CHAPTER Four - Behind The Screams

Freya was on her couch with the TV turned on, but her mind was on Dr. David. The same questions that have been running through her mind ever since she had moved to that town kept surfacing.

What were making those screams? Were they animals or human? She decided that was the best time to search his house just as she planned with Salma.

It was late afternoon and she had heard him start his car when he had gone out earlier that day. She only prayed that Sophie wasn't home.

She picked up a bobby pin from inside a drawer in her kitchen and went out of the house.

Freya stood at Dr. David's door, she looked around to make sure no one was outside to witness her break in, and used the bobby pin to unlock the door. She trudged into the house, and looked around it. The house looked the same as hers and that made her know that there was a basement.

She opened the door with caution, and walked down the stairs. There was nothing but a large, steel door after the stairs. She opened it, feeling uneasy about what she was about to find.

The room was larger than the basement. There were big jars on top of shelves with human body parts inside them. As she walked further in, she felt disgusted at Dr. David. She saw some people inside cages; three of them, two were unconscious and one was conscious, but he looked barely alive.

He wasn't wearing any clothes, except for a stained shorts. She could see that his arms had open cuts on them and his stomach was in stitches.

The man simply stared at her with an unsteady gaze. "Go back." He said in a low, hoarse voice.

She ignored him and moved her attention to the other two prisoners. They were women and fully dressed. She moved to the center of the room and studied the operating table there. It looked like the usual operating table with a table holding a tray of operating equipment near it. She stretched her hand out to touch the tray, but a loud noise from above the basement stopped her.

"Run!" The man in the cage yelped.

She ran out of the basement, but stopped at its door. She pushed it open quietly and peered around to see what the commotion was about.

"Yes Clara, I am sure that I locked my door before going out." Dr. David's voice drifted to Freya, so she knew that he was standing close by.

She made her way slowly yo his kitchen which was facing the basement's door, and went out through his back door.

She climbed over the fence to her house and dropped in a crouch.

Dr. David came back from disposing the body of his dead victim, he had left him in his backyard for his family to find him. He was surprised to find his front door unlocked, and he had called Clara Wilde instantly to let her know.

She was the power backing him in this town, she pulls strings to help him cover up his kidnappings and murders, and to keep people that knew about him like Mr. Othman quiet.

"Hello," Dr. David spoke when Clara Wilde answered his call.

"Hello Sam, why are you calling me today when you know that I will be busy meeting the mayor." She chastised him in an annoyed voice.

"Someone broke into my house, and I think it's Freya Jacob."

"Are you sure that you locked your door before going out?"

"Yes Clara, I am sure that I locked my door before going out."

"If it's as you've said, Freya Jacob broke into your house, then we need to do something about her before she tries exposing us."

"Spill." Salma plumped down on the chair opposite Freya as she placed their food on the table between them. It was their lunch break and they were at their usual diner, Betty's.

Freya looked up from her phone, kept it on the table and pulled the food to her.

"About?" She asked, truly not understanding what Salma was referring to.

"The guy you've been texting."

"You mean Finn." Salma hummed and waited for her to continue as she ate her mashed potatoes.

"We met at that 'Community For All' party that everyone in Community town has to attend. He asked for my number and I gave it to him because he has a girlfriend and won't try to make a move on me, and he was the only one at the party that actually cared to ask."

"Anyway, did you get to go into Dr. Creepy's house?" Salma changed the subject, and Freya leaned in before she replied her.

"I did, and it was more than creepy. The man had people in cages!"

Salma gasped holding her palm to her chest. "You can't be serious!"

"I am, and the worst thing is that he's experimenting on them because they had cuts and stitches all over their bodies. He also keeps body parts in jars like a witch in a horror movie."

"Oh God!" Salma looked shocked and freaked out.

"Your gut is right. That man is a serial killer! We have to report him."

"No, I need to investigate more first." Freya reasoned with a sigh.

Bring!

Bring!

Bring!

Freya's phone rang at that moment and she that it was Finn calling her.

"Hello?"

"Hi."

"Percy left me, she said that she doesn't feel the spark in our relationship anymore."

Silence. Freya didn't know how to respond, a minute passed before she replied.

"Oh Finn, it's her loss. You are a great guy, and I am sure that many girls want to be with you." He laughed.

"But they're not the one I want."

Freya was not sure how to reply for the second time during their conversation. It seemed like he was trying to flirt, but she didn't want to be a rebound.

"I have to go, my lunch break is about to end." Sh gave her excuse and cut the call.

"So?"

"So, what?"

"Why did he call you?"

"My nosiness is starting to rub off on you. He told me about his breakup with his girlfriend."

"Finally!" Salma clapped her hands excitedly. "You have a chance with him now."

"He's not my type." Freya thought back to Luke's fun and carefree attitude. "Besides, I don't want to be a rebound."
