Chapter 6

"You are welcome," Kayden said.

No one said anything, Valerie's legs seemed rooted to the ground, it was so hard that talking about it was even the worse.

Without another word, she swirled on her heels, pushed the door open, and walked out of the room, she was walking, and then, it seemed like she was running, her heartbeat was increasing, there isn't much that goes along with her being there.

She held her breath warmly, it was aching, and the fact that she walked her legs shaking made it even tricky to accentuate such things. She made it up to the restroom at the hospital, changed her clothes, and then, moved to a warmer part of the building where a rack was built.

It had stopped raining now, and the sun was overhead which was making the day a warm one.

She knew who he was, she was going to either work with him or run away like never before. It has never been this intimidating, she has to see the man every day, nothing even could beat that.

Okay, she was going to be a lawyer, and graduate from a prestigious university back at home, but before that, she has to master her field of studies, it wasn't like she was going to act up like a pro or a nurse on the rescue, that was just a mild technique he was using to acquire some skills, nothing was as great as this right now.

"Valerie?" the voice called out from behind and the young lady was jolted out of his thoughts.

She turned around to see her cousin, smiling down at her.

He was on duty, he had a lab jacket on, and his face shone brightly, with several emotions sprawled across his face. He looked exhausted.

"How is my favorite cousin doing?" the was question fell out of his mouth in a small dancing way.

She flinched, then flashed him that sweet toothy smile that she was always ready to pull out.

"I am feeling cold, yeah, I was drenched in rain this morning. I need a car," she concluded, fluttering out the words.

He was two years older than her, he was that big brother he didn't have, and so far, she was grateful that it happened that way. She took deep breaths and released them gently, it was that controlling, but what more could she do when the slightest things only served in making her health condition deteriorate.

"I have something to let you know, babe," he said smoothly.

The young lady's face brightened as she scrounge up as if it could be this way. No matter what is going on, he just stressed her face for a while, it wasn't coming, he needed to tease her.

"Shoot!" she said warmly.

She was been serious, and that is what adulthood is all about, being too serious than it is necessary. When she saw him smiling, she wondered what he had to share with her.

"Hey! don't be a nerd, it is nothing to worry about, just want to take you out for lunch," he said warmly.

Valerie knew he was a good person, he wanted to make her feel comfortable in town, he knew she didn't have many friends but with time, she will adapt and make it warm for as long as he wants it.

"It is alright, it's noon already, huh? I don't even know how this bloody day just succeeded in slipping by so fast, it is not funny," she said complaining.

The young man saw the pain in her eyes, he just hooked his hand over her shoulders and forced her to walk with him.

"Come on now, let us go," he said politely.

That was the coolest this he could say, if someone was going to bring light to the woman's heart, it is going to be him.

It has not been long since she lost her parents, she was trying to catch her balance in life, and this was just a fresh start for her.

She let the young man pull her away in a small way, which wasn't pleasant, but to an extent, she felt the warmth and she let out a rasped breath from within her mouth.

Kayden had a surgery booked at one o'clock that afternoon, it is going to be a seven hours brain surgery, he barely has time for himself, and he wants to really stick to such awesome stuff, and it was like a small misled match.

He took a deep breath and released it lightly as he walked into the local deli at the roadside. He had changed into his working outfit and the first that it was blue and almost the same as what he had offered to Valerie made him very outstanding.

Stopping at the counter, he ordered.

"A peanut butter sandwich, please. Also a cup of coffee," he passed his command.

Turning around, he spotted her sitting alone at the rear end of the room.

Valerie had been chewing lightly on her burger, she didn't always have the big appetite, but today, she was just being a foodie, hungry as charged, but she still had her manners in check. He had excused himself to take a call, thus, she was there with her iced tea before her, sipping it occasionally.

She saw shadows from the corner of her eyes, and when they settled down, she didn't bother looking at the person because she knew who it was already. She started a random discussion.

"So then, I will need some help in my apartment..." she said looking up from her phone for the first time to actually notice who was it.

'Kayden' she gasped her eyes widening.

She hadn't realized until now that he was sitting before her. Her face became pale as if she has seen death. Well, she hasn't and it was far from that reality.

"Go on, just act like I was there. And tell me what you were going to say to him," he said warmly.

That was awkward, her face heated up with so many emotions embedded in it. She blushed and was glad her iced tea was still in her hand, thus, she pretended to be sipping it.

It didn't make it better, the heat that covered her face is one that she had never experienced before, she wished she could disappear.

"Oh damn! Kayden, how on earth did you get here?" she asked throwing her head behind.

That was awkward, she felt the muscles around her jaws clench, it was really intimidating, this is one thing that has not happened before, her eyes were firm.

"I am sorry if I startled you, it was not my intention to do so," the young man said warmly apologizing.

He had a bite from his sandwich in a lazy manner, it was frustrating, but what more can he do. Chewing every bit of his food, he swallowed it.

"You don't have to apologize, Kayden, it is just a small thing," she said.

She felt very silly saying these things, it should never have been like this, no matter what she is going through, she closed her eyes for a while, not wanting to be this way.

They held their breaths tightly, it was just so crazy how she felt it that way.

"Hey, don't call me Kayden," the young man said warmly.

It was the smartest thing he could ever have done to himself, he creased his face, and made a slow ragged sound and it made it so frustrating.

"Whatever," Valerie spat out beneath her breath.

He gave her that shot stop look, but didn't say anything else he wasn't going to have an argument with her.

"We need to talk," he announced heaving a gentle sigh.

There is nothing that they could talk about, rather, she felt the pressure strangle her, it was how aching that could be, and to think that the highlighted the ache in her back, it couldn't be this bad, yet, he brushed this aside not wanting it to be much of a burden to her.

"Does it have anything to do with my internship here at the hospital?" she asked her eyes fierce as she looked at the man.

There was something about his new him that he couldn't just figure out, she didn't care, but it was soon turning into a budding feeling, one that he couldn't as much as characterize, even when he wanted to.

He inhaled deeply, after a while, he pushed out the breath from his pursed lips and as that happened he spoke in the warmest of voice.

It shook her to the core and it made her sniffle lightly, nothing was as crazy as what he felt that way, she just closed her eyes in the meantime, allowing the fear to sweep through him. It had never been this crazy before, nothing compared him to what she was facing and as her eyes were warm, they braced his own and she was awaiting a reply from him.
