Chapter 8

Jasmine had prepared breakfast the following morning, and she was ready to go to work. She noticed that Carly was still in bed, so she went to wake her up.

"Carly... Carly, wake up. Aren't you going to work today?" She asked.

Carly groaned in her sleep and turned to the other side. "I'm tired."

"Carly, you can't decide to not go to work. You know I've only been with you these past few days because we have a legal matter to deal with, and I'm the junior legal practitioner for Landon's company."

Carly sighed and sat up in bed. "Alright, I'm up."

She quickly went to prepare for the day's work. After that, she sat down and ate her breakfast. Jasmine didn't seem to be heading anywhere at all.

"Day off?" Carly asked as she sipped her coffee.

"Not exactly. Landon wants to see me and Felix later today. We get to finalize the case, once that's over, I can finally have a rest. But Felix, he has so many other cases, and chances are that if this one goes well, he can make me his permanent fill-in lawyer."

"Is that even a thing?" Carly asked, giving her a side glance.

Jasmine chuckled. "Think whatever you want."

"Right. Well, I'm somewhat worried about my safety."

"Don't be, Carly. Everything is fine." Jasmine said. "Don't get so worked up over nothing."

"It's not nothing, those people aren't joking at all," Carly said. "You should have seen their faces last night, it was so serious."

"So serious," Jasmine repeated. "I don't get it though, why would some random people just show up after a long time, saying that your father owes them a lot of money, and they want to get it back from you?"

"Exactly," Carly affirmed.

"Well, maybe we can ask your dad first, then we can know the full story," Jasmine said.

Carly sighed. "I don't even want to think about this now, I think I'd just go to work first and see how things turn out to be."

"Alright, if anything happens, give me a beep, okay?"

Carly nodded. She shared a hug with Jasmine and finally left. Carly got to work thirty minutes later. She had to walk down to her working place, and she managed to meet up with the time.

Carly greeted her boss and started her work for the day. She didn't bother with anything else. Landon was hanging around more frequently, and she started to get so irked when she saw him too many times than normal.

"Sir, the documents are the same ones I worked on yesterday. You sent them back to me." She stated.

Landon hummed.

"Sir?"

"Go through them again," Landon replied.

"But I worked on them_"

"You won't argue with me, Miss Carly," Landon said firmly.

"I'm sorry sir, but doing this makes me neglect the main work for the day, and then I would have to do it and end up getting home late." She said with furrowed brows.

Landon chuckled. "I don't see how that's my problem. Hurry up."

Carly was mad. She tried to finish her work as early as possible. After working overtime, she managed to finish about twenty minutes before closing time. She packed up her things. She found her purse lying in her drawer, and she remembered that she had left it behind. That was why she had to walk home and back to work today.

She grabbed it and, without opening it, threw it into her bag. She didn't know that Landon had his eyes on her. She got a message from him saying that if she was done with her work, she could go home. Happy, she started to leave.

Carly never expected that Benji and Ray would survive the attack, or that easily and quickly. Because they were already waiting for her. As she came out of the company, she noticed that she was seeing some faces she could recognize, but from where was what she couldn't tell.

Landon watched her leave the company via his security camera, and he suddenly had the urge to follow her. What if those guys came back to beat her up? He decided to just follow her secretly.

He noticed that the guys returned and returned with more guys. Carly might have been ignorant of the fact that she was being followed. Because he could not help but think that she was dumb if she thought she could lose them in the crowd.

Carly entered a café and two of the new men followed her in to grab some milkshakes. Some of them waited outside, blending into the crowd. This was somehow a bad thing since we could not just tell how many they were and who made up the team.

Carly grabbed a box of donuts and when it was time to pay, she opened her purse to find a stash of cash in it. She froze on the spot. She didn't have such an amount of money, and why was it laying pretty in her purse? The thought that someone might have swapped her purse with her vanished the moment she saw all her cards and even the markings of her pen on the inside of the purse.

Nevertheless, she paid and walked out. As she did, she was still being followed. Carly noticed that night was falling quickly, so she entered a small clothing store. She first texted Jasmine about her whereabouts and what she planned to do.

"Get out through the back." That was all Jasmine said. Carly sighed. But she obeyed. As soon as she opened the door, she was drawn out by a pair of strong arms, while the door was slammed shut by another.

Faced with more bulky men, she believed that Benji and Ray were the most friendly of the lot.

"Listen to me, sweetheart -"

"Once bitten, twice shy," Landon said, completing the sentence. Carly didn't know if to be excited about Landon's presence or scared.
