Chapter 5: A Cry in the Night
I spent the next few days trying to track him down, but it was like he had vanished into thin air as if fate was playing a cruel joke on me. I started to panic, wondering if I had lost my chance at happiness.
My companions tried to console me, telling me that Jake would show up when the time was right. But their words offered little comfort as my thoughts consumed me.
Was he avoiding me? Did he regret our connection? My mind raced with questions that I had no answers to.
As the days passed, I felt like I was going crazy, and found myself wandering aimlessly through the woods, hoping for a sign of Jake. But each passing day brought nothing but silence. It was as if the forest was conspiring against me, withholding the information I so desperately sought.
Just as I was about to give up hope, I felt a vibration from my cell phone in my pocket. It was a message from Jake, and my heart leapt in my chest. He was coming back to town, and he wanted to see me.
My heart leaped with excitement and relief. It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders, and I couldn't wait to see him again.
But I had to quickly compose myself, trying to contain the excitement that threatened to overwhelm me. It had been so long since I had seen him, and I wondered what he would look like now. I could hardly contain my anticipation.
But as I waited for Jake to arrive, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. The air was thick with tension, and I wondered if there was trouble brewing in Burywoods. I didn't want to jump to conclusions, but my instincts were telling me that something wasn't right.
When we finally met, I could tell something had changed. Jake was different - his aura, his scent, everything about him seemed altered. But I couldn't put my finger on what it was exactly.
"I'm sorry, Mabel," Jake said, looking down at his feet.
"I had to leave. There were things I had to take care of."
I was still trying to process his sudden return, but I couldn't let him off that easily.
"What kind of things, Jake? You can't just leave like that and expect me to be okay with it."
"I know, I know," he replied, running a hand through his hair. "But I promise, it was important. And it's not over yet."
I raised an eyebrow, curious. "What do you mean it's not over yet?"
"I can't say too much right now," Jake replied cryptically. "But I need your help. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't important."
My heart raced at the thought of being needed by Jake. But at the same time, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. I decided to play it cool, to see where this would lead.
"Okay, I'll help," I said slowly. "But you need to tell me everything. And I mean everything."
Jake looked at me with a mixture of gratitude and relief. "Thank you, Mabel. You won't regret this."
But as he left, I couldn't shake off the feeling that something was still amiss.
What was Jake really up to? And how was I involved?
I started to investigate, I found myself getting deeper and deeper into a web of deceit, lies, and danger. It seemed like every time I got close to the truth, something happened to set me back.
And all the while, Jake was always one step ahead of me. I couldn't shake off the feeling that he was playing some kind of game with me, and that I was just a pawn in his plans. But I couldn't stop now. I was in too deep.
As I dug deeper, I discovered that Jake was involved in a secret society of werewolves. They had their own laws, their own code, and they were willing to do anything to protect their own.
And it seemed like Jake was their leader.
I didn't know what to do. I was in love with a man who was involved in a dangerous and mysterious world. But I couldn't just walk away. I had to help him. I had to find a way to be with him, to protect him.
But I knew that it wouldn't be easy. There were forces at work that were beyond my control, and I was just a simple werewolf caught in the middle of it all.
It’s now one month and six days, and I’m yet to get a clue of what is actually going on in my relationship with Jake. But I trust my instinct, “I will smoothly sort this out”.
And then, one night, he didn't come back at all. I waited up for him, pacing back and forth in my room, my heart pounding with fear. When morning came and there was still no sign of him, I knew something was seriously wrong.
I went to Jake's friend, trying to get information about where he could be. He seemed to know something, but he wasn’t willing to tell me. He was keeping a secret from me, and I didn't know why.
"Please, Lucas," I said, my voice shaking with emotion. "I need to know what's going on. Where is Jake?"
Lucas looked at me with pity in his eyes. "I'm sorry, Mabel," he said. "But Jake isn't who you think he is. He's not the mate that the moon goddess sent to you. He's something else entirely."
I didn't understand what he meant, but before I could ask any more questions, there was a loud commotion outside. We all rushed to the window, and what I saw made my blood run cold.
Jake was out there, surrounded by a group of strange werewolves!
They were all snarling and snapping at him, and he looked terrified. But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was the way he was fighting back. His eyes had turned a sickly shade of yellow, and his teeth had grown into razor-sharp fangs.
"What?", I yelled.
“Is Jake a monster?.
