Chapter 3

“Huh?” Bethany was taken aback by what Kevin suddenly revealed to her. She was not expecting, out of all people, Kevin would be the one who would be her superior starting on this day onwards. She was frozen in her spot for a solid five seconds, staring at the innocent eyes and smile of the man in front of her. “What do you mean by that?”

“It is just like what I have said to you,” he answered her calmly and the charisma from his voice is showing to Bethany. “I will be the boss of this company from now on. I managed to buy this company from your former boss who left just now.”

“So, that day where I saw you again, you were already –”

“Yes,” he nodded, affirming her observation. “I was already making arrangements on that day.”

Bethany chuckled, staring at nothingness, and blinking for a few moments before speaking. “Who would have thought that Kevin the naughty kid is now a billionaire and being my boss?”

The man put a hand on the back of his head and started scratching his head. “Don’t call me that anymore, I am a changed man already.”

“I bet you do.”

They exchanged a peal of light laughter and Bethany heard a set of footsteps coming their way. The footsteps were loud, so Kevin turned around and they saw a woman wearing a green dress and eyeglasses. At the corner of her eye, she saw the man’s eyes twinkle as she saw the woman and immediately gave her a hug and a peck on the lips.

Bethany was left with surprise and had her mouth gaping at the scene that she had just seen.

“Bethany, I want you to meet my girlfriend and fiancée Gwen Levin, she works here as one of the directors,” Kevin said as she introduced the woman to Bethany and the woman extended out a hand to her. “And Gwen, meet my former classmate, Bethany Waters.”

Bethany had no other second thoughts and she accepted the hand of the woman and shook it; they exchanged a smile and immediately retracted their hands from each other.

Fake smiles. Bethany knows more about it than anyone. She is the only one who perfected the said act and even made fools of their clients countless times, as she would like to think of herself that way.

“It is time to make yourself known to the board and the employees,” Gwen said to her, shifting her body to his direction and giving Bethany a quick glance in the eyes. As if she did not notice her gawking at her.

“Yeah, I forgot about that one,” Kevin replied to the fiancée and looked at Bethany with a smile, waving at her. “See you around, Bethany. I will be going now to see the employees.”

“Sure,” she said and greeted him goodbye and almost walked out of the two of them as fast as she could. But before she could even take a step, Kevin immediately stopped her, and Bethany took a deep breath before turning around, gracefully smiling at them. “What is it?”

“I heard that you are my secretary,” he pointed in her direction. “Is that true?”

She first took a glance at Gwen waiting for an answer then back to him, nodding innocently and snapping his fingers. Kevin turned to Gwen and whispered something to her, making her take some steps away and looked at both of them and took her exit.

“What did you say to her?”

“Ah, I said that I should be with my secretary, and we will have our time alone later,” Kevin answered her question and got a tablet out from his bag and gave it to Bethany. “You know, even if we are already a couple for a few years, we should still be able to properly get off to work and act as a couple and everything.”

She sighed and got the tablet, sighing and shaking her head. “Tell me about it.”

The familiar icons on the screen. The light of the tablet adjusted to her sight. The movement of her fingers as if thinking is already not a requirement. Bethany has been working as a secretary for seven years already, and she has witnessed three takeovers of the company to keep it from falling. Kevin, her third boss, is the third man that she will be serving to start today.

“You sure do know how to operate that kind of thing,” Kevin commented on her working, startled, and hiding the tablet from him, leaving him surprised.

“Sorry,” she immediately apologized and got back to her work. “I am just not used to having my bosses going through me in the middle of my work. I am still adjusting your schedule for today.”

“Ah! All right, all right,” he said to her, chuckling and stepping backward. “Sorry to disturb you on your work, Bethany.”

They stepped inside an empty elevator and Kevin pressed the key to the third floor. There was not even initiation of conversation that happened between them. Bethany then remembered what he said to her earlier and she could already deduce what kind of person is Kevin today compared to before.

He is already a person who knows how to be professional, and she should treat her as a superior and not as a former colleague, let alone her former classmate that she used to like.

The elevator made a ding sound, and they were immediately greeted by the press and the eyes of the employees, focusing on Kevin. While focusing on her work as his secretary, she took a glance at her boss and was immediately amazed by his poise and calmness while the lights were flashing at him.

If all eyes were on her as part of the so-called limelight, she would have been terrified and not even want to be there anymore.

But staring at her boss only took her so long and she just walked off, advancing to the side of the stage where she would wait until the whole introduction was over. The whole reason for the introduction ceremony is that they are working in an entertainment company, where every move that a big boss is making is a piece of news to the public just like the stars that they are creating and getting out there to create art and get them their revenues.

It took him quite a while before Bethany started to tap on her tablet and play with the muscles on her face, moving her lips from left to right. She then felt someone’s presence at the back, and she turned in her left direction, behind the stage, and just witnessed someone move away from her sight.

She raised an eyebrow and tried to approach it, slowly and cautiously. When she was already extending her hand and finding out who it was, another tapped on her shoulder and there was Kevin, slightly sweating on his forehead.

“That took quite a while,” he said to her, chuckling and feeling a little annoyed that the cameras are still not ceasing from clicking their flashes. “Sorry for the wait, I will start this… unique ceremony in your company.”

“Okay,” she said dryly and watched as the new boss emerged onto the stage. Her mind is still not shaking the thought of someone looking at her, making her feel warier than before.
