Chapter 2

VALERIE

As I walked out of the firm's building, I could not believe Mr. Denly had just stated I would work personally for the top boss of the LA Empire.

I reminisced about g conversations we had in the office while taking a slow walk to the bus stop.

“I will have you know that Jason detests lateness as he is a very punctual person. Try to be at work as early as you can tomorrow morning. I will also do my best to ensure that all the papers needed for your work would be available in your office which is right beside his.”

He said, Jason. I was fucking going to work with Jason, the genius lawyer who at age twenty-eight already had the biggest firm anyone could ever imagine.

Immediately, I felt very insufficient. “Are you sure I can do that? I mean, I am only an intern.”

“We would only know for sure when you start. For now, neither of us can ascertain that you would be able to handle it.” That man was kind in his words. “However, I have this conviction that it is something you can take on, Valerie.”

My eyes stung at the vote of confidence and I nodded, even though I was not convinced deep within me.

“Thank you. I would be sure to give it my best shot.”

“Hmm. You can go now and rest up for your big day tomorrow. It is surely going to be a long one.” He gave me a warm smile.

I nodded and managed to mumble my gratitude before leaving. So, here I was waiting at the bus stop and wondering if I could do this.

I mean, Jason Ford was the top boss. If I blew this, my chances of being an employee in the firm would be blown too. I imagined applying for jobs and my internship certificate is requested and I have a C or D, or even an F from the firm. It would be game over.

The bus soon arrived and I clambered on. My subconscious reminded me to look on the bright side. If I did well, not only would I climb the social and work status in Los Angeles, but I would also be accepted anywhere, home and abroad.

I quickly find my cell phone, my dad's.

“Daddy! You can’t believe what just happened to your princess.” I shrieked delightfully while checking my phone to check if he had forwarded the money for the apartment.

Even though ñn he had not, I would be somewhere nearby tonight; and then after my real first day at work today, I would find a way around being homeless.

“What got my princess this excited?” He asked excitedly with his signature chuckle.

I went ahead to explain the whole situation to him, from when I was disappointed that I got a lower work than I expected to be super excited that I got a nice one in the firm.

"I would be working with the top boss, Dad," I shrilled, attracting stares from passengers all around me. I could not care less.

Dad had all my emotions mirrored. “I always tell you that you, my princess are special but you would never believe me. Now take a look at all these good things coming your way.”

“Do not start with your drama, Dad," I giggled. "All fathers say their child is special. And we all know that is a lie."

My father laughed hard. "It is your duty, as my daughter, to believe it. Whether you think it is true or not. Plus, you always have a way of belittling yourself."

"Alright, Mr. Taylor. You win. By the way, I still have to move since I have to be close to work.” I said.

“I already sent you the payment for your apartment. You can share with Cole or Stella, so it is not just you living there. Stay safe, princess.” He hung up before I could argue.

As soon as the call ended, I called Cole to confirm that he was around. Cole could not move in with me since he already made payment for his apartment, and Stella was not sure about coming here for the six months of free time she had since she was a year below us.

I then busied myself with searching for apartments. I realized that it was probably a bad idea to get my stuff first before checking the apartment. From the look of things though, I would have to just check into some hotel to sleep in, so by the weekend, I would move to my apartment.

I could not, however, tell that my dad he would be too worried to stay put.

Cole was waiting for me as soon as I got to the front of his building. We had been best friends since our first year in college and I really can’t imagine my college life without him.

While I was the serious and nerdy type, he was the typical outgoing boy that everyone in school loved and knew. But when he got back home to the apartment we used to share with Stella, he studied just as hard as me.

He was currently doing his internship in a company around here. In as much as it was not a unicorn company like my firm, it was good enough. His major was management and he had insisted several times that he could intern anywhere. I mentally rolled my eyes at those words of his.

“I am glad you did not listen to my advice of unpacking,” he said with a chuckle, as he gestured at the bags that he had packed out for me.

“I am glad too. Thank you, Cole, for helping me out these past few days.” I expressed my deepest appreciation.

He squished me in a hug. "Come on, Val. What are friends for?" He kissed my hair and let me go.

Since we were pressed for time, we did not bother to make small talk and I booked a taxi immediately. As soon as we bid our goodbyes, I left for a hotel I had booked which was a fifteen minutes walk from the firm.

Getting my key card from the lobby, I settled in and called it a night.
