CHAPTER THREE

Away from the pack, a massive white wolf was now speeding through the dense forest, jumping over fallen logs and twisting around the towering grove of trees toward the borders.

The border between Wolfendon and Viserryan was represented by a line of trees on high ground.

As soon as the white wolf got to the border, it halted and looked at the land that was across the border. It was swamped with clusters of trees. Suffocated by its branches the dense foliage prevented anything under their coverage to be seen.

The white wolf shifted back, and Koryn slowly stood up straight. She opened a bag that she wrapped around her neck in her wolf form and brought out clothes.

“You didn’t have to bring extra clothes”. Her wolf complained silently in her head.

“Do you expect me to run around in tattered clothes?” Koryn asked as she quickly changes her clothes.

“We can go into Viserryan in wolf form, no need to shift back”.

“I am very confident in winning, but I am not stupid. A wolf running into Viserryan, do want to alert the whole town?”. Koryn asked. Sometimes she feels like her wolf was not so smart.

“You are right”. Koryn felt as if the wolf was nodding right now.

“Let’s go”.

Koryn ran towards the dense trees. As the world around her moved in slow motion, she ran through the dark forest, her eyes alert and sharp. She noticed a town ahead and increased her pace. Getting to the edge of the town, she peered into the darkness and she was stunned.

It looked as if she was sucked back in time. The first few houses she saw were built according to the housing structure normal in this day and time, but the further she went, the more bewildered she became.

She saw estates that were prominent in the victorian era, though she saw a few cars and what looked like hotels but everything else was antique. It felt like she was stuck between time. Between the present and the past.

She wondered why nobody at Wolfendon has ever said anything about this. Maybe no one has ever gotten this far.

At the very end of her view, she saw a gothic castle towering high. It looked dark and eerie. She shivered, Viserryan lived up to its name.

Walking forward with steady movements, she noticed hurried movements behind her and she dashed into an alley beside her. Waiting for the right moment to lunge forward, she heard the two figures discussing.

“Why were you still in the cinema so late?”. One of the figures asked the other.

“The movie was captivating, I was so invested that I didn’t notice that it was already so dark”. They moved sneakily and often take repeated looks behind them as if they were looking out for something.

“Well, when you die your ghost can go back to watch movies all you want without any distance. It’s a win-win right?” The first figure said sarcastically.

Koryn came out from the alley and followed them in a distance, she adjusted her senses to hear their conversation.

“Stop saying things like that”. The other figure was visibly shaken. He took another look behind him.

“Those damn vampires, imposing curfews on us. Can’t they just keep their fangs to themselves?”. The first figure was irritated.

“Stop talking! What if they hear you?”

“I don’t care, we will all be done day anyway”.

“Enough with your talks, let’s just hurry back home before we become one of the unlucky prey tonight”. They increased their pace.

Koryn was surprised. It seems like humans live with vampires in one town. This was surprising because humans ought to be scared of vampires the most because they feed on their blood.

She decides to take a closer look at the figure, they were getting close to a street light and she looks down. She saw shadows, as she suspected they were humans.

Koryn turned back and headed back down when some figures walked out of the alley she hid in before. The walked into the light and she noticed that they were males with towering figures, dark-haired and pale.

“Now, now little princess what are you doing outside all alone? Didn’t your mommy warn you about walking alone at night” One of the men teased her.

“I think she is suicidal, what’s the best way to die other than killing yourself? Of course it is to die by our hands”. The others laughed at his comment.

“My mommy also taught me to deal with bad guys who bully girls on the street”. Koryn retaliated.

“Ooh, she is feisty”. One of them jeered and they whistled.

“I like her attitude but she doesn’t know when to talk and when not to. I will go for the neck”. He made a move to approach Koryn.

“Wait!”. One of the men who stood at the back called out and halted the others. They looked at him in confusion. “She is not from this town”.

The others toned down and took another look at her.

Koryn smirked, she noticed that one of them was quiet and just stared at her as if observing her. Turns out he was the smartest of the whole lot.

One of them took a long sniff and said “That blood, it’s not human”. He took another look at her. “Who are you?”.

They became more alert as they looked at her in apprehension.

“I thought I would be going back today without being satiated. Luckily you came out to be toyed with”. Her dark eyes glinted with golden streaks.

“A werewolf!” One of the men exclaimed.

“A little werewolf against us. I guess the odds are not in your favor”. The men were relaxed again.

“A wolf in Viserryan, whoever kills you gets a big reward,” One of them said excitedly as he drew out his fangs.

“Shift! Shift now” Koryn’s wolf was jumping in her head, itching to fight.

“I’m sorry but you are not getting this one”. Koryn replied her wolf. The wolf was offended and the connection was cut off abruptly.

Seems like the wolf was sulking. She will find a way to appease it later. Right now she has a bunch of annoying vampires to settle with.

She bared out her fangs and drew out her claws as one of the vampires stepped forward. The vampire teleported and was already standing a few inches away from her when she felt a searing pain in her stomach.

Wasting no time gawking at herself, she lunged forward and scratched the vampire’s neck. The vampire stood and held his neck as fear and surprise flickered through his eyes. She sped towards the other vampires and tore the neck of one of them with her teeth.

She growled and maneuvered when another one attacked her from behind, she raised her hand, and the vampire that was too drawn to her in full force raised her other hand and tore through his neck.

The quiet vampire that was studying her the first time noticed how she has already taken down three of them. She seems to have an unusual power. The werewolves that he has encountered can’t pull a person close to them just by raising their hand just like she did. It was remaining just two vampires and they were in a deadlock, moving in around her in circles.

