Chapter 4

Klaus

Being an Alpha and having a mate was the most vainglorious thing in the werewolf’s world. Our pack was lacking financially, and in every way the other packs were affluent whilst our pack was the lowest because it was the pack of rogues.

My family history was preposterous and mournful. My great-great-grandfather killed his brother because that asshole tried to rape his mate and everyone annunciated him as a rogue. And since then, he started living as a rogue despite having the Alpha genes.

Our pack was virtually the pack of all the rogue werewolves and that’s why we weren’t considered as a decent pack. Everyone behaved like we were some despicable creatures except one pack-Blood Moon Pack.

I was invited to Scarlett’s birthday party. Her alluring chocolate and berry scent drew me to that lake and I had my first kiss with her.

With my mate.

That was the best night of my life. I still hadn’t been able to sleep after that night.

Once you kiss your mate, the mating bond starts working slowly in its own way. You crave your mate so badly.

And deep down, I knew that I was just giving her lame excuses to think of me as a jerk and reject me. I was helpless, I wasn’t able to reject her. Even hurting her was causing me so much guilt that I was hating myself.

The moment I smelled her sweet scent, I knew that she was my mate and I was falling for her.

“Why are you there again, Klaus?” Jenna’s irritated voice jerked me out of my sweet thoughts about my mate. “What are you hiding, brother? You always hide on this cliff whenever you create a mess.”

Ridiculous.

My life wasn’t mine. It was a mess since my grandfather fixed my engagement with an unknown girl who wasn’t even my mate.

“Ask our grandfather, why did he make my life a mess?” I scoffed, hiding the pain I was suffering through since childhood.

Jenna’s green eyes glittered with fury and sympathy, she loved me more than everyone else and that’s why she hated our grandfather for doing that to me. I was destined to marry Dark Moon Pack’s Alpha’s daughter.

Werewolves weren’t supposed to have this kinda arranged marriage. It was clearly a curse for a werewolf, we could feel loved, satisfied with only one person- our true mate.

“You have found your mate, haven’t you?” Jenna sat beside me, sliding her head on my shoulder to comfort me. That was the amazing thing about her, I didn’t have to tell her anything, she would always guess the right thing.

There was no benefit in hiding or lying. I just didn’t want Scarlett to get hurt. If she's mated to me, she’ll get hurt and I won’t be able to do anything.

“I want her to reject me, Jenny. She’s already going through a lot and I don’t want to be another mess in her life. I’m a mess and I’ll make her life messier if she gets to know the truth,” I said, despondently.

We were sitting on the corner of the cliff, our legs hanging on the edge of the hill. The orange hues above in the sky seemed perfect with the gloomy clouds that matched my bad luck. It was the most beautiful place in our pack territory.

“Can’t we cancel your engagement, Klaus? We’ll find allies who will fight for us if Blood Moon Pack decides to destroy us,” Jenna spoke innocently, knowing the truth already. We couldn’t afford a war with any pack, we were the lowest in the rank.

“Let’s not talk about this. We know the ending already, I’ll have to compromise my whole life for this pack,” I said, not glancing at her. “Let’s get back to the villa.”

Standing up from the surface, my eyes lingered on the beautiful sunset in the sky which reminded me of my mate. I shook my head and tried to accept the reality. I couldn’t have her. I’ll have to let her go.

She deserves another mate who’ll cherish her, love her the best possible way and she won’t get hurt.

“You asshole. How can you let our mate be with someone else?” Todd, my wolf growled in the back of my mind who had shunned me since the morning. To be more precise, since I hurt our mate in the garden.

He was rebelling a lot but I didn’t listen to him. Instead, I put a barrier between us so he shunned me as a punishment.

“I love our mate, too, but I can’t let her hurt more in the future and whenever she’ll get to know about my engagement, she’ll get beyond hurt,” I tried to explain to my wolf. After all, he was a part of me, there was no benefit in fighting with him.

We both were right, he wasn’t ready to let our mate go and I wasn’t ready to let our mate get hurt.

Taking a last look at the sky, I took a step ahead to get to the villa but Jenna halted me by holding my wrist.

“Those people are waiting for you there. Especially your fiancee. She was asking about you and I made an excuse of finding you to come out,” she explained and shrugged which made sense.

“And you knew that I’ll be here, huh?”

“Of course, my brother. Who else will know if it’s not me,” she cockily said, sending a wink my way.

She didn’t know how grateful I was to have her in my life. Smiling, I hugged her and her familiar apple scent comforted me. We could find comfort only in our family members or our mates.

“Hey, Cuz. Look, who have I found in the woods?” Marcus’s overexcited voice startled me. He went to his grandparents’ house last week.

I turned to see him standing closer with my mate and for the first time, I wanted to break his face. My wolf was on the edge of coming out, I had to control my fury and wolf. Todd will only make things worse.

“When did you return?” I tried avoiding her, avoiding even looking at her beautiful face which was tougher than fighting a war. Though I could feel her intense gaze on me which demanded attention.

“I just came back and found this beauty struggling going back home so I was dropping her home but in the midway, I found you two here,” he asserted, hugging Jenna and me.

Why wasn’t I feeling happy since he was back?

He was my favorite cousin, my best buddy. We grew up together. We’re close.

All I could think about was punching him into the guts so he could stand away from my mate.

Scarlett was standing silent, listening to our conversation absentmindedly but staring at my lips. I looked at her finally and her lustful eyes gawked at my lips as if she wanted to kiss me, it felt like she wanted nothing but me.

“What the fu-k.” Marcus cried out and held her into his arms as she was losing her consciousness. She fainted and I ran to her, taking her in my arms.

I was her mate, not Marcus.

She couldn't go into heat, could she?
