Chapter four

ELIJAH POV

Kacey and I have been friends ever since we were little kids but I was hiding a secret from her that threatened to ruin our friendship if she ever had to find out. It's been years and I still can't get her out of my mind. I am in love with my best friend.

FLASHBACK

"You look even more upset today, did you have a fight with your mother again?" I asked curiously while still looked furious.

"No it's nothing like that. I'm just really angry but you wouldn't understand."

"Okay I guess you have a point if I was really your best friend like you claim then I would have understood."

Kacey grasped my hand gently and our eyes locked intensely.

"Hey that's not what I meant Elijah but right now my life is more complicated than ever I wish I could tell everything but I can't and I'm sorry."

I nodded quietly.

"It's alright Kacey I won't force you to say something you don't want to say but just remember one thing."

She cocked a brow while we continued walking.

"That I'll always be there for you in bad and good times."

She wrapped her arms around me, hugging me.

"You're a good friend Elijah."

I smiled to myself.

"Yeah friend."

I pulled away from her.

"Speaking of friendship, I know that you don't want to go to prom so I wanted to suggest something."

Kacey crossed her arms over her chest.

"And what's that?"

"Well I don't have a date and you also don't have one. I was thinking that we could go to prom together as friends."

Kacey burst out laughing.

When I didn't laugh along with her she stopped laughing and maintained a poker face.

"Oh gosh you're serious?"

I nodded quietly.

"Elijah I think you deserve to go to prom with the girl you like and not your best friend."

"What if you're the girl I like?"

Kacey looked conflicted.

"That's not very funny but I mean it Elijah you should go with someone who you like you're only asking me this because you feel sorry for me."

"That's where you're wrong Kacey. I don't feel sorry for you and I also won't take no for an answer. I'll come pick you up around 8pm."

Maybe it was the way she constantly looked at me and smiled but I knew one thing for sure: I was helplessly in love with my best friend and she had no clue.

Later that night I wore my most expensive suit and shoes. I looked in the mirror feeling impressed with myself. It was time to go pick up Kacey.

Twenty minutes later I arrived at her house and stepped out of the car before I could knock on the door her mother Amber opened it.

"Elijah, you look very nice tonight."

I smiled at her.

"Thank you ma'am."

"Kacey has curfew please bring her back before midnight."

I nodded quietly.

"I will."

"And take care of my daughter."

" Kacey is my Best friend and I won't let anything happen to her."

Just then Kacey emerged from her room wearing a blue dress that clung to her body like a second skin. I couldn't take my eyes off her and something was different about her.

It was like she was a completely different person.

I was speechless. All I could was watch her walk in that beautiful dress and her perfume lingered in the room.

Kacey blushed a little when she saw me.

"Well aren't you going to say anything?"

"You look beautiful tonight just like every other night when I see you."

"Thank you."

Her mother took a photo of us and bid us goodbye while I drove Kacey to prom. An hour later we arrived just in time and the moment we walked in people couldn't stop staring at us. I know that Kacey hated being the center of attention and that's why she didn't want to come here in the first place.

She was about to walk away but I held her hand.

"Stay…"

She looked around the room looking nervous.

"Would you like to dance with me?"

A smile curved her lips.

She placed her hand in mine.

"Though I must warn you I'm not a very good dancer."

"Hmm that's interesting. I was about to tell you the same thing."

We danced together for a while and went outside to the garden. Most of our classmates were inside enjoying the party.

"So how do you like it so far?" I finally asked.

"Well I guess prom isn't that bad. I thought it was going to be a complete nightmare but it wasn't. I actually had a good time so thank you for bringing me here."

"You're welcome."

There was an awkward silence between us.

"What are you doing?"

I cocked a brow at her.

"What do you mean?"

"You're staring at me with that look."

"What look?"

"Like you like me, not just as a friend."

" I just think that you look very beautiful tonight."

"I bet you say that to all the girls you go out with Elijah."

"That's not true."

"Dance with me. I know that this is your favorite song."

I offered her my hand and she grasped it slowly.

She placed her arms around my neck while I held her by the waist as we swayed to the music.

We couldn't take her eyes off each other and I found myself slowly leaning towards her.

"Elijah what are you…" Kacey trilled off while I cupped one of her cheeks and crushed my lips on hers.

PRESENT DAY

That night I remember that Kacey ran away from me and she didn't want to ever talk to me again because she didn't want things to change between us but it was already too late because even today I was still madly in love with her but she had no clue.

I never wanted to express my feelings to her because I didn't want to lose Kacey as a friend so I kept them buried inside but our first kiss is a moment I'll always cherish forever.

KACEY POV

I was going to be leaving for university today with Elijah. We were both excited to start this journey together. My suitcase was already packed and I was ready to go. I went downstairs with my luggage and met my mother in the kitchen.

"You're seriously going to leave dressed like that?"

I looked at my clothes and they seemed pretty fine to me.

"This is what I usually wear everyday."

"A pair of jeans and checked t-shirt paired off with sneakers."

My mother shook her head negatively.

"You are such a dreadful tomboy, why can't you wear some of the pretty dresses I bought you?"

"Mother you know that I'm not fond of dresses but just to make you happy I packed them in case of a special occasion."

She smiled at me.

"I'm glad to hear that."

She looked really sad.

"What's wrong?"

"I can't believe that you're finally leaving for university. My little girl is finally all grown up."

"Mother, you know that I'm not leaving forever, I'll be back."

She wiped her tears away.

"I know that you'll come back honey you always do."

Just then a car began honking outside.

"It sounds like Elijah is here to pick you up."

I nodded quietly.

"Yeah."

I hugged my mother tightly.

"I'll miss you and your lectures."

She tightened her grip and cried tearfully.

"I'll miss you too baby."

She helped me take my luggage outside while Elijah loaded them inside the car.

"Take good care of yourself."

" I will."

"Don't forget me."

My mother gave me a peck on the forehead.

" I will never forget my own daughter and please call me when you arrive."

She handed me a box that was carefully wrapped.

"I want you to open this when you arrive."

"What is it?"

"You'll find out for yourself."

I hugged her one last time and left with Elijah. Once we were on the road he broke the silence between us by playing some music.

"How does it feel to be far away from home?"

"It sucks and I hate leaving my mother behind."

He placed his hand on top of mine.

"I'm sure that your mother is very proud of you and she loves you unconditionally."

"I want you to have a good time so stop sulking and looking sad. This is supposed to be a happy day."

"I know."

I wonder what plans this university has in store for me.
