Chapter Three

Claire

They took a shortcut through the woods and soon they could hear sounds of cheering, had the Alpha King shown up already?

Claire’s curiosity mounted as they broke free of the cover of trees and appeared on a wide driveway. There were ropes on either side of it, to keep away a teeming crowd of young women.

Actually, now that Claire looked closer, there were a handful of middle-aged women too. Did they also want to be the Alpha King’s Fated mate?

Rachael was quite resourceful, managing to push through the cheering crowd to get to the front of the ropes so that they could get a clear view of the people going inside.

There were large gates at the end of the driveway that led to the resort no doubt. They opened occasionally and Claire could catch glimpses of exquisite-looking gardens when she peeked in.

“Is he here yet?” She yelled to Rachael over the din of the cheering crowd. It was like a horde of fangirls waiting for their favorite celebrity to show up, some girls were even holding up signs saying ‘Marry Me!’.

Claire hoped that he would show up soon, she didn’t like such loud places.

It probably wasn’t the case but she felt like the only human here, it made her feel awkward and out of place.

“Not yet.” Rachael yelled back, leaning over the ropes to get a better look.

Most of the people coming in were in cars, so they couldn’t get a good look at them. What if the Alpha King just drove right in? Then they wouldn’t even get to see him at all.

Claire didn’t have to worry about that though, because as soon as he drove up, he got out of his car to greet the excited ladies that specifically came out to see him.

He was still a distance away from her and Claire had to lean over the ropes like Rachael and the rest of the girls to get a look at him. She couldn’t hear or see properly but it sounded like he wasn’t only giving out handshakes but also having brief conversations with some lucky girls.

Claire couldn’t help but get swept up in the enthusiasm of the crowd, it was easy to forget she was human and just join in the excitement thrumming through the werewolves around her.

Lucas

Lukas Grey knew that his popularity with the werewolves in his territory was a little odd for an Alpha King but he loved his people, he didn’t mind. He knew that this would go on till he got a mate and, since he was yet to make any headway in finding his mate, he might as well enjoy the attention for now.

He was actively looking for a mate though, because he needed a Luna Queen by his side to help rule and grow his territory. Not to mention that the anticipation of him finding his mate was at a fever pitch, not just in his territory but in other werewolf territories as well.

As the youngest Alpha King currently, he was in a prime spot to grow to be even more powerful and influential. Other Alpha Kings wanted their daughters to be his mate to strengthen alliances between their territories.

But Lukas wasn’t going to just choose anyone as his mate, it had to be his Fated mate. He knew a lot of werewolves didn’t have the patience to search for their Fated mate or end up falling in love with someone else and that was fine but his personal decision was to mate no one else but the woman fated to him.

His Fated mate would be attuned to his very soul and he would know the moment he saw her. Right now, he would wave and smile at the teeming young, female werewolves vying for his attention but none were his Fated mate, unfortunately.

He had no hopes of finding her here, to begin with, he had been to so many towns in his territory where the reception for his appearance was much grander than this and yet he hadn’t spotted his mate. There was no chance of him finding her here…

Halfway through the driveway leading to the resort's entrance, Lukas suddenly stood stock still and looked over to the other side of the driveway.

This caused murmurs and whispers to start up, the cheering crowd wondering what had made their Alpha King behave so strangely.

Lukas knew that he was staring a little too hard at the lady that had caught his attention but he couldn’t help himself. She was the only person not screaming her throat hoarse, she just stood and stared back at him with something like confusion and nervousness in her soft green eyes.

There was a strange tingle in Lukas’ spine and his heart did flips. No one told him how it would feel when he found his Fated mate because it differed for everyone but he knew without a doubt that the girl sharing his gaze was his…

His Fated mate…

He couldn’t believe it. The one person that he had been searching for, for so long, was right here under his nose the entire time.

He immediately strode in her direction, the guards standing around him frowning at this bizarre action. The entire crowd looked from their Alpha King to the girl that had caught his attention and back again - Just what was going on?

Excitement filled Lukas up as he crossed the driveway in a hurry to the other side but soon, a niggling feeling started to bother him, and the closer he got to his Fated mate, the worse the ominous feeling got.

The tingle in his spine got doused by ice-cold water but his heart only flipped faster. He got to her and held her face in his hand, the previously hopeful expression in his eyes dying out.

“She’s a fucking human.” He whispered furiously, rage replacing his previous excitement.

This had to be a fucking joke.
