CHAPTER 1: MOVING

Evangeline's P.O.V

"EVANGELINE! IT'S TIME TO GO!" My mother yelled and I sighed. Today was moving day and I have to live with my great-grandmother, who I haven't even met yet.

"Mom why do we have to move?" I asked her while giving her my last box. She took it and packed it into the car. I thought she was going avoid my question but then she spoke up.

"Because honey, I can't be in this town anymore. Not after the accident" she said and I saw tears streaming down her face. She wiped them away and quickly made her way to the car. I sighed and made my way into the passenger seat of the car. With a last look, I kissed my childhood home good-bye and my mother drove off.

➰➰➰➰

My mother informed me we had about an hour left on the road so I popped my earphones in my ears and watched the trees pass by. I was just about to ask my mother a question when something zoomed onto the road.

"MOM WATCH OUT!" the car swerved and I blacked out.

But not before I saw a huge dog in the middle if the road looking at me with the brightest blue eyes I have ever seen.

➰➰➰➰

I woke up to these annoying beeping sounds. I tried to open my eyes but the lights were too bright.

Groaning I tried again and this time they opened.

I was hooked up to a I.V. Machine and a bandage on my wrist. I heard voices outside of my room. One of then I recognized as my mother's.

"Ma'am do you know what might have caused the accident?" A man,who I'm assuming was a cop, asked.

"Don't you think if I knew what caused the accident, I've would have told you already?!" My mother hissed

"Ma'am please calm down" the cop started but my mother cut him off.

"CALM DOWN?! YOU WANT ME TO CALM DOWN WHEN MY DAUGHTER'S IN THERE INJURED? SHE'S THE ONLY THING I HAVE LEFT! NOW TELL ME DETECTIVE DO YOU HAVE ANY CHILDREN?" She yelled and I guess he nodded because she continued "WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOUR CHILD WAS LAYING THERE?" The detective was quiet "EXACTLY! NOW IF YOU'LL EXCUSE ME, I WANNA BE THERE WHEN MY LITTLE GIRL WAKES UP" She finished and I closed my eyes to feign sleep. I heard the door creak open and a second later my mother grabbed my hand. I heard her sobbing and muttering things.

"God please don't take her away from me, I can't deal with losing her. Please"

"Mommy?" I asked when I couldn't take her crying anymore. She gasped and grabbed my face, placing kisses over every inch of it. I winced and she looked at me with concern.

"Oh, my baby, how are you feeling? Let me go get the nurse!" She got out of her chair and was heading to the door when I grabbed her hand.

"What happened Mom?" I asked and she sat back down while taking my hand in hers.

"Well, I don't know exactly but when you screamed I swerved to the side and we hit a telephone pole" she said and looked at me "Sweetie, what did you see?" I looked at her funny.

"You mean you didn't see that huge dog in the middle of the road?"

"What dog sweetheart?" She said

"Mom, there was a huge dog that ran into the middle of the road! Didn't you see it?" She shook her head and I sighed. Something popped into my head at that very moment. "Mom, how did we get here? I remember blacking out and then nothing"

"Well apparently, we both blacked out. I was told that a Good Samaritan pulled us out of the car after tree collapsed on the car, but when the ambulance arrived on the scene, no one was there and we were on the grass a couple of feet away from the car" I was about to tell her I didn't remember anything, when the doctor walked in. He was in his late forties, I'm guessing the same age as my mother. His has light brown hair and kind green eyes. He looked at both of us and smiled but I noticed his gaze kept going back to my mother. She seemed oblivious to the situation and made her way over to him. He coughed and I noticed that his neck and ears started turning a deep red. I would have thought the situation was hilarious if I wasn't currently laying in a hospital bed.

"How is she Doctor?" My mother asked while pulling the edge of his sleeve. The blush made its way to his face and he looked down at my chart.

"Uh..." he cleared his throat "Evangeline is doing well" he said and looked at me. He seemed surprised and looked back at my chart with a confused face. My mother noticed this and started freaking out.

"WHAT HAPPENED? IS SHE OKAY?" Her face was filled with absolute terror.

"Yes,yes she's fine, it's just that when she came here she had scrapes and bruises across her face and palms. Now I hardly see cuts anywhere and her bruising is barely noticeable?" My mother calms down and looks at me.

"She's always been that way. Ever since she was little. I used to call her my little invincible girl because she rarely got hurt" my mother smile at the memory and the doctor chuckled. He looked down at her and his eyes lit up. I felt like I was intruding on something private. I coughed and they snapped back to reality.

"Um... yes well... Evangeline, if your feeling better, you can be discharged" the Doctor said and smiled. My mother thanked him and he left. A couple minutes later a nurse walked in with release papers and my mother signed them quickly. A hour later and we were in a taxi headed to my great-grandma's house.

"Mom, where's our stuff?" I asked as the driver made a left.

"Oh, the police were kind enough to take it to your great-grandmother's house" she said and continued to stare out the window. The driver turned left onto a dirt road and on a long driveway surrounded by trees. Since it was getting darker it made it look like a scene from one of those horror movies. I was freaking out and was just about to jump out of the car and run for the hills when the driver stopped in front of a two story wooden house. Something about it gave me chills. My mother jumped out of the car and paid the man who was grabbing our bags. He nodded and then quickly jumped in the car, and I swear I heard him burn rubber. He must have been just as freaked out as I was. We were just collecting our bags when a woman came out of the house. She looked like she was in her late 70's with white hair and crinkles around her eyes, and mouth. She had a smiled on her face but her eyes were cold and calculating.

She came up to us and my mother greeted her.

"Hello Dorothea, it's great to see you again" my mother said cheerfully and the woman nodded while never taking her eyes off me. I looked away because she was starting to make me uncomfortable. My mother pulled away from the hug and introduced us.

"Evangeline, this is your great-grandmother Dorothea. She was your father's grandmother" my mother said the last part quietly. Dorothea nodded at me and we all stood there awkwardly until Dorothea spoke up.

"Well it's nice to meet you Evangeline. I'm sorry I couldn't be at the hospital, Something came up " she said and I was taken aback. What kind of woman wouldn't drop what they were doing for family. Something about her struck me funny and I'm glad we only have to live with her until mom finds a job at the hospital. "Come let's go inside" she said then turned around not bothering to wait for us.

"Well isn't she just a ball of sunshine!" I said sarcastically.

"Be nice Eva" my mother said and I rolled my eyes.

"Fine" I said and my mother walked ahead of me into the house. I followed her but then stopped short when I felt eyes watching me. I turned and scanned the forest looking for the person watching me. I found nothing except a dark blur running through the forest. Something about that blur called to me and I was going to go after it when a cold calloused hand touched my shoulder. I jumped and spun around to face Dorothea. She had a scowl on her face and reached around me to close the door.

"Child close the door, you never know what could be lurking in the night"
