Chapter 4: Sacrifices for the greater good

Years went by, and I became more skilled at hunting and tracking. I honed my senses and learned to move silently through the forest, blending in with my surroundings. I also grew more cautious, knowing that danger could lurk around every corner. But despite the risks, I refused to live in fear. I was a survivor, and nothing would stop me from living my life on my own terms.

I crept towards the cabin, my heart pounding with excitement and trepidation. As I got closer, I could see that the cabin was small but cozy, with a few windows and a door that looked sturdy. There was a small vegetable garden nearby, with neat rows of carrots, peas, and potatoes. My mouth watered at the thought of fresh vegetables, something I hadn't tasted in a long time.

I took a deep breath and approached the door, my hand hovering over the doorknob. I could hear the muffled sound of conversation inside, but I couldn't make out any words. With a sudden burst of courage, I pushed open the door and stepped inside.

The first thing I noticed was the warmth. The cabin was small, but it was heated by a roaring fire in the fireplace. There were two people sitting at a table in the corner, their backs to me. They were talking and laughing, their voices muffled by the sound of the crackling fire. They didn't seem to notice me at first, so I cleared my throat to get their attention.

The two people turned to face me, and I could see that they were both werewolves like me. One was an older man with grizzled hair and a scar across his cheek. The other was a younger woman with bright blue eyes and a friendly smile. They both looked at me in surprise, but didn't seem to be afraid.

"Who are you?" the man asked, his voice gruff but not unkind.

"I'm just passing through," I said, trying to sound confident.

"I heard voices and thought I'd see who was here."

The woman nodded, her eyes flickering with curiosity.

"You're a lone wolf, aren't you?" she said.

"We don't get many visitors out here."

I nodded, feeling a sense of relief that they weren't hostile.

"I've been on my own for a long time," I said.

"It's good to see others like me."

The man grunted, pouring himself a cup of tea from a pot on the stove.

"We're not exactly a pack," he said.

"But we look out for each other. You're welcome to stay for a while, if you like."

I hesitated, not sure if I was ready to give up my freedom just yet. But the warmth of the fire and the smell of the cooking food was enticing. Maybe it was time for me to try something different.

"I'd like that," I said, feeling a small smile forming on my lips. "Thank you."

As we sat down to share a meal, I felt a sense of belonging that I hadn't felt in a long time. Maybe this was what I had been searching for all along. But as we ate and talked, I couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't quite right. There was a tension in the air, a sense of unease that I couldn't quite place.

And then, as we finished our meal we all decided to sleep for the night. As we slept on, I heard a faint howl in the distance. It was a mournful sound, full of longing and despair. My instincts kicked in, and I knew that danger was lurking nearby.

I turned to my new companions, my eyes wide with fear.

"Do you hear that?" I whispered. "We're not alone out here."

Just a second later I felt an ant bite on my right hand, and I suddenly woke up with excruciating pain.

“Oh, damn!” It was just a nightmare? I said silently to myself without anybody noticing.

I took a glance at the old wall clock sitting on the blue painted flower verse and it was 06:15 am already.

So I had to stand up, walk straight to the cabin toilet to wash my face with cold water. Thereafter, I went back to sit on my bed, pondering on my nightmare and then suddenly a different thought entirely entered my mind. It was the thought of having a mate.

As a werewolf now dwelling in the small town of Burywoods, I had always yearned for a mate. I longed for someone who would love and protect me, and with whom I could build a family. But finding a mate was not an easy task. I had met many werewolves in my search, but none of them seemed right for me. Some were too aggressive, while others were too timid. Some just didn't have the right chemistry.

But I kept hope alive, always believing that the moon goddess would lead me to my mate. So, every full moon, I would go out to the woods, hoping to feel a shift in the air, a sign that my mate was near. But months went by, and I still couldn't find him.

I started to lose hope, wondering if the moon goddess had forsaken me.

It was a clear, cold night in the middle of winter, and I was out on my usual run when I suddenly felt a shift in the air. It was as if the moon goddess was speaking to me, telling me that something was about to happen. My heart started to race, and I could feel my senses sharpening.

That was when I caught the scent. It was a scent I had never smelled before, and yet it was so familiar. I followed it, darting through the woods, my heart beating faster with every step. I knew I was getting closer, and I could feel the anticipation building inside me.

I burst out of the trees and skidded to a stop in front of him. He was tall, muscular, and had piercing green eyes that seemed to look right through me. My heart skipped a beat as our eyes met, and I felt a jolt of electricity shoot through me.

He was my mate.

We stood there for a few seconds, just looking at each other. I could feel the connection between us growing stronger with each passing moment. It was as if we were the only two beings in the world, and nothing else mattered. But then he spoke, and the spell was broken.

"Hello," he said, his voice low and smooth. "My name is Jake."

I hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to say. But then I realized that I had to introduce myself as well.

"I'm Mabel," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

We talked for a while, getting to know each other, and I could feel myself falling deeper and deeper under his spell. He was kind, intelligent, and had a sharp sense of humor that made me laugh. I couldn't believe that I had finally found my mate after all this time.

But then he dropped a bombshell on me. He was only passing through town and had to leave the next day. My heart sank as I realized that our time together was limited. I wanted to spend every moment with him, but I knew that it was impossible.

We said our goodbyes, and I watched as he disappeared into the woods. I knew that I had to find a way to be with him, no matter what it took.
