Happy Mornings

My heart is beating rapidly as if it is going to jump out of my ribcage.

"You will be going to college, and from there, you will be living with humans."

My grandfather's words echoed in my head. They are sending me away. I know I do not belong to their pack.

"Aira, come down," my third brother, Fred, said quietly from the ground. I took the ladder beside my window and climbed it down.

Fred shifted into his wolf form, and I sat on him. He ran along the forest road to meet our brothers. I always duck my head into his fur to save my eyes from the speed of air hitting my face.

I am Aira, a human who lives among wolves. When I was a small baby, my Dark Moon Pack Alpha was challenged into an alpha battle by Alpha Luis of the Red blood pack, and Alpha Luis won the challenge. My grandfather was the war's commander-in-chief. They won the war and acquired my previous pack. It is said that he picked me up from there and brought me home.

As I was from an enemy pack, he could not adopt me. Above that, I am a human; humans are never part of the Alpha Luis pack. Humans are regarded as frail and vulnerable. If anyone has mated with a human, they are banished from our pack. Grandfather gave up his position as commander to keep me alive, and David, his son, was never made a commander. Uncle David and Aunt Fiona never despised me. They took me in as their daughter, and along with their sons, I grew up as part of their family.

Ralph, Thomas, and Fred are the triplets of my Uncle David and Aunt Fiona. Ralph will be our future commander, and Thomas works as the south patrol team head. Fred is a general; he is very good at weapon design.

They are my pillars; I should say they are my walls. No one ever dared to bully me or try to attack me. Fred and I are very close. Every night, we work on designing different kinds of weapons. We only use these weapons within our family.

Alpha Luis does not trust his pack members. He always trains them like soldiers to protect him. If you are attacked, you can choose to die or be amputated. Survivors are provided the badge of "hero of the pack."

My grandfather and Uncle David formed their group after losing many friends during the war, men who were devoted to their work. We could have moved to another pack, but that is not easy. Grandfather, Uncle, and Ralph are in higher positions and know all the pack secrets, according to Alpha. So, moving out means death.

All the men in their group help each other financially and emotionally. We protect from danger and stand by each other if there is any attack.

My elder brother trains me during the night. Training continues until early morning.

Fred brought me to our location—an old watch tower built during the war. Thomas is the head of the south patrol team. We started using this abandoned watch tower in the south as our secret base for training and weapon design. A secret underground base was built in the watch tower by my grandfather. Alpha Luis forgot about this underground secret long ago.

Fred went back to his patrol duties, dropping me off by the tower. I sneaked into it and reached the top area to train with Ralph.

"Hi Ralph," I greeted him.

"Today we will be training on wolf weak points. I want you to feel my wolf's weak points and hit on them," he said

"Will you attack me?" I asked him carefully. "Today you will read the wolf structure, and tomorrow I will attack," I suggested

"Okay," Ralph said

Thomas shifted to wolf and Ralph started explaining to me wolf weaknesses and trying to understand the body structure.

After training, Ralph dropped me back home. It was already morning, and I decided to go to sleep.

A loud thud on my door woke me up from sleep.
