Chapter 13: The Proposal

Kyle

My people have reported that the Lombard farm is quiet. There isn’t any sign of danger, thus now I am second guessing what the teller told me. If the witch is in trouble, there should be signs pointing to that fact. Now I have to convince her danger is brewing without any tangible threat lurking. What a nuisance….

Pressing my foot on the accelerator of my Pagani Huayra BC, the car jerks forward. I practice the speech I’m going to say to the witch; as I do, I wonder what she looks like. For a witch, twenty-one years of age is quite young. I can’t imagine having a meaningful conversation with an adolescent about how her life's in danger and how I can save her.

Save her from who or what? I pray Mathias has assembled a group to attack the Lombard farm as planned. The attack will be fake, but should be enough to drive the point of danger across. I come to the rescue, sweep her off her feet, and boom. The girl is mine.

As I direct my focus back to driving, I notice the road leading to the farm is deserted and poorly lit. Most of the lights are off or vandalized, and although my LED headlights are bright, I still have to rely on my sharp vampiric eyesight for better vision.

An odor of something burning lingers in the air, making me shift in the driver’s seat as I inch my face toward the infotainment screen. I told Mathias specifically to attack only after I arrived. That way I would be able to ‘fend off’ the attack and be the hero.

Are they attacking earlier than we discussed?

I see the outline of the farmhouse from the narrow dusty road outside the gate. Suddenly there is a cacophonic bang and I feel my car shake and vibrate.

“I told you to attack when I arrived,” I say to Mathias through the mind link.

“We didn’t attack. We are still in the woods that surround the house waiting for your word. A fire arrow came from somewhere in the mountains near the river and struck the barn. The barn caught fire and suddenly the ground shook…kind of like an earthquake,” Mathias explains.

I frown as I step on the brakes. I quickly get out of the car, strip my leather jacket and begin shifting. The fabric tears as my clothes part way to welcome my wolf form.

Again, I feel the ground shaking as dark smoke moves like a snake on the ground toward the farmhouse. Black magic! This isn’t a wolf or vampire attack; it is very dark energy…unseen, but deadly.

I sprint toward the house and decide to fully transition into my two-legged vampire-wolf form. I hear screams directed from the burning house that looks just about ready to collapse. WIthout hesitation, I burst through the front door leaving pieces of splintered wood all over the ground as I make my way inside.

Immediately, I spy a group of people huddled under a huge oak table. Their eyes widen the moment that they see me, but I can’t tell if that’s a good or bad thing. I glance around the house and in the corner, next to a fireplace, I see two women and a small boy huddled together.

My eyes lock with those of the younger woman. I know those eyes; I know that face. This was the girl I met at my club.

When she sees me, she immediately positions herself as a human shield protecting the young boy and older woman. It seems she thinks I am the one attacking them and prepares herself to fight me. Her eyes turn into a shimmering green hue as a strong wind surrounds her and she begins levitating.

So, this is the witch? My witch? She has to be.

I think it was her twenty-first birthday she had been celebrating at my club. She had been so close to me that night, yet I had no idea that it was her…the very answer to my problems.

Her skirt blows in the wind and exposes milky white flesh. I can’t help but stare…my animal instinct makes me want to grab her by the waist and bend her…No! Focus. This isn’t the right time for these lustful emotions.

Since I can talk in my hybrid form, I ask her in an agitated voice, “Can you put a protection spell around the house? Someone is using magic to attack you.”

The wind beneath her becomes a bit calmer as she narrows her gaze at me. I watch her as she glides gently back to her feet. I think she believes that I am not a threat; although, I wonder what she thinks of me. In my hybrid form, I resemble the outcome of a polar bear mixed with a wolf, as if the two had a baby…just bigger. Much bigger.

My snout is more defined and I know my vampire fangs are sticking out amongst the huge wolf canines. My gray eyes must look even more daunting. Maybe the white of my fur was enough to make her believe that I come in peace.

“I…I don’t know any magic,” she answers in a panicked voice.

Fuck!

“Did you bring Rhia?” I ask Mathias through the mind link.

Rhia is a witch and Mathias’ mate. I had suggested he bring her in case we needed someone with a witch’s powers to subdue the very witch we came to see. I hadn’t been sure how she would respond to any attacks, even though they would have been fake. Now, this is a real attack and the virgin witch seems clueless on what to do. The teller was right.

“Yes,” Mathias responds.

“Tell her to cast a protection and neutralizing spell around the property,” I say.

Not before long, the house stops shaking. Mathias makes his way into the house with a bag of clothes. I take it and quickly go out to shift back into my human form and get dressed.

When I return, my eyes search for those mesmerizing emerald eyes again. The girl locks eyes with me. I smile, but she doesn’t return the gesture. Instead, with her arms extended, she stands as a barrier, blocking me from the people in the house. They all stand behind her, and I want to laugh. Although she probably will become powerful in the future, right now she is useless as their only line of defense.

Granted, the witch can fly, but if she has no idea about how to chant a general protection spell, then she can’t protect anyone, let alone herself. The dark magic that I sensed when I got here wouldn’t have mercy on a wanna-be Captain Marvel .

And what is a witch doing in a hunter’s household anyway? Why is she protecting the very people that are a threat to her very existence? Has she heard about Salem?

“Hi, my name is…” I start, but she cuts me off.

“Kwaad, the hybrid.”

I raise a brow. Oh, okay. So she either has a gift of reading who a person is, or someone told her who I was that day at the club.

“My name is Kyle.” I correct her. Kwaad is my nickname on the battlefield, but I prefer that people call me Kyle.

“I was waiting for you, Kyle. So, will you protect my family from whatever that was? I know you want something from me in return, and I will do whatever you want…just as long as Roy and Ma are safe,” she replies in a calm cadence.

Anything…huh? I can’t help but picture her naked underneath me, her head thrown back as I taste every corner of her body, drinking up every last drop of juice that pools in her most sensitive core. I can hear her crying for me to take her, to fill her up with my rod and male nectar, causing her to shiver in ecstasy over and over again….

My gods she is gorgeous.

I stare at the girl and the people she is motioning to with her head. Wasn’t that the hunter’s wife and son? That would mean she is their daughter like Hunter George mentioned.,,,

Wait, how did a hunter father a pure-blooded witch?

Something’s off and I’m not leaving without answers.