He figured out that the odds were not in their favor and he walked back silently into the dark alley, away from the fight.

Koryn was at a standstill, as she was between the two vampires. Her eyes glinted in excitement. This was more exciting and interesting than she expected.

She raised her hand and threw one of the vampires into the air, she attacked the other one, but before getting to his spot he disappeared. She looked around it was quiet but she could feel his presence. She closed her eyes for some seconds and her ears moved. She threw her claws to her right and dug into the vampire’s chest. Turns out he wanted to give her a sneak attack. He fell slowly with eyes filled with horror.

Koryn looked around, the other one that she threw away has managed to escape. She sighed in disappointment. She raised her hand and wiped away the blood that was smeared on her lips.

She felt a sizzling pain in her stomach, seems like the pain faded during the fight due to adrenalin. She howled and shifted into her wolf form. The big majestic white wolf ran away from the scene, leaving the unusual town behind.

“You sent me away when it was time for a fight. Am I only good for running?”. The wolf complained as it ran towards the border.

“You get your fill next time” Koryn replied tiredly.

“Why did you run away, I thought you wanted to annihilate the whole town,” The wolf said mockingly. It was still sulking about how she excluded it from the fight.

“Keep quiet”.

“Do you think I should come back again whenever I feel bored? They can serve as good punching bags”. Koryn said as if seriously considering it.

“You just got lucky, don’t even think about it”. The wolf increased its pace. Koryn was surprised, was the wolf looking down on her?

The sun was already seeping through the clouds. In an estate, a group of vampires was sitting as four bodies were laying on the floor covered with a white piece of cloth. The silent vampire from the alley was sitting among them observing everyone.

“Are you sure you saw it right?”. Someone asked

“Yes, yes I was there. I was lucky to escape. You can ask Edric, he was there too”. He pointed at the silent vampire.

Edric noticed that everyone was staring at him waiting for his affirmation and he nodded in agreement.

“See, see I told you, I wasn’t lying”. Zev, the vampire that was thrown away declared.

“We believe you Zev, but how can a werewolf, a female at that take down the four of them?”.

“I think the question is, how did she get here in the first place without alerting anyone”.

They heard a calm voice by the door and they all looked up. The man who walked in was tall, with raven hair. His dark eyes looked serene and unbothered. His lips held a smirk. Dressed in a long black trench coat, a tiny teardrop-shaped red gem was embellished into his shirt. He looked noble and enthralling. It was Alexavian Vannoir, the head of Viserryan.

They all bowed down swiftly “My lord” They all echoed.

Beside him was his trusted aide, Jules. He looked at the other vampires as they were still bowing down and he felt pity for them. The lord doesn’t like waiting.

“Now, now I asked a question. Is my voice so melodic that you decided to ignore my question for me to ask again ?” He walked in slowly.

“We don’t know my lord, only Edric, and Zev were there”. They answered quickly.

Zev was angry and afraid at the same time. They were so fast to kick him under the bus.

“What happened?”. Alexavian asked Zev.

Alexavian frowned as a few seconds passed and Zev was still quiet.

Zev looked around in confusion until he met Alexavian cold gaze before he could comprehend that he was the one being spoken to. His heart dropped, he kept Alexavian waiting. He cleared his throat and quickly recounted everything.

Alexavian walked towards the corpses and crouched down. One of the vampires quickly removed the white piece of cloth. Alexavian’s dark orbs scanned through the corpses and got up.

“My lord, how was the werewolf able to kill them with her claw, and they couldn’t heal back or regenerate?”.

“What makes you feel that you can ask me such silly questions? Hmm?” Alexavian with a slight smile on his lips.

“I’m sorry my lord”.

“That’s good, I almost thought you were interrogating me. I was scared”. He let out a wide smile.

The vampire shivered. He simply asked a question, how could the lord be scared? He was just looking for a way to kill.

“My lord, why did you come down for this small matter?”. One of the vampires blurted out.

The other vampires listened with rapt attention. They also wanted to know but they were too scared to ask.

For years Alexavian has been in the castle, not going out. Some even concluded that he was sick, but he finally came down when four vampires died. It was alarming.

At the side, Jules shook his head as he marveled at their stupidity. The first vampire narrowly escaped and they thought it was a good day to ask questions.

“What? Did you think I was dead? Go ahead, you might as well get the job done” Alexavian asked leisurely as he stared hard at the vampire that asked the question.

“I wouldn’t dare my lord” The vampire was trembling. He was regretting his decision in asking now.

“You wouldn't?” The vampire nodded quickly after Alexavian asked the question.

“I know you would be excited if you heard any news about my death but I am an immortal, you would have to put up with me”. He grinned. The vampire heaved a sigh of relief.

“Come here”. He beckoned the vampire over.

The vampire was trembling, he thought it was all over. Seems like he was wrong.

As the vampire was two inches away from Alexavian, He plunged his hand into his chest and dug his heart out.

The vampire’s eyes widened in surprise as he fell slowly to the floor.

“That was quite entertaining, don’t you agree”. The other vampires hurriedly nodded in agreement as if their lives depended on it.

“I am glad we are on the same page for once”. He turned to Jules “Come now Jules, let’s hurry back, I have got blood on my clothes”. He said.

“His blood should have been obedient. I don’t know why it went splashing around. It’s not like it’s delicious”. He complained as he turned around, disappearing with Jules.

The vampires were too stunned to speak. They look at the corpses on the floor. It seems like this case was more serious than they thought.
