CHAPTER 5: Blade

ALICIA

“Dad, do you believe in vampires?”

We were eating when I asked my father about vampires. He was drinking the water, making him cough with my question, as it was not usual for a human to ask about blood-sucking creatures that only exist in movies.

I saw the sudden changes in Dad’s face like I hit something that I shouldn’t be. I don’t know why I am even asking them. But, who should I ask about this? I cannot just ask anyone about vampires because I felt like it would sound crazy especially if I tell them vampires are real.

They are real as far as my memories serve me. It sounded like I have woken up from a dream, but no…I know that everything Akihiro did was real except for the sex that I don’t want to remember ever again. He’s a pervert! But, of course, I will never tell him that I remember it. Not now, I am still gathering evidences about it as it might be stupid of me to announce I know his secret.

“Why did you suddenly ask?” Dad asked when he had already recovered. “Is that the reason why you didn’t come home yesterday? Your clubmate, Risa, told us that you were doing some film about vampires.”

I nodded although I wanted to tell them the real reason, such as there are no Risa among our club members and it was all Akihiro’s plan. But, if I did. Then, it would put them into harm. Surely, Akihiro would do something not to me but to my closest family if he knew that his magic didn’t work on me. I am not sure how to fight him, either.

“Ah, yes. It was a bit hard for me to do since I don’t believe in vampires,” I told him.

“Well…” My mother shrugged. “They aren’t real.” She said, but there was something in her statement that I couldn’t figure out.

“Uhm, do you know anything about them since I remember you having books about vampires when I was a kid,” I told them and I was confused to see their shocked faces.

“What do you mean by book?” My mother asked me, stopping herself from drinking water. “And, what else can you remember when you were a kid?”

“Uh, it’s not clear but I remember you reading a black and gold covered book about vampires. There's a symbol and I couldn’t remember what it was…” I shook my head. “But, yeah…I remember you telling me about it.”

“I see. It’s novel, not really true. Just the imagination of the author.” My father replied.

“Do you still have the book? I want to know about vampires and it might help me.” I told them.

“I threw it away.” It was my brother, coming from his bed, and just waking up. “I mean, I donated them before and not really sure where it was. We donated a lot of books last year.” He said, getting food.

“Oh, do you know the title? Maybe I can find it in the bookstore…” I asked my family.

“Forget it,” my brother simply replied and my parents just shrugged.

I sighed. I guess I have to deal with my own now. I have to search for their existence and to know more about them because if Akihiro is a vampire then there is a possibility that the rest of the night class are vampires.

“Do you really want to know about them?” My father asked. “I’ve read some fiction books about them that I can share to help you with your film.”

“Sure, Dad!” I immediately said. “Please tell me more about it.”

“What do you want to know, dear? There’s a lot.”

“Are they afraid of the sun?” I instantly said. “And, what are vampires? What are their kinds?”

“From what I read, there are a lot of vampires with different kinds so I am not really sure what is true yet you can include in your film about the pureblood vampires as they are the real vampires who can turn humans into vampires. They are the ancestors of all vampires and they have some unique powers compared to other vampires who aren’t pureblooded.” My father started telling me. “Vampires will not die under the sun, they will just burn if they will not have any protection such as their magic rings.”

Magic rings? Akihiro has a lot of rings. Are they protection, then? I remember seeing rings with other night class students.

“They feed on human blood but some on animal blood. Yet they will always need human blood to make them strong. It varies, Alicia. But those are some I can tell you. Remember, too, that vampires can make you follow them just by staring at you.” My father reminded me as if he knew more than those things he mentioned.

“How will I know, then?” I curiously asked. “If what’s in front of me is a vampire.”

“You’ll never know, dear,” Mom said. “Vampires can blend with humans and hide themselves.”

I sighed frustratingly. “If I want to, what should be done?”

“Hmm, it’s kinda difficult because of their reflexes but you can try stabbing them and you’ll see that their wounds will heal faster than humans.” My brother advised me to do it.

I know it would be stupid of me to actually do it knowing I wasn’t sure of his existence yet I will never be able to sleep comfortably without knowing the truth.

For the past few days, I remained calm in front of Akihiro everytime we saw each other. I didn't even have thoughts in my mind for fear he might be able to read it. I pretended to be the same Alicia he knew while I gathered information. Today will be the day I am going to find out the truth about the night class.

"Where did you get the information?" Akihiro asked as I handed over the complete script for our play. "It seems accurate." He replied not looking at me as he was busy reading it.

I did not waste any opportunity. I pulled the dagger from my pocket and stabbed his arms. I was still in shock even though I knew blood would flow, but Akihiro didn't even flinch.

He raised his brow and I sensed fear when he glared at me, slowly removing the dagger in his arms, dropping the paper on the ground. He pulled his handkerchief, wiping the blood. I confirmed his identity when I saw no wound in his arms.

He smirked, placing the dagger on my neck.
