would just leave like that.

AMBER POV

What I feared the most had finally happened the day Lucas would finally snap and decide to leave this house for good because of the guilt.

It's been thirteen years since Luca's disappearance and Kacey has been coming back to the same spot again hoping that one day Lucas would come back but he never did and I lost hope.

I sat beside Kacey and handed her a cup of tea.

"I don't feel like drinking tea."

I placed the cup of tea on the table.

"You do realize that your father is never coming back right?"

Kacey didn't answer me.

"You've been this way for thirteen years and I think that you need to see a shrink before it gets worse honey."

"I am perfectly fine mother. I don't need to see any shrink besides it's just a waste of money."

"You could use that money to fix some things around the bakery instead of just wasting it on me."

"You are more important to me than the bakery Kacey, you're the one I have in this world and I care about your mental being."

"You refuse to accept it but your father is a coward and you walked out on us without even sparing a single glance of remorse."

Kacey looked back at me.

"He only left because of the secret you're hiding from me. I know that one day he's going to come back to tell me that secret himself."

I sighed deeply.

"I came to tell you that we have to move out of this house. The expenses have risen up and the bakery isn't enough to cater those expenses."

"We can't move out mother, what if dad comes back and finds that we are gone?"

"We are moving out tomorrow Kacey and your father is never coming back. It's time you finally accept the bitter truth."

The next morning we moved out of the house and found ourselves living in a small apartment. It was small but very functional. At least we had a roof over our heads. It was better than nothing. I could tell that Kacey wasn't happy about the move but we didn't have any other choice because I could no longer afford to pay the bills for our previous house.

KACEY POV

Maybe my mother was right. It was finally time to accept that my father was never going to come back. If he really loved me he would have made an effort to communicate with me.

My mother placed an envelope on the table.

"What's this?" I asked curiously while holding the letter in my hand.

"It's a letter from Venus university for the gifted and it's addressed to you."

"Do you think that I wasn't accepted?"

"With that impressive GPA of yours I suggest that you think positively."

"I don't want to open it."

"Can I open it for you?"

I nodded quietly and gave the letter to my mother.

A few seconds later she opened it and read the letter that would determine my future.

"What does it say?"

"You got accepted!"
