Chapter 4
When they got in, they took a table not too far from the door. The waiter approached them requesting their orders. She handed them two menus, for them to look through. Laila was about to place her order. "I'd have the...," she was interrupted by Adam when he said, "We'd have pancakes and two cups of hot chocolate. "I don't like hot chocolate", she murmured. He grinned,
"You'd have it either way." Laila was getting frustrated with his attitude. A few minutes later, the waiter brought their meal. Adam being a heavy eater, took less than ten minutes to get done with his food. Laila played around with hers until she got lost in thought again. This whole charade had gone on for too long. Her life had been ruined in Malibu. And she knew she could never go back, the police would be searching for her. She was already a suspect for Elena's death and more so the lady at the motel. This was all too much for her to handle, she would only relive the pain every second she was with Adam and each time she looked at his face. And it wasn't like it happened years back, it was all too fresh.
"I'd love to use the bathroom," she said.
"I'll go with you". Adam blurted out.
"Please it'll only be a while, I won't run away". She said, trying to convince him.
"Says someone who's tried running not too long ago, and I can read your body language, Laila," He said insisting. "Up! Let's go pee", he said provocatively.
Whilst they approached the bathroom door, Laila pointed out that there was a long line but he didn't mind waiting for her right there. After a few minutes, she got into the restroom while he waited outside. She had taken longer than six minutes as he took note of. Pounding on the door,
"I can bet you're done, you can come out now." "I'm not done, give me a minute," she answered. About two minutes later, he heard familiar voices walk into the restaurant. He put an ear out, using his wolf sense to get every word they uttered.
"We've been on their trail all night, it isn't easy to track them down, but I think we finally got here as I can smell them". Take a turn by the bathroom entry, Damon said to one of his pack members. While you, Damon turned to Logan, "Sit with me at the bar, while the rest of you stand guard outside. He gave the rest of his instructions.
"Get out now", Adam silently tried to warn Laila. "There are people out there" she tried to not make a sound while getting her right leg out the bathroom window. But she couldn't get through as it would take longer. Maybe this wasn't the time to do this, she decided to push forward her escape plan. She jumped from the window and hurt her left ankle as it hit a rough patch on the wall. Adam pushed down the door, looked about the restroom, and saw her behind the door he had just banged down, realizing she was hurt. He lifted her over his shoulders and tried taking the back door of the restaurant.
He stopped suddenly when he could sniff the stench of another wolf just by the bathroom entry. He wondered if he would push down the door and just take the run for it, but that won't help if there were many more out there.
His only option was to fight down the men outside. Adam then dropped Laila, telling her to limp her way through the front but pass through the crowd at the counter. He emphasized that she'd look away from the bar and focus on getting to the door and through the backseat into the car. He quickly urged that she should drive to the back as soon as she could. Then he will get in and she nodded and left.
He tried fighting his way through the door, but the man was on guard to the ground. Then another guy from Damon's pack noticed his presence and attacked him. The struggle was intense, they fought to exchange punches aggressively trying to ruin each other's faces. But in about seven minutes, Laila drove by, slowing down for a few seconds to let Adam in. But it wasn't as easy as they had thought. Damon got into the fight trying to ruffle up Adam while Laila drove away from the fight and was almost grateful he got the beating of his life until he bit one of Damon's men. Logan had gone to look for a quiet and lonely spot to change. He wanted to bite off Adam's head. He came to the back growling angrily at Adam. He had this strong desire to help and prove to Damon, he was strong enough. Damon tried stopping him instead. He lifted Logan's wolf self and threw him against a trash can. Adam took advantage of this and tried running. He knew Laila had gone far and he could never catch up with her. Damon couldn't leave Logan in the state he was and although those in the restaurant had not seen everything that transpired, it won't take too long for someone to see an unconscious wolf lying down by a trash can. Two of Damon's men had been beaten up badly by Adam, and one had been crushed. Damon couldn't continue chasing Adam or Laila immediately, but he would catch up with them eventually. He made an effort to get Logan back to consciousness so he could change back to his human self faster. In doing that, he noticed a piece of an envelope that dropped just where he had rumpled up Adam. He picked it up quickly but didn't take any close look at it. He got his men, and Logan back to the car and they drove away.
Whilst in the car, Damon took out the envelope he picked up. Tore it open and noticed a gold seal imprinted on it. It was the seal of the Council for official documents. He turned it over and read it in his mind. Damon's jaw dropped in shock. "I was deceived!" He said feeling distressed and keeping his pack members in a state of muffled thinking.
