Hold on! Their heavy accents and their use of ancient Scottish slang gave Jane an ominous feeling.
Since she was sucked into the ancient book by that weirdo, did it mean he somehow sent her back in time?
"Then, then... may I ask what date it is? Which clan are you from? And who is your present chieftain?"
"That's it?" 
Alexander and the others were taken aback by the simple nature of her questions. They weren't hidden knowledge, as even ordinary passersby from other clans could answer her questions. 
Alexander was still wary of her, but answered truthfully. If the lass had devious plans for their Mackay clan, he had more than a thousand ways to make her wish she were dead.
"Tis August 2nd, 1312 and we come from the Mackay clan. As for the present Chieftain, 'tis Sir Alexander Mackay."
The news made Jane's eyes swell with excitement.

Jane lowered her head.
